PRESS RELEASE MILANO DESIGN CITY 28 September - 10 October 2020 BISAZZA COLLEZIONE FORNASETTI A mosaic collection born from the collaboration with Fornasetti During MILANO DESIGN CITY, in the via Solferino 22 flagship store, BISAZZA will present COLLEZIONE FORNASETTI, a mosaic collection born from the interpretation of the creative language of Fornasetti, the Milanese Atelier internationally renowned for its unique decorative style. This meeting of the minds between two Italian design masters produced four mosaic patterns that, taken apart and reassembled, explore new surfaces, lavish proportions, and remarkable reflections of light. Thanks to the painstaking, faithful efforts of the Fornasetti and Bisazza ateliers, the unique Fornasetti touch is re- established and enhanced by the brilliance and transparency of the glass mosaic tiles and the exquisite blending of sixty shades of colour. The timeless works acquire powerful cultural significance by virtue of the like- minded identities of the two brands, both known for their artistic and artisan content-rich collections. For the first time in large format, the Ortensia, Bocca, Serratura and Soli a Capri patterns make a spectacular statement in any living space, transforming it into a rarefied, sophisticated setting with bold personality. The Bisazza mosaic decorations reproduce some of the most iconic Fornasetti images: the mouth, the hypnotic gaze seen through a keyhole, the enigmatic face of Piero Fornasetti’s muse, opera singer Lina Cavalieri who, in the Ortensia pattern, seems to peer meekly from an explosion of pink and blue petals. The sun is another star in this collection. In Soli a Capri, a compilation of brilliant suns whimsically portrays the face of Piero Fornasetti, lighting up a background in shades of blue or grey. -

Modernism 1 Modernism Modernism, in its broadest definition, is modern thought, character, or practice. More specifically, the term describes the modernist movement, its set of cultural tendencies and array of associated cultural movements, originally arising from wide-scale and far-reaching changes to Western society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Modernism was a revolt against the conservative values of realism.[2] [3] [4] Arguably the most paradigmatic motive of modernism is the rejection of tradition and its reprise, incorporation, rewriting, recapitulation, revision and parody in new forms.[5] [6] [7] Modernism rejected the lingering certainty of Enlightenment thinking and also rejected the existence of a compassionate, all-powerful Creator God.[8] [9] In general, the term modernism encompasses the activities and output of those who felt the "traditional" forms of art, architecture, literature, religious faith, social organization and daily life were becoming outdated in the new economic, social, and political conditions of an Hans Hofmann, "The Gate", 1959–1960, emerging fully industrialized world. The poet Ezra Pound's 1934 collection: Solomon R. Art Masterpiece: Pisa II, by Al Held Keywords: Abstract Expressionism, Kinetic Art/Op-Art, Geometric Grade(s): Activity: Optical-Art 3-D hand drawing About the Artist: Al Held, born in Brooklyn, New York, on October 12, 1928. He was a high-school drop-out who joined the Navy and discovered an interest in art. He later became a Professor at Yale University. Held touched on several styles of art from Abstract Expressionism to Op- Art, Illusionism, Minimalism, and Hard Edge. Abstract Expressionism is a style of artwork that is focused on expressing a feeling through the use of color and shape. Held developed his geometric form of abstraction by blending the randomly dripped painting style of Jackson Pollack with the meticulously ordered canvases of Piet Mondrian. Held used straight edges, masking tape and multiple coats of evenly applied paint to create works with intersecting lines, overlapping circles, triangles and other geometric figures. With subtle splashes of color and illusions of Chandler Unified School District Art Masterpiece Program, Chandler, Arizona, USA three-dimensional depth, the paintings could, in the words of one critic, be "disorienting to the point of vertigo." Busy until the end, Held could command more than $1million for his monumental works. He felt proprietary about his paintings along after completed. He would oversee a team of artists whenever his murals needed touching up. About the Artwork: Pisa II is a work that exemplifies the intersection of math and art. The painting was created during a time when abstract art was gaining prominence all over the world, particularly in America. -

