This bibliography sets out to include everything published about Saint Vincent de Paul in English through the present day. One con tinues to be struck with the large quantity of these publications, beginning in 1664. Part I covers books, pamphlets, and theses; Part II contains periodical and encyclopedia articles and book reviews. This listing does not include non-print items, such as audio or video tapes, and slides. The Vincentian Studies Institute will gratefully re ceive and publish additions and corrections to this bibliography, and will publish periodic updates. The editor wishes to thank the many librarians and archivists who contributed to this publication. I. Books, Pamphlets in English Abelly, Louis. There are two Vincent de Pauls who have come down to us: the Vincent of legend and the Vincent of history. The Vincent of legend is the Saint of popular piety. This is the Vincent with two chief virtues: humility and charity, whose works are reduced to three: the foundlings, the galley-slaves, and the poor of Paris and the provinces. It is the St. Vincent of holy cards and statues; the St. Vincent of paintings and pictures who roamed the streets of Paris at night to gather into his arms the abandoned infants, bringing them back to his Daughters. In these paintings, there is usually snow on the ground and almost always in the background a church or church steeple to suggest the driving force of his charity. Statues most often portray St.

It has been accepted for inclusion in Maloney, Robert by an authorized administrator of Via Sapientiae. For more information, please contact [email protected]. Chapter II FIVE CHARACTERISTIC VIRTUES: YESTERDAY AND TODAY ... we should look on them as the five smooth stones with which, even at the first assault, we will defeat the infernal Goliath in the name of the Lord ofArmies ... CR XII, 12 I write this chapter with some hesitation, knowing that the task I am undertaking is a difficult, even if very important, one. For Vincent de Paul, simplicity, humility, meekness, mortification, and zeal were the charac- teristic virtues of a missionary. He saw them as "the five smooth stones by which we might conquer the evil Goliath ." These virtues are so central to St. Vincent's thinking that in efforts at renewal all those who share in the Vincentian tradition must grapple with their meaning and the forms they might take in the modem world. This chapter is divided into three parts: 1) a study of the five characteristic virtues as St. Vincent himself understood them; 2) a brief description of horizon-shifts that have taken place in theology and spirituality between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries; 3) an attempt at retrieving the five virtues in contemporary forms.

  • Archbishop John J. Williams
Record Group I.06.01 John Joseph Williams Papers, 1852-1907 Introduction & Index Archives, Archdiocese of Boston Introduction Biographical Sketch Scope and Content Content List (A-Z) Subject Index Introduction The John Joseph Williams papers held by the Archives of the Archdiocese of Boston span the years 1852-1907. The collection consists of original letters and documents from the year that Williams was assigned to what was to become St. Joseph’s parish in the West End of Boston until his death 55 years later. The papers number approximately 815 items and are contained in 282 folders arranged alphabetically by correspondent in five manuscript boxes. It is probable that the Williams papers were first put into some kind of order in the Archives in the 1930s when Fathers Robert h. Lord, John E. Sexton, and Edward T. Harrington were researching and writing their History of the Archdiocese of Boston, 1604-1943. At this time the original manuscripts held by the Archdiocese were placed individually in folders and arranged chronologically in file cabinets. One cabinet contained original material and another held typescripts, photostats, and other copies of documents held by other Archives that were gathered as part of the research effort. The outside of each folder noted the author and the recipient of the letter. In addition, several letters were sound in another section of the Archives. It is apparent that these letters were placed in the Archives after Lord, Sexton, and Harrington had completed their initial arrangement of manuscripts relating to the history of the Archdiocese of Boston. In preparing this collection of the original Williams material, a calendar was produced.

