Previous meetings • This is Kairat's first UEFA encounter with Cypriot opponents. Omonoia's one previous pairing with a team from Kazakhstan was a 2003/04 UEFA Champions League first qualifying round tie with Irtysh Pavlodar that they won thanks to a 2-1 away win following a goalless first leg in Nicosia. Form guide Kairat • Champions of Kazakhstan in 2020 for the first time in 16 years, Kairat are appearing in UEFA competition for the eighth successive season. However, this is the club's first appearance in a group stage, their last six campaigns having all ended in the UEFA Europa League qualifying phase. • Conquerors of Maccabi Haifa – the team that ended their European hopes last season – in the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round (1-1 a, 2-0 h), Kairat then lost to Crvena zvezda (2-1 h, 0-5 a), meaning a switch to the UEFA Europa League, where they fell in extra time to Armenian champions Alashkert (0-0 h, 2-3 a). However, a comprehensive UEFA Europa Conference League play-off win over Fola Esch (4-1 a, 3-1 h) booked their place in the competition's group stage. • Kairat have lost just two of their 23 European home games (W16 D5), those defeats – by Crvena zvezda (0-2) in 2002/03 and Sigma Olomouc (1-2) in 2018/19 – the only matches in which they have conceded more than one goal. They are currently on a seven-match unbeaten home run (W5 D2). Omonoia • Omonoia are the reigning champions of Cyprus, winning their 21st league title last term, when they also returned to Europe after a three-season absence and competed in a group stage for the first time, finishing bottom of their UEFA Europa League section behind PSV Eindhoven, Granada and PAOK with four points. • Henning Berg's side lost their opening European tie this season, against Dinamo Zagreb in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League (0-2 a, 0-1 h), then experienced contrasting penalty shoot-out fortunes in successive UEFA Europa League qualifiers, beating Flora Tallinn on spot kicks (1-0 h, 1-2 a) but losing by the same method in their play-off against Antwerp (4-2 h, 0-2 a), which meant a further transfer to the UEFA Europa Conference League group stage. • Omonoia have lost their last five European away matches and are without a win in seven (D1 L6). Links and trivia • Kairat's Spanish forward José Kanté played in Cyprus with AEK Larnaca (2014–16), scoring five goals including one against Omonoia in a 1-1 draw on 25 April 2015. • Last season Kanté faced Omonoia again in UEFA Champions League qualifying with Legia Warszawa, coming on as a 61st-minute substitute as his side exited the competition with a 0-2 extra-time defeat in the Polish capital. • Kairat's Belarus international defender Denis Polyakov spent the second half of 2017/18 with Omonoia's local rivals APOEL, his club winning both derbies in the play-off round (2-0 a, 4-1 h) en route to their Cypriot title triumph. • Kurban Berdyev was appointed as Kairat head coach on 24 August. The 69-year-old has experienced three UEFA Champions League group campaigns – two in charge of Rubin Kazan (2009/10, 2010/11) and one with Rostov (2016/17). He also led Rubin to the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals in 2012/13. • Kairat are one of eight clubs making their debut appearance in a UEFA group stage this season; the others – one in each group – are Alashkert (Group A), Flora Tallinn (B), Bodø/Glimt (C), Randers (D), Union Berlin (E), Lincoln Red Imps (F) and Mura (G). 3 FC Kairat Almaty - Omonoia FC Thursday 16 September 2021 - 16.30CET (20.30 local time) Match press kit Almaty Ortalyk Stadion, Almaty Team facts FC Kairat Almaty Formed: 1954 Nickname: Sary-Karalar (Yellow-and-Blacks), Halyq Komandasy (The Nation's Team) UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • None Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) League titles: 3 (2020) Kazakhstan Cup: 9 (2018) Ten-year European record 2020/21: UEFA Europa League second qualifying round 2019/20: UEFA Europa League second qualifying round 2018/19: UEFA Europa League third qualifying round 2017/18: UEFA Europa League second qualifying round 2016/17: UEFA Europa League second qualifying round 2015/16: UEFA Europa League play-offs 2014/15: UEFA Europa League second qualifying round 2013/14: did not take part in UEFA competition 2012/13: did not take part in UEFA competition 2011/12: did not take part in UEFA competition Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 7-1: Kairat v Engordany 19/07/18, UEFA Europa League first qualifying round second leg 6-0: Kairat v Atlantas 29/06/17, UEFA Europa League first qualifying round first leg • Biggest away win 1-4: Fola Esch v Kairat 19/08/21, UEFA Europa Conference League play-off first leg 0-3: Engordany v Kairat 12/07/18, UEFA Europa League first qualifying round first leg • Heaviest home defeat 0-2: Kairat v Crvena zvezda 15/08/02, UEFA Cup qualifying round first leg • Heaviest away defeat 5-0: Crvena zvezda v Kairat 28/07/21, UEFA Champions League second qualifying round second leg UEFA Europa Conference League • Biggest home win 3-1: Kairat v Fola Esch 26/08/21, play-off second leg • Biggest away win 1-4: Fola Esch v Kairat (see above) • Heaviest home defeat N/A • Heaviest away defeat N/A AC Omonoia Formed: 1948 Nickname: The Greens, The Clover UEFA club competition honours • None 4 FC Kairat Almaty - Omonoia FC Thursday 16 September 2021 - 16.30CET (20.30 local time) Match press kit Almaty Ortalyk Stadion, Almaty Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) League title: 21 (2021) Cypriot Cup: 14 (2012) Ten-year European record 2020/21: UEFA Europa League group stage (having transferred from UEFA Champions League play-offs) 2019/20: did not take part in UEFA competition 2018/19: did not take part in UEFA competition 2017/18: did not take part in UEFA competition 2016/17: UEFA Europa League second qualifying round 2015/16: UEFA Europa League third qualifying round 2014/15: UEFA Europa League play-offs 2013/14: UEFA Europa League second qualifying round 2012/13: UEFA Europa League third qualifying round 2011/12: UEFA Europa League play-offs Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 6-1: Omonoia v Differdange 03/10/79, European Champion Clubs' Cup first round second leg 5-0: Omonoia v Rabat Ajax 02/10/85, European Champion Clubs' Cup first round second leg • Biggest away win 0-5: Rabat Ajax v Omonoia 18/09/85, European Champion Clubs' Cup first round first leg • Heaviest home defeat 0-4: Omonoia v Bayern München 26/10/72, European Champion Clubs' Cup second round second leg • Heaviest away defeat 10-0: Ajax v Omonoia 24/10/79, European Champion Clubs' Cup second round first leg UEFA Europa Conference League • Biggest home win N/A • Biggest away win N/A • Heaviest home defeat N/A • Heaviest away defeat N/A 5 FC Kairat Almaty - Omonoia FC Thursday 16 September 2021 - 16.30CET (20.30 local time) Match press kit Almaty Ortalyk Stadion, Almaty Squad list FC Kairat Almaty Current season All-time QUAL UECL League UECL UEFA No. Player Nat.
