Thank you for choosing DePaul, and once again, welcome.

KEEP IN MIND

With a variety of events planned at this time of year, encourage your student to get involved, as national research shows students who are involved in activities outside of class do better academically. The Office of Student Involvement is a good resource for students. DePaul After Dark, a Thursday late-night social program, offers weekly events for students to have fun and meet one another.

Establishing a plan for communication with your student can help to alleviate homesickness. If your student is struggling to adjust to college life, you can refer them to University Counseling Services.

KEEP IN MIND

October presents the first round of midterms for your student, so words of encouragement or a care package might be a great way to show your support.

Winter quarter registration begins: encourage your student to visit their academic advisor to discuss classes for winter in advance of their registration date.

Roommate conflicts may emerge, as personality differences and living preferences present themselves. The Department of Residential Education can assist students living in the residence halls with navigating these issues. Above: The Fr. John J. KEEP IN MIND

Academic pressures may emerge as pre-finals stress sets in for your student. Encourage them to reach out to professors and advisors for support and assistance.

Your student is preparing to return home for winter break—this is a good time to discuss expectations of one another during the break.

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) has been open for a month, so now is a good time to complete this process. Because many sources of funds are limited, or are subject to deadlines, it is important to file your student’s FAFSA for the coming academic year as early as possible after October 1. Above: Just a short walk or an “L” stop away from the DePaul Lincoln Park Campus, the historic Armitage street area is home to many great restaurants and shops. KEEP IN MIND

Students are excited and anxious about the holiday season and winter break. Your student has had a quarter of independence, and their relationships with family and high school friends may have changed.

While your student will be happy to be home and reconnect with you and old friends, they will miss their DePaul friends.

With one quarter complete, your student may be ready to take on new challenges or may need to improve on the past. This is a good time to encourage reflection on the previous quarter and set goals for the new one. Refer to the “Learning Support” section of the calendar if your student is in need of specific tutoring support in their classes, or visit go. depaul.edu/success to learn about the many ways DePaul supports your student’s success.

Students who return home will have to readjust to life under their parents’ roof. Have a discussion with your student about your expectations.

Encourage your student to stay in touch with DePaul friends while they are home for the summer.