  • St. Vincent De Paul and the Homeless
WELCOMING THE STRANGER ST. VINCENT DE PAUL AND THE HOMELESS Robert Maloney, CM An earlier version of this article was published in Vincentiana 61, #2 (April-June 2017) 270-92. “There was no room for them in the inn.”1 Those stark words dampen the joy of Luke’s infancy narrative, which we read aloud every Christmas. No room for a young carpenter and his pregnant wife? Was it because they asked for help with a Galilean accent that identified them as strangers?2 Was there no room for the long-awaited child at whose birth angels proclaimed “good news of great joy that will be for all people”?3 No, there was no room. Their own people turned Mary and Joseph away. Their newborn child’s first bed was a feeding trough for animals. Matthew, in his infancy narrative, recounts another episode in the story of Jesus’ birth, where once again joy gives way to sorrow.4 He describes the death-threatening circumstances that drove Joseph and Mary from their homeland with Jesus. Reflecting on this account in Matthew’s gospel, Pius XII once stated, “The émigré Holy Family of Nazareth, fleeing into Egypt, is the archetype of every refugee family." 5 Quoting those words, Pope Francis has referred to the plight of the homeless and refugees again and again and has proclaimed their right to the “3 L’s”: land, labor and lodging.6 Today, in one way or another, 1.2 billion people share in the lot of Joseph, Mary and Jesus. Can the Vincentian Family have a significant impact on their lives? In this article, I propose to examine the theme in three steps: 1.

Cubed Circle Newsletter 241 – Consistency is Hard As many of probably noticed, we have been posting late and sporadically for the last month. This was, obviously, not our intention, but with the second semester eating into my free time, staying up to date is a tall order. Even without the newsletter itself seeing weekly publication the site has still remained up to date on a weekly basis, thanks primarily to co-author Ben Carass, as well as guest writers Paul Cooke and Leslie Lee III. But, the newsletter has survived for well over 241 weeks, and will hopefully thrive in the years to come. I have attempted to make provisions for publishing related tasks which should minimize the risk of major delays (obviously there will be some regular delays, as this late issue can attest), but we have some fail safes in place in order to keep this to a minimum. With all of this said, we have a great issue for everyone this week with Paul Cooke discussing the Pro-Wrestling Only Greatest Wrestler Ever project and his personal experience with the poll, Ben covers the news including tons of results from Japan and the Lesnar USADA violation, the Mixed Bag returns with a look at comedy wrestling, Ricochet/Ospreay, and a potential WWE match of the year -- plus Ben also looks at last Sunday's Battleground show and the first RAW of the brand split (a very good show). Also, for those unaware, we now have an official Twitter account @CubedCircleWres allowing the banger to unprecedented highs at @BenCarass and @RyanClingman.

On 25 January 1617, the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul, Saint Vincent de Paul preached a sermon in the village church of Folleville on the importance of a general confession in every person’s life. Later he chose this date to mark the beginning of what he called the Little Company. Four hundred three years have passed since that historical and God-inspired moment, when the first seeds were planted. Upon germination, these seeds grew, in 1625, into the Congregation of the Mission. One can just imagine the inner fire and missionary zeal of our first confreres who joined Vincent in the years that followed. We also can envision their life of prayer, willing detachment from material things, and thirst to follow Jesus, Evangelizer of the Poor, to the ends of the earth. On this Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul and the Foundation Day of our Congregation, I ask and encourage each member of the Little Company to mobilize others and ourselves in a prayer chain for the upcoming 43rd General Assembly of the Congregation of the Mission that will take place from 27 June – 15 July 2022. The prayer chain is to start this year on the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul and our Foundation Day and extend throughout the two and half years of preparation for the 43rd General Assembly of the Congregation of the Mission to its conclusion on 15 July 2022.

Although it has functioned in various capacities and under several different names, this committee's purpose has remained the same: to minister to the Catholic girls in Girl Scouts (at first) and Camp Fire (since 1973). Beginnings The relationship between Girl Scouting and Catholic youth ministry is the result of the foresight of Juliette Gordon Low. Soon after founding the Girl Scout movement in 1912, Low traveled to Baltimore to meet James Cardinal Gibbons and consult with him about her project. Five years later, Joseph Patrick Cardinal Hayes of New York appointed a representative to the Girl Scout National Board of Directors. The cardinal wanted to determine whether the Girl Scout program, which was so fine in theory, was equally sound in practice. Satisfied on this point, His Eminence publicly declared the program suitable for Catholic girls. In due course, the four U.S. Cardinals and the U.S. Catholic hierarchy followed suit. In the early 1920's, Girl Scout troops were formed in parochial schools and Catholic women eagerly became leaders in the program. When CYO was established in the early 1930's, Girl Scouting became its ally as a separate cooperative enterprise. In 1936, sociologist Father Edward Roberts Moore of Catholic charities, Archdiocese of New York, studied and approved the Girl Scout program because it was fitting for girls to beome "participating citizens in a modern, social democracy." This support further enhanced the relationship between the Catholic church and Girl Scouting.
