Skei 2006 Vår Abstract This thesis examines Philip Roth’s American trilogy – American Pastoral, I Married a Communist and The Human Stain – with emphasis on the narrator/author, long- standing Roth character Nathan Zuckerman. I argue that the most fruitful reading of the trilogy is one that constantly keeps in mind that significant portions of the plot are imagined – or “authored” – by this familiar character. Such a reading is aware of how the American trilogy both “rewrites” the previous Zuckerman fictions, and turns the stories of the three novels’ respective protagonists, Seymour “Swede” Levov, Ira Ringold and Coleman Silk, into useful fictions through which Zuckerman can explore how the myth of America corresponds to the realities of postwar history. The thesis is divided into five chapters. In Chapter 1, I summarize the plot in each novel and make my case for a Zuckerman-centred reading. In Chapter 2, I map out who Zuckerman is and describe the transformation he has gone through when we encounter him in the American trilogy. In Chapter 3, I analyze the narrative strategy in each novel, and discuss the implications of the way Zuckerman explicitly brings the narrative process to our attention. In Chapter 4, I analyze thematically the decline of postwar America we are presented with in the trilogy. And in Chapter 5, I discuss the trilogy’s view of the human condition – what Zuckerman has learned in the narrative process. 2 Acknowledgements I would like to thank Mariann and Kristian who have both read the penultimate draft of this thesis and made valuable suggestions for alterations. If only I could invent as presumptuously as real life!” Nathan Zuckerman, The Ghost Writer. 1.1: Introduction In his 1960 essay “Writing American Fiction”, Philip Roth wrote that “the American writer … has his hands full in trying to understand, describe, and then make credible much of American reality. It stupefies, it sickens, it infuriates, and finally it is even a kind of embarrassment to one’s own meager imagination.” (Reading 167) What he proposed as a “solution” to this problem was to disregard society and turn the self into the subject of American fiction. Because, he maintained, “the social world has ceased to be as suitable or as manageable a subject as it once may have been”. (172) In a broad sense, the “blueprint” presented in “Writing American Fiction” was the one Roth followed for his own fiction for three decades. However, towards the end of the 1990s, Roth seemed to face the challenge he shied away from in 1960, that of describing and making credible American reality: From 1997 to 2000, he published three novels – American Pastoral, I Married A Communist and The Human Stain – that together formed a loose trilogy1. In an interview with The New York Times, Roth said: “I think of it as a thematic trilogy, dealing with the historical moments in postwar American life that have had the greatest impact on my generation.” (“McGrath Interview”2) The moments he has in mind are the McCarthy era of the 1950s, the Vietnam War of the 1960s and 70s, and the impeachment of President Clinton in the late 1990s. Each novel tells the story of how the destiny of its protagonist is shaped and intertwined with these historical events. Furthermore, all three novels are narrated by Roth’s long-serving literary alter-ego, Nathan Zuckerman – one of the selves that has already served as a subject in several previous Roth novels. Hence the novels in the trilogy in a way merge both the 1 In 2005, the trilogy was also published in one volume as The American Trilogy in the Everyman’s Library series. 2 References without page numbers refer to articles from the Internet. challenge of the 1960 essay with its tentative solution: That of describing and making credible American reality, but through a specific subject, a subject that Roth had already investigated thoroughly and made his readers familiar with. 1.2: The Stories In the following I will give a brief outline of the story in each novel. However, the novels are not only narrated by Nathan Zuckerman, but to a large degree authored by him as well: In both American Pastoral and The Human Stain, he quickly starts to expand upon the “facts” and lets his imagination run free with the stories of Swede Levov and Coleman Silk. I will return to the distinction between “fact” and “fiction” and the process by they which are intertwined in Chapter 3. For now, “fact” and “fiction” are left blurred, and these are outlines of the stories as Nathan Zuckerman imagines them. American Pastoral In American Pastoral, Zuckerman – once a womanizing celebrity-writer, now a hermit in the New England mountains – encounters his childhood hero, Seymour “Swede” Levov. Back in Newark in the 1940s, the Swede had been “the household Apollo of the Weequahic Jews” (4) – the boy most likely to leave every trace of the Old World behind and blend effortlessly into Wasp America. And on the surface he does just that – at least for a while: The Swede becomes a successful businessman as owner of the Newark Maid glove factory he inherits from his father Lou. He marries (initially against his father’s wishes) Dawn, an Irish Catholic and former Miss New Jersey, and together they go to live in a centuries-old colonial stone house in rural Old Rimrock, New Jersey, surrounded by Mayflower descendants. Then Dawn gives birth to a girl, Meredith “Merry” Levov. They are in other words living an American pastoral idyll. Until the mid-1960s, that is, when Merry becomes a teenager, and is deeply shocked by seeing a Vietnamese Buddhist monk’s self-immolation on television. Then she grows into an anti-war radical, starts mingling with the more drastic segments of the antiwar movement in New York and eventually blows up the local post office (the closest thing she can find to a federal building) in order to “[b]ring the war home” to Old Rimrock. (112) Unfortunately she murders the local doctor in the process. She disappears and the Swede’s life, and all the pastoral illusions he had maintained about 6 it, starts

