They prove that the development of the traditional dress and decorative and applied arts goes through the following historical stages: an everyday item – a museum piece – the style of life (fashion) – the object to be transformed into modern design. The article is mainly concerned with the recreation of artistic values in new historical environment which is also the reproduction of a certain ethnic and cultural identity in modern days. In this respect, the Kazakh national costume is analysed as a piece of traditional art that is implemented in modern culture due to specific stylistic, expressive and constructive methods. This methodology calls for thorough knowledge of the Kazakh history, the development of the national costume, its construction and colour palette, the study of ancient technologies and the introduction of new ones which can enrich projective and constructive methods as they inherit cultural and historical experience. As a result, the authors conclude that the Kazakh national costume is a system of spiritual, aesthetic and

The Great Silk Road played the role of a link between countries of different civilizations and socio-economic systems. This huge system of caravan routes has existed for more than one and a half thousand years. The Great Silk Road became a channel through which there was a constant exchange in the field of culture and art, knowledge and ideas, traditions and objects. It is known that not only the goods themselves, but also information about their production, were distributed along the Silk Road. The scientific article presents a philosophical and cultural analysis of the interrelationships of cultures on the Silk Road, which ran through the famous Kokzhar fair. Keywords: Silk Road, trade, architecture, culture, patriotism JEL codes: N75, O14, F53, P33 1. Introduction As a result of the functioning of the Great Silk Road, for the first time in history, there was a tendency for cultures to converge in the process of intensive and regular world economic relations. A gradual unification of cultural components took place along the entire route of the Great Silk Road. Many researchers note that in the trade cities of Asia even developed the general features of the planning of temples, although they belonged to their own denominations.

Altar of the East (2018) photograph on aludibond, 100 x 150 cm Artist: Almagul Menlibayeva Edition: Special Edition for MOMENTUM Tokamak depicts the KTM Tokamak, the experimental materials-testing thermonuclear fusion reactor that started operation at the National Nuclear Center in Kurchatov, Kazakhstan in June 2017. As well as being a celebration of the triumph of new technology, this work also evokes memories of the nuclear arms race during the Cold War, in particular Kurchatov’s central role in the Soviet-era nuclear weapons tests. It is seen here alongside post-independence Kazakhstan’s ambitious plans for the development of nuclear power. The image Altar of the East, depicts the Soviet-era control panel in Kurchatov for detonating nuclear weapons. The iconic ‘Button’ of Cold War dread is pictured in this triptych of images as a relic of a past era giving way to a future of science and technology where women play the central roles, as depicted in The Constructor, a photo-collage superimposing a woman’s face onto images of the construction of Kazakhstan’s new capital Astana. This tryptich was shown in 2018 in Bread & Roses: Four Generations of Kazakh Women Artists, an exhibition organized by MOMENTUM in partnership with the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan. This show comprises work in a wide-range of media by 20 artists created from 1945 to the present.

  • Reflections on the Contemporary Art of Kazakhstan
http://dx.doi.org/10.7592/FEJF2016.63.art BETWEEN THE EAST AND THE WEST: REFLECTIONS ON THE CONTEMPORARY ART OF KAZAKHSTAN Madina Sultanova, Natalia Mikhailova, Dinara Amanzholova Abstract: The paper analyses a self-cognitive experience performed by Kazakh contemporary art, led by globalisation tendencies, in search of its place in the world. Two decades of independence have become the basis for a new cultural space, where Kazakhstan sees itself both as the most western of Oriental coun- tries and the most oriental of Western ones. Current lifestyles in Kazakh society, as well as the chosen political and economic vectors, considerably affect artis- tic consciousness, defining boundaries between ethno-cultural identity and the mainstream, which dictates its own terms and conditions. The present study focuses on art. In our opinion, it is the most illustrative area of visual creativity, which, faster than any other, reacts to each change in social mentality. The world reflected in a picture of one artist could reflect the world of the whole nation. Now the most interesting and important questions for Kazakhstan’s citizens focus on this problem. These are the same questions that can be found in the title of an emblematic painting by Paul Gauguin: Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going? Keywords: contemporary art, identity, Kazakhstan, search, ways INTRODUCTION Culture is a fate... Lee Kuan Yew Modern Kazakhstan is a country that continues its transformation from multi- ethnic to mono-ethnic. This historical fact lays at the basis of many modern social processes. After the country became independent, the Kazakhs who not so long ago represented an ethnic minority became the biggest ethnic group in Kazakhstan.

Malik Floberovich MUKANOV, Baurzhan Nurbekuly BAYDILDA, Raushan Erkenovna BAZARBAEVA Monumentality and Symbolism in Bauyrzhan Doszhanov’s Tapestry Artworks Malik Floberovich MUKANOV, Baurzhan Nurbekuly BAYDILDA, Raushan Erkenovna BAZARBAEVA T.K. Zhurgenov Kazakh National Academy of Arts, Almaty, Kazakhstan; Abstract. This article examines the creative method of the young Kazakh tapestry artist Bauyrzhan Doszhanov. In mythological plots, religious motives, symbolic images, he reveals a rich ethnographic heritage of Turkic peoples, the ancient nomadic civilization of Eurasian steppes. The artist’s credo rests on two aesthetic-visual principles of monumentality and symbolism. Aesthetics of minimalism shapes the composition of tapestries, while monumentality scales the imagery andg raphics of artworks. Keywords: Kazakh contemporary art, modern Kazakh tapestry, nomadic Turkic mythology, traditional nomadic archetypes, monumentality of imagery, Bauyrzhan Doszhanov After attending the Second Russian Triennale of Modern Tapestry in the Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve in Moscow in autumn of 2014, the famous art critic Irina Dvorkina wrote: "The exhibition is vibrant, but I want to describe the most impressive one by Kazakh artists. Décor and laconic imagery offer an ideal solution for modern tapestry. Once again the artists prove that the serious content does not depend on size."1She admired Bauyrzhan Doszhanov’s tapestry “Keeper of the hearth” (2011, size 130 x 210 cm) that won a special jury triennial prize. Bauyrzhan Doszhanov is one of the most outstanding young Kazakh tapestry artists. He graduated from T. Zhurgenov Kazakh National Academy of Arts with Master’s degree in "Textile Art" and worked as an instructor at the Department of Decorative and Applied Art. In his artworks, Doszhanov “estranges” ordinary and familiar aspects of everyday life, creates intrigue and suspense in mythological themes, and disrupts the traditional proportions of the part and the whole.

ASSISTANT-DIRECTOR GENERAL FOR CULTURE OF UNESCO t has been one year since COVID-19 was I declared a pandemic. It catalysed a year marked by the escalation of a crisis of devastating proportions, impacting heritage and the creative industries, and exacerbating the vulnerabilities and inequalities of the sector at large. Since then, museums, cultural venues and World Heritage sites have been deeply affected by travel restrictions, lockdowns and physical distancing measures, which have impacted entire communities around the world. Artists and cultural workers are among those who have been – and continue to be – heavily affected by the restrictions and lockdowns. Many freelance workers, the lifeblood of many areas of culture, have been left without work from one day to the next. At the outset of the pandemic, UNESCO took decisive steps to combat the impact on the culture sector through strengthening global policy dialogue and promoting the continued access to culture.
