Mandarin Oriental, Milan Unveils New Speciality Suites: Tribute to Piero Fornasetti and Gio Ponti MANDARIN ORIENTAL, MILAN UNVEILS NEW SPECIALITY SUITES: TRIBUTE TO PIERO FORNASETTI AND GIO PONTI Hong Kong, 17 March 2016 – Mandarin Oriental, Milan is now offering guests two suites inspired by Milanese design masters, Piero Fornasetti and Gio Ponti. The new Milano Suite and Premier Suite complete the hotel, which opened in July 2015 and is characterised by eye-catching interiors that include the monochrome, geometrically designed Mandarin Bar, and stylish, Michelin-starred restaurant, Seta. Overlooking Seta restaurant’s courtyard and the picturesque Vicolo Giardino, the two new suites interiors balance Milanese elegance with functionality. Both are 100 square metres in size and each has a living room, bedroom, master bathroom and separate guest bathroom. Milano Suite Dedicated to Piero Fornasetti, the Milano Suite is furnished with original Fornasetti pieces. It is adorned with decoratively framed mirrors on the green walls of the lounge, where a Venetian trumeau and a ‘Riflesso’ wallpaper-covered central pillar hold the attention for that room. This pillar also acts as a divide between the ‘Ultime Notizie’ table and ‘Capitello’ chairs in the dining area, and the ‘Fly’ coffee table, the ‘Guscio’ sofa and a ‘Boss’ black leather armchair. Other features include a Spoon XL bath tub, a writing desk from the ‘Farfalle’ collection in the bedroom and an ‘Architettura’ console table in the corridor. Premier Suite A tribute to Milanese rationalism and the minimalist style of Gio Ponti, who has inspired many artists since the 1950s, the Premier Suite is decorated in black walnut. Its striking features include Mangiarotti’s ‘Eros’ marble table illuminated by an iconic ‘2097-30/50’’ Sarfatti chandelier. There is also an original console table by Gio Ponti and Citterio’s ‘Simpliciter’sofa. In terms of variety of decoration, Fornasetti’s production of objects and furniture is one of the largest of the 20th century. Fornasetti is celebrated as being among the most original creative talents of the twentieth century. During his career he created a visual vocabulary that is instantly recognizable and unceasingly engaging. Fornasetti designed a magical world, saturated in image and colour and filled with whimsy and wit. Biography • 1913 Piero Fornasetti is born in Milan, Italy. • 1930 Piero entered Brera Academy to study drawing. • 1932 Expelled from Brera for insubordination. • 1933 First artwork shown as part of a student exhibition at Milano University. Also this year, a series of scarves in printed silk was proposed to the Milan Triennale but was rejected. It was during this occasion that Piero’s work was noted by Gio Ponti. • 1935 At the sixth Triennale in Milan, Piero exhibited, among other things, a decorative bronze and ceramic frieze in an archaic style. • 1940 Piero met Gio Ponti and went on to design ‘The Lunar’ illustrated Calendar book for him. • 1942 Created frescoes for the Palazzo Bo in Padova. • 1943-1946 Went into exile in Switzerland. • 1947 Exhibited a series of motifs for ceramics at the Triennale (commissioned again by Gio Ponti).

Despite the word ‘design’ in the title, craft materials and techniques dominated the two thousand five hundred exhibits (see figure 1.1) and the five room sets designed by architects including Carlo Mollino and Gio Ponti. Enjoying critical and popular acclaim, Italy at Work spent the next three years travelling to eleven other museums across North America, closing at the Museum of the Rhode Island School of Design in November 1953.2 In May 1951, just as Italy at Work was embarking on the second leg of its tour, the ninth Triennale di Milano esposizione internazionale delle arti decorative e industriali moderne e dell’architettura moderna (Milan Triennial International Exposition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts and Modern Architecture) (see plate 2) opened in Milan, with the theme L’unità delle arti (The Unity of the Arts). The Italian architect and artist organisers attempted to project a unified image of post-war modernity, but this was clouded by internal conflicts that reflected wider political turmoil. While industrial design was present, craft remained the main- stay of Italy’s exhibits, and both were given multiple roles by competing visions for the nation’s post-war future.