The objective of the paper is to discuss Philip Roth’s approach to the Jewish community in Newark, where he spent his childhood and where he chose to set several of his novels. Roth’s narrations referring to his hometown are written in the first person singular and often take the form of childhood memories. The persistent return to the -set tings of the Jewish quarter of Newark in the past seems an attempt at understanding the reality of a relatively closed community, yet far from isolation, which provided him with all the elements determining his complex sense of iden- tity. Despite the various grades of fictitiousness of the characters and settings, the narrating protagonist of a number of Roth’s novels is usually a Jewish schoolboy born and brought up in Newark. The paper includes short analyses of “Jewish memories” in three novels by Philip Roth: The Plot Against America, where the narrator is called Philip Roth but the circumstances are elements of pure political/historical fiction, American Pastoral, where the speaker is Nathan Zuckerman, Roth’s frequent alter ego, and Portnoy’s Complaint, narrated by the fictitious Alexander Portnoy. Being both American and Jewish has considerable implications, which include, for example, the characters’ sexuality. The image of the childhood and adolescence of Roth’s protagonists seems not only an obsessive theme to be found in so many of his texts, but also the core of the intellectual construct which may be recognized as his sense of identity.

Introduction I was introduced to Philip Roth and the compelling voice of his fiction during a series of lectures on the topic of Jewish-American authors by Prof. Dr. Versluys in 2006 at Ghent University. The Counterlife (1986) was one of the novels on the reading list, in which I encountered for the first time his famous protagonist, Nathan Zuckerman. Ever since I have read this novel, I have been intrigued by Roth‟s work. My introduction to Jewish-American writing has made a lasting impression through him, which is why the choice was an easy one to make when we were asked to select a topic for this master thesis. I will not be dealing with Philip Roth‟s whole oeuvre, since the man is such a prolific writer and his work is in title to a thorough discussion. I will write about the first and the last novel in his Zuckerman-series, namely The Ghost Writer (1979) and Exit Ghost (2007). Nathan Zuckerman can be seen as Roth‟s alter-ego, an American- Jewish writer with a sharp pen. Since I have, unfortunately, only had the opportunity to read four of the eight Zuckerman-novels, I want to make it absolutely clear that the two novels mentioned here will be the sole basis for my analysis of the story-line and the character named Nathan Zuckerman.

    The Neurotic Ritual: The Metafictional Discourse in Philip Roth’s The Counterlife Sara Martín Alegre Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona 1992, 2015 [email protected] I A young American novelist recently explained on a TV interview that after reading the list of influences critics had discovered in his text–none of which were familiar to him–he went straight to the nearest public library to borrow the books, for he regarded himself under the obligation of reading his alleged sources. This amusing reaction shows how modern literary critics have placed fiction writers under obligations that would not have been so easily acknowledged in the 19th century. The power of literary criticism was strengthened in the 20th century by the development of literary theory, which has imposed on fiction writers a much deeper artistic self- consciousness than mere book reviewing could ever hope to decree. Doubtless, with a deconstructionist by his side, Dickens would have written from a quite different stand- point; after all, his genial lack of artistic self-consciousness became his main literary asset and the vehicle that allowed him to write with such liberty. After Modernism and Freud the Victorian paradise of innocent writing has been lost for ever, for responsibility and self-justification are demanded now of writers who resist them by trying experimental ways towards creative freedom. According to leading literary theories like Roland Barthes’, since the 1960s a novelist may even find him or herself literally put out of existence once the text reaches the hands of the readers. This theoretical burden guided novelists towards new novelistic experiments in which the writers emerged now and then from behind the curtains to announce their own view of literature in a wry, ironic tone, furthest from the formalism of literary theory.