PRESS RELEASE AL HELD Black and White Paintings 1967–1969 Opens Thursday February 18 from 6-8 pm Exhibition continues through March 26, 2016 Cheim & Read is pleased to present eight monumental black and white paintings, dating from 1967 to 1969, Al Held (1928–2005). An exhibition of Held’s “Alphabet Paintings,” made between 1961 and 1967, was exhibited at the gallery in 2013. This exhibition focuses on the unique series of paintings Held began in 1967, in which various geometric forms, arranged in multiple perspectives, are rendered within the strict confines of a black-and-white palette. Perhaps inspired by the India ink drawings of lines, circles, triangles, and squares that he made in 1966, Held had already begun moving away from the flat, boldly-colored shapes of his earlier work. Using charcoal and white acrylic directly on canvas, he started sketching multi-dimensional, interlocking configurations, surrounding them with colored ground. In late 1967, this B/W V 1967-68 acrylic on canvas experimentation yielded to an increasingly graphic, complex, and illusory 114 x 114 in 289.6 x 289.6 cm space. While compositions were still worked out on the canvas, often in several iterations, Held’s soft-edged charcoal was replaced by the sharply defined contours of uniformly painted forms, their thick black outlines positioned against a stark white field. The paintings featured in this exhibition encompass the initial phase of this new body of work. The “B/W series” is comprised of Held’s first fully realized canvases in his new style and limited palette, while works from the “Phoenicia” series are more explicit in their development of multiple perspectives and vanishing points, resulting in evermore ambiguous spatial relationships. -

Piero Fornasetti One Hundred Years on show from 9th May to 15th June 2014 Monday to Sunday 11.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. at 10 Corso Como Seoul 3F Piero Fornasetti Piero Fornasetti was a Milanese painter, sculptor, interior decorator, engraver of books and a creator of more than 13,000 products. In terms of variety of decoration, Fornasetti’s production of objects and furniture is one of the largest of the 20th century. Fornasetti is celebrated as being among the most original creative talents of the twentieth century. During his career he created a visual vocabulary that is instantly recognizable and unceasingly engaging. Fornasetti designed a magical world, saturated in image and colour and filled with whimsy and wit. Biography • 1913 Piero Fornasetti is born in Milan, Italy. • 1930 Piero entered Brera Academy to study drawing. • 1932 Expelled from Brera for insubordination. • 1933 First artwork shown as part of a student exhibition at Milano University. Also this year, a series of scarves in printed silk was proposed to the Milan Triennale but was rejected. It was during this occasion that Piero’s work was noted by Gio Ponti. • 1935 At the sixth Triennale in Milan, Piero exhibited, among other things, a decorative bronze and ceramic frieze in an archaic style. • 1940 Piero met Gio Ponti and went on to design ‘The Lunar’ illustrated Calendar book for him. • 1942 Created frescoes for the Palazzo Bo in Padova. • 1943-1946 Went into exile in Switzerland. • 1947 Exhibited a series of motifs for ceramics at the Triennale (commissioned again by Gio Ponti). -

Her Renaissance in Design Today embarked on its three-year tour of US museums, showing objects and environments designed in Italy’s post-war reconstruction by leading architects including Carlo Mollino and Gio Ponti. -

In addition to his signature push-broom sweep paintings, he was also an innovator in the field of shaped canvases and one of the original artists in the Brata Gallery during New York’s Tenth Street co-op gallery boom in the 1950s. His works are included in the permanent collections of more than a dozen museums and institutions, including The Art Institute of Chicago, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the California African American Museum in Los Angeles and the Centro de Arte Moderno in Guadalajara, Mexico. In anticipation of his upcoming retrospective at N’Namdi Contemporary Miami, we spoke with Clark about his life as an artist, the evolution of his style and techniques, and some of the experiences he’s had during his travels around the world.
