0708-092 © LexisNexis 2008 Alistair MacQueen 1944-2008

It is with great sadness that we note the passing of our old friend Alistair Macqueen on the 19th of September while on holiday in Portugal with his family. Alistair began in the booktrade with Foyles and then was involved in establishing the Parks bookshop chain (later sold to Blackwells) and in Financial Training Publications. In 1988 he was instrumental in the founding of Blackstone Press, which he ran until its sale to Oxford University Press in 2001. Subsequently Alistair became involved in the College of Law Publishing and several other activities relating to law publishing and bookselling. Alistair was always “out and about” meeting law teachers and commissioning books. He regularly called in at the shop to seek advice or get our reaction to a new book idea. He will be missed by everyone here. Our deepest sympathies go out to all who knew and worked with Alistair, as well as to his family.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2008 39 Douglas Hockin Pethick 1939 – 2008

It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Douglas Hockin Pethick on August 26th 2008. Douglas was a former Managing Director of Wildy and Sons and the Father of our overseas sales manager John Pethick. Douglas joined the company in 1966 carrying out general duties within the firm. He rose through the ranks and became a director of the company in the mid 70’s. His main activity within the company was the buying and selling of Law Reports and other multi volume sets which was a major part of the business at that time and a role largely continued by his son John to this very day. Douglas became Managing Director of Wildy and Sons in 1987 and remained in that position until he was forced to retire early due to ill health in 1994. Douglas will be greatly missed by all of his colleagues that knew him and our many customers throughout the world.

50 WILDY’S BOOK NEWS NIGERIAN BAR ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE IN ABUJA

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2008 51 The Nigerian Bar Association Conference Abuja, 25th – 29th August 2008

Wildy’s returned to Nigeria for the second time this year having previously attended the NBA Business Conference in March. Steven Ross, John Pethick and John Sinkins were there on behalf of the company. The August Conference was a far larger affair this time around as there were over 10,000 delegates in attendance. On both occasions we had been invited by Prince Adeyemi Adefulu, head of Odade publishers and Mafix Books and we are indebted to him and all his staff for their help and assistance during our stay.

The Conference was held at the National Conference Centre, but we were a little surprised to learn that all of the stands were to be outside in the open air. We also discovered that the stands were constructed from rough plywood and vaguely resembled giant rabbit hutches and that ours had not actually been built yet and wouldn’t be unless we paid the workman for this task immediately! To our huge relief when we arrived on the Monday morning, our stand had finally been built, but we were warned to be careful of the interior walls as the thin coat of white emulsion was still wet!

The problem with the stands being outside was twofold. The first being that we had to setup and pack up our books and displays every day, though we did manage to achieve this thanks to the friendly help and assistance of the staff from Mafix Books. They will- ingly loaded their van each evening and returned the next morning with our material. The second problem was that August is the rainy season in Nigeria (see the front cover) and boy did it rain! Each time the skies opened, we were forced to retreat backwards to take shelter against the conference building which thankfully, did have a protruding roof, but of course rain never seems to fall vertically! Fortunately armed with Wildy umbrellas, we stood like matadors fending off the raging torrent and nothing was damaged!

With so many delegates we were constantly busy, in fact by the third day we were seri- ously running low on stock! By the end of the week we had sold everything from our stand and had also sold many multi volume sets both new and second-hand from our stock lists that we had brought with us.

All in all this was probably our most successful international conference ever and we shall certainly be back again next year. Our hosts Odade Publishing and Mafix Books were always on hand to help with any unforeseen problems - nothing was too much trouble for them. They met us at the airport and drove us to and from the conference each day and treated us to several sumptuous dinners in the evenings. The kindness and courtesy extended to us throughout our stay was truly remarkable.

The only sad note to the entire trip was that John Pethick, our overseas sales manager received news on the Tuesday evening that his Father had passed away (see page 40). The genuine sympathy offered by all the Nigerian people who knew John was deeply touch- ing. Even the hotel staff and the duty manager for British Airways (Nigeria) rose to the occasion and had John on the first plane home the next morning. 52 WILDY’S BOOK NEWS SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2008 53 Great Jamaican Advocates by Raphael Codlin ISBN 9789768125842 hardback £45

Great Jamaican Advocates, like its precursor, Historical Foundations of Jamaican Law, brings new and exciting revelations to legal literature in Jamaica. Raphael Codlin examines the fascinating careers of five of the greatest advocates to have enriched the legal landscape of Jamaica:-

Winston Frankson Ian Ramsay Frank Phipps Angela Hudson-Phillips David Muirhead

As Codlin explains in his preface, he seeks here “to foster understanding and appre- ciation for the contributions that advocates make to the stabilization and civilized operation of society. Indeed, in today’s world... advocates ought no longer to con- fine themselves to performing their functions in court. Instead, they need to apply their knowledge and influence towards the greater good of mankind.”

The outstanding advocates honoured in this volume have met and surpassed this challenge.

FROM WIG AND PEN TO COMPUTER REFLECTIONS OF A LEGAL AUTHOR

By Eric Stockdale

ISBN: 9780854900220 Hardback 152pp £14.95

Eric Stockdale left school at 14 and went to work in wartime London. After two years in the post-war Army he was called to the Bar at the age of 21 and appointed a Circuit judge shortly after his 43rd. birthday. He took early retirement at 65 and then heard Criminal In- juries Compensation appeals for ten years. When he became a barrister in 1950 he was a young man with an unusual background, which included ‘a pathetic attempt’ (his words) to follow several relatives into journal- ism. After his failure to break into Fleet Street, Eric Stockdale decided to earn his living from chambers in the adjoining Temple. His ability to write led to the publication of many articles, followed by books on criminal justice and historical topics, culminating with two works inspired by the links of many leaders of the American Revolution with his own Inn of Court, the Middle Temple. As this book is about his experiences as a legal author, it also deals briefly with his life in the law and describes how he became interested in the different subjects about which he wrote. Sir Igor Judge, in his Foreword, comments: ‘This is a remarkable story by any standards,’ and adds, ‘much is written humorously.’ The reader, whether lawyer or layman, is likely to concur with that judgment.
