Douglas In the past several decades, there have been numerous archaeological investigations conducted on the island of Barbados in the West Indies. However, no previous study has analyzed the composition of ceramics or resource extraction of clay. A question recently asked concerns the extent to which prehistoric peoples would have traveled for more preferable clays. It has been su^ested that clay for ceramics was taken from the very abundant deposits on the hillsides of Chalky Mount in the northeast part of the island. The following research is an interpretation of pottery samples from five different archaeological sites and clay from eight different source locations on Barbados. With the use of an inductivefy coupled argon plasma- emission spectrometer (ICAP-ES), 1 have analyzed a collection of 226 pottery sherds to determine source location during the Saladoid (200 B.C.- A.D. 650) and Suazoid (A.D. 1100-1600) periods. Because the extracts of ceramics made from a particular clay produce chemically identical solutions and contrasts with solutions made from different clays, the method can be reliably used for comparing and distinguishing ceramic sherds from their clay source. 1 have determined that prehistoric peoples were, to a great extent, using clays from near the settlement sites. This suggests that peoples on the south coast were not willing to travel to Chalky Mount to gather clay, and that peoples on the northern part of the island were more likely to travel to Chalky Mount, because of proximity. The use of clays closer to the settlements would have been an advantage in terms of the energy expended and the benefits received. The results of this research suggest that ceramic gathering and production had ties with the type of subsistence strategy practiced by peoples on Barbados as It changed through time. The consequences of a more sedentary Ufesfyle in the Suazoid period also probably led to a greater degree of craft specialization, thereby promoting an exchange network between sites. Principles derived from an evolutionary cultural approach show that there are environmental and sociotechnologlcal factors that Influenced resource procurement, subsistence strategies, and exchange on the Island. Mehrer, Director The purpose of this research is to examine the origin, manufacturing technique, function, and meaning of metals used during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries on the island of St. John, United States Virgin Islands. This project focuses on two metal artifacts recovered during National Park Service excavations conducted between 1998 and 2001 at a shoreline indigenous site located on Cinnamon Bay. These objects currently represent two of only three metal artifacts reported from the entire ancient Lesser Antilles. Chemical and physical analyses of the objects were completed with nondestructive techniques including binocular stereomicroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, and particle-induced X-ray emission spectrometry with assistance from laboratories located at Northern Illinois University, Beloit College, Hope College and The Field Museum. It results from surveys of thousands of Saladoid zoomorphic ceramics in some 15 institutional collections in the Lesser Antilles and the United States with the aim of tracking the geographic distribution of zoomorphs. Strong regional interests in certain zoomorphs are appreciable in the distribution of animal and bird images. Chief among these regional variances are those between the Lesser Antilles and mainland Saladoid ceramics of the Lower Orinoco. Regional differences are also discernable between different groups of islands within the Lesser Antilles.     Whiskers, Claws and Prehensile Tails: Land Mammal Imagery in Saladoid Ceramics Lawrence Waldron CUNY Graduate Center Abstract: While early Conquest era accounts mention the importance of certain animal species in the iconography of the Greater Antilles, many other species appearing in Pre-Columbian Caribbean sculpture and ceramics remain un-deciphered. Chief among these mysterious symbols are the terrestrial mammals. From their numerous appearances, especially on Saladoid and Barrancoid pottery, land mammals are obviously of great importance in the symbolic repertoire of the ancient Antilleans. While most of the myths and folktales linking these animals to the ritual life of the Amerindians are lost, some important clues to the iconographic value of land mammals can be found in the study of their habitat and behaviors, and from their roles in the mythology of related groups living today. Résumé: Alors que des récits datant de la première période de la conquête espagnole font état de l’importance de certaines espèces animales dans l’iconographie des Grandes Antilles, beaucoup d’autres espèces apparaissant dans des sculptures ou sur des céramiques caribéennes précolombiennes restent encore énigmatiques. This name became widely adopted following the first international convention for the study of the pre-Columbian cultures of the Lesser Antilles (now IACA) in 1961, and it quickly replaced the appellation “Arawak” to designate the first Antillean ceramic groups. The Saladoid series culture area includes the Orinoco River basin, parts of the north coast of South America, and the Lesser Antilles and Puerto Rico.