Autobiografia. Ficção. Uma reclamação constante de escritores é serem obrigados a responder às perguntas a respeito do que há de pessoal na construção de certos personagens. Num ensaio publicado no livro Como ficar sozinho, intitulado Sobre ficção autobiográfica, Jonathan Franzen (2012) menciona quatro questões que são permanentemente dispostas para escritores. A quarta é exatamente: “Sua ficção é autobiográfica?”. A pergunta é hostil, ele prossegue, porque implica uma série de pressupostos. Se o relato literário é a vida mal disfarçada, o material autobiográfico vai se encerrar em breve e nenhum livro bom virá na sequência, presume o autor da pergunta. Ou ainda, o que torna a vida do escritor mais curiosa do que a do presidente norte-americano? Em outras palavras, haveria muita arrogância do escritor em achar que a própria vida rende um relato interessante. O outro pressuposto é de que, se era para usar material verídico, por que disfarçar o livro de ficção? “Ouço todas essas outras perguntas dentro da pergunta, e já faz tempo que acho indecente a palavra ‘autobiográfico’”, conclui (FRANZEN, 2012, p.277, grifo do autor), de maneira corrosiva. Novelists, at these moments, have found it necessary to define what differentiates the novel from other media and what makes the novel a viable form of art and communication in the age of images. At the same time, writers have expanded the novel form by borrowing conventions from these newer media. I describe this process of differentiation and interaction between the novel and other media as a “media assemblage” and argue that our understanding of the development of the novel in the twentieth century is incomplete if we isolate literature from the other media forms that compete with and influence it. The concept of an assemblage describes a historical situation in which two or more autonomous fields interact and influence one another. On the one hand, an assemblage is composed of physical objects such as TV sets, film cameras, personal computers, and publishing companies, while, on the other hand, it contains enunciations about those objects such as claims about the artistic merit of television, beliefs about the typical audience of a Hollywood blockbuster, or academic discussions about canonicity.

He was a committed social realist with a Lionel- Trilling-like ethics of fiction and a grand, unrealized ambition to write about public life. Then, fifteen years into his career, he wrote Portnoy’s Complaint (1969), a rollicking extravaganza of scurrilous comic invention and exaggerated grievance. Revelling in wildness and transgression, he found a voice that galvanized his talent as nothing before had done. Yet he still seemed to feel bound by his old ethical commitments. This was not the artistic breakthrough he had been hoping for. My paper considers how Roth works at reconciling his deep-seated sense of moral responsibility as a writer with his inescapable talent for imaginative recklessness in three novels, each of which marks a turning point in the middle of his career, Portnoy , The Ghost Writer (1979), and The Counterlife (1986). I take this moral/aesthetic problem to be an important preoccupation of Roth’s and make that preoccupation the basis for readings of the novels. In doing so, I try to show that his ethics and aesthetics are much deeply entangled than is usually acknowledged.     1 Nemesis and the Persistence of Tragic Framing: Bucky Cantor as Job, Hebrew Prometheus, and Reverse Oedipus Nicholas Stangherlin ABSTRACT. This article analyzes the protagonist of Nemesis, Eugene “Bucky” Cantor, in order to delineate those elements that define him not only as a Promethean figure, but as a modern incarnation of both Job and Oedipus. The evocative power of these archetypes contributes to establishing the tragic framework of the novel and the heroic status of its protagonist, both of which resist the narrator’s attempt to deconstruct them in the final chapter. The Prometheus archetype is a recurrent presence in Philip Roth’s works and it is in the Nemeses tetralogy that the author further develops the syncretic use of topoi and symbols of Hebrew and Greek mythology and Attic tragedy that had only been hinted at in American Pastoral. If in the Zuckerman novels, particularly in Zuckerman Bound and The Anatomy Lesson, the figure of Prometheus is alluded to with a certain degree of irony, in the American trilogy it acquires a more epic grandeur and tragic gravitas.1 Moreover, in American Pastoral, Roth introduces Jobian themes, which he is able to integrate within the context of the Swede’s Promethean transgression of the boundaries of ethnicity and history. The objective of this article is to analyze the characteristics of the protagonist of Nemesis, Eugene “Bucky” Cantor, in order to define those elements that make him not only a Promethean figure, but a modern incarnation of the biblical Job. Moreover, I will discuss those traits that Bucky shares with the figure of Oedipus; it will be observed how the very co-existence within the protagonist of the intrinsically divergent features of Job, Prometheus and Oedipus contributes to heightening the tragedy of his fall.
