EnroutetoGethsemane: “ButafterIamrisenagain,Iwillgobeforeyouinto” (Matt.26:32). III. How did the foes and friends of Jesus Christ respond to His resurrection?

A. The response of His foes:

1. TheJewishleadersdemandedthatPilatesealJesus’tombtoprevent theresurrectionfromhappening. 4 “Nowthenextday,thatfollowedthedayofthepreparation,the chiefpriestsandPhariseescametogetheruntoPilate,Saying,Sir,we rememberthatthatdeceiversaid,whilehewasyetalive,Afterthree daysIwillriseagain.Commandthereforethatthesepulchrebe madesureuntilthethirdday,lesthisdisciplescomebynight,and stealhimaway,andsayuntothepeople,Heisrisenfromthedead: sothelasterrorshallbeworsethanthefirst.Pilatesaiduntothem, Yehaveawatch:goyourway,makeitassureasyecan.Sothey went,andmadethesepulchresure,sealingthestone,andsettinga watch” (Matt.27:6266). 2. The response of His friends: Sadly,noneofJesus’disciplesremembered(orhadsufficientfaithto believe)Hisrepeatedpromisetoriseagain. 1. Thewomendidnotremember. “Andwhenthesabbathwaspast,MaryMagdalene,andMarythe motherofJames,and,hadboughtsweetspices,thatthey mightcomeandanointhim.Andveryearlyinthemorningthefirst dayoftheweek,theycameuntothesepulchreattherisingofthe sun.Andtheysaidamongthemselves,Whoshallrollusawaythe stonefromthedoorofthesepulchre?” (Mark16:13). 2. PeterandJohndidnotremember. “Forasyettheyknewnotthescripture,thathemustriseagainfrom thedead”(John20:9). “ThenarosePeter,andranuntothesepulchre;andstoopingdown, hebeheldthelinenclotheslaidbythemselves,anddeparted, wonderinginhimselfatthatwhichwascometopass” (Luke24:12). 4. Theapostlesdidnotremember. “Andreturnedfromthesepulchre,andtoldallthesethingsuntothe eleven,andtoalltherest.ItwasMaryMagdaleneandJoanna,and 5 MarythemotherofJames,andotherwomenthatwerewiththem, whichtoldthesethingsuntotheapostles.Andtheirwordsseemedto themasidletales,andtheybelievedthemnot” (Luke24:911). 5. ThetwodisciplesontheRoaddidnotremember. “Thenhesaiduntothem,Ofools,andslowofhearttobelieveall thattheprophetshavespoken:OughtnotChristtohavesuffered thesethings,andtoenterintohisglory?” (Luke24:25,26). 6. IV. What is the evidence supporting the resurrection of Jesus Christ?

“Butwithoutfaithitisimpossibletopleasehim:forhethatcomethtoGodmust believethatheis,andthatheisarewarderofthemthatdiligentlyseekhim” (Heb.11:6). “ButsanctifytheLordGodinyourhearts:andbereadyalwaystogiveananswer toeverymanthataskethyouareasonofthehopethatisinyouwithmeekness andfear” (1Peter3:15).