The following summer, a team of excavators and osteologists, including the author, returned to Nevis to excavate and analyze the remains with the intention to learn as much as possible about the remains and, through proxy, the people to whom they belonged. We felt that through our investigations of the life of this woman, whom we dubbed Taoüa, we would be able to extrapolate this information more broadly to the people living in the Caribbean during the Ostionoid period (circa 800-1150 Common Era, or CE). The research done on these remains is important since there is little known about migration patterns of the Caribbean people during the Ostionoid era, and there is much confusion about who was living where, and when, during this large swath of time.

    A PALEO-INDIAN STEMMED POINT FROM TRINIDAD, WESTiNDIES Peter O'B. Harris THE BICHE POINT This paper reports the context and technology of the Biche point, proposes a tentative 2-phase framework of paleo-environment, reviews data on Caribbean flaked stone points within a framework of 3 separate subregional traditions, and assigns a tentative lifeway and chronology to the Biche point. CONTEXT Fifteen year old Jameel Baksh was sweeping the family yard in Baptist Street, Biche, in February 1988. As he reached the southwest corner of the house, he noticed something small and sharp exposed in a shallow erosion channel formed by rainwater falling from the roof. He dug up à large stemmed chert point (Fig.1). He took it to school in a town some 20 km away, and showed it to his teacher. She asked her younger brother to show it to his teacher in the nearby college. He in turn passed it to the history master, who recognized it as a possible Amerindian artifact, and brought it another 30km to the Archaeology Centre at the University of the West Indies, where it is now on permanent display. Biche is a large village in east Trinidad, located near the western edge of the Nariva swamp (Fig.2). Here a series of silt-free rivers flow slowly east from the Central Range, but are hindered from reaching the sea by a coastal sand ridge, which stretches across the full 21 km width of the bay. The trapped waters form a large freshwater swamp, with stands of moriche palms, and a single exit.

  • The Saladoid Occupation of Wonotobo Falls, Western Surinam
    THE SALADOID OCCUPATION OF WONOTOBO FALLS, WESTERN SURINAM. Aad Boomert Archaeological investigations at a site near the Wonotobo Falls in the Corantijn (Corentyne) river of Western Surinam have shown that the earliest Tropical Forest Indians arrived in the Guianas about the time of Christ. The remains of two subsequent ceramic complexes have been found at the Wonotobo Falls site. The lower part of the strati­ graphy is characterized by the Early Wonotobo Complex which appears to be closely related to the Maritime Saladoid tradition of coastal Venezuela and the West Indies. Pottery of the strongly Barrancoid influenced Late Wonotobo Complex has been found on top of the Saladoid refuse. To date, Wonotobo is the earliest Maritime Saladoid habita­ tion site east of the Orinoco river mouth. This paper aims to descri­ be the Early Wonotobo pottery and to discuss its dating and cultural affiliation. THE SITE The Wonotobo Falls are situaded pa 250 km South-South-West of the Corantijn river mouth, at about 4°23' N. Lat and 57°50' W.Long. Ascending the river it represents the first complex of rapids which cannot be passed, even when using corials. If one wants to travel further South, dug-out and cargo have to be carried five kilometers overland to a spot above the falls where the river is navigable again (see Zonneveld 1969). The Wonotobo complex consists of four main rap­ ids, from East to West: the Dutchman Fall, the Blue Crane Fall, the Frenchman Fall, and the Englishman Fall. The name "Wonotobo" is of Amerindian (Cariban) origin. Schomburgk (1837) speaks of "mawari Wono- topo." According to Ahlbrinck (1929), "mawari" is derived from "kuma- wari", the name for a crane species.
