Recognition, Adaptation, Implementation

From gyms being closed completely in El Paso, to all on-line school instruction being used in many of Texas’ large urban districts, to face to face instruction from day one in countless other school districts; we’ve all made it to the start of the 2020-2021 school year! Recognizing what our individual situation entails is the first place to begin in getting our teams ready for the upcoming basketball season. One coach’s school instructional plan could be completely different from a neighboring school who competes in your district. Understand what’s expected of you from your superinten- dent, principal, and school administration. Adapting is what we do as coaches. Injuries, ineligibilities, pandemics; whatever obstacle we may encoun- ter we adapt our plan, our strategies, our focus. Our teams and players will continue to look to us coaches for guidance. They need our unwavering direction now more than ever. Implement your plan and move forward full steam ahead. Don’t dwell in hypotheticals. Carry out your plan in the here and now! Nothing is promised to us in the . What should we do if/when we get to a roadblock during this 2020-2021 school year? Begin anew by rec- ognizing the complexities of your circumstances, adapt your plan to the new reality, and implement your new plan to the best of your abilities.

Best of luck as you prepare for the greatest time of the school year, basketball season!

Best Swishes, Mike Carrabine, 2020-2021 TABC President

Mailing the cards in October allows TABC time to locate coaches who have changed schools over the summer and obtain their new mailing addresses. The 2020-21 cards are a completely new design and include the member’s name and a membership number on the front and important information including a QR code for our web site on the back. To be admitted to most high school games be prepared to show your card and a picture ID. For college games call ahead to be put on the pass gate list. If you scout a game as a staff, make sure each assistant brings their card as one card won't admit a group of coaches. The final decision on complimentary admittance rests with the host school or venue. We thank all schools who honor our membership card and allow our coaches to grow professionally and pre- pare their teams by scouting without having to pay to go to work. Let’s make sure we don't abuse that privilege. We are working with the athletic directors’ association to ensure that our card is accepted at as many venues as possible.

TABC works closely with the athletic coalition which includes the UIL and the “power five” THSCA, TGCA, THSADA (Athletic Directors) and THSBCA (Baseball). We are involved in every meeting and have a representative at each Legislative Council meeting. Addressed below are three of the issues that we hear the most about.

SHOT CLOCK The UIL allowed schools an opportunity to experiment with using a shot clock during invitational tournaments over the past two years if they would collect data from the event and pass that along to the UIL. So few schools participated that the shot clock was not considered for adoption at this time. It may be revisited after two years but for the time being it is a dead issue. In two years TABC will conduct an in depth statewide poll to see if enough interest exists for us to pursue the matter.

SPLIT CONFERENCES The concept of split conferences for determining state champions also did not receive enough support for it to be considered at this time by the UIL Legislative Council. The arguments that it would double the number of state cham- pions and “that football does it”, were outweighed by the fact that it would put an end to the state tournament as we know it. Di- minished crowds, non-centralized championship sites or stretching the event from Monday through Saturday, and inability for fans to attend the entire event were several of the reasons the majority opposed it. It too is a dead issue for the next two years.

FOUR TEAMS IN THE PLAYOFFS FOR CONFERENCE 1A This is an issue that has contin- ually gained support and TABC is working to help make it a reality. Conference 1A is the only clas- sification that still has only three teams from each district qualify for the state playoffs. Forcing the 2020-21 Calendar 2 district champion to sit idle for up to 10 days or try to find a meaningless “tune-up” game where players risk injury is one of the reasons for pushing for an even number of teams in the playoffs. Your TABC Board of Directors met in Austin on Saturday, September 12. TABC president Mike Carribine presided over the meeting with 23 board members and all three TABC directors present. The board reviewed the past year’s activities and approved next year’s budget. Two ad hoc committees were formed to investigate ways to increase TABC membership by providing more value to its members, and to look into ways to im- prove communication by incorporating newer technologies. TABC TABC in association with the Texas Athletic Directors Association is again offering complimentary membership to Texas Athletic Directors, Principals and Superinten- MEMBERSHIP dents. Many of these people are former coaches and friends of basketball. We welcome them and would like their input on how we can help their basketball programs. 2020-2021 If your administrators would like to join TABC, all we need is their e-mail address so they can receive our newsletter and a mailing address where we can send their member- ship card. Please share this information with administra- 1350 tors. We would like to say welcome to those who have already joined. We appreciate your support. SEPTEMBER 20, 2020

Please send us news and pictures of special events, player, coach or team accomplishments or just interesting basketball news from your community to [email protected].

TABC presents Milestone Awards to Texas coaches who reach their 300th varsity win and each multiple of 100 thereafter. If you reach one of those milestones during the season, please let TABC know immediately so that we can order your plaque. Plaques commemorating 300 and 400 wins can be picked up at the TABC clinic or it will be mailed to you. Plaques for 500 and subsequent milestones are presented during a halftime ceremony at the UIL state tournaments. We must send a list of all coaches who will participate in that ceremony by February 1, so please don’t wait until after your season is over to let us know about your achievement. Please e-mail your documenta- tion to [email protected] when you reach your 300th, 400th, 500th and subse- quent century marks. TABC Roundball Roundup—Page 6 Hoops for Hope - Texas Style TABC would like to encourage our members to send us any news on activities in which your teams participate involving raising funds in the fight against cancer and other diseases. We have called our coordinated effort Hoops for Hope – Texas Style in order to include the many causes for which you raise money. Many schools have hosted fundraisers to provide assis- tance for, or in honor of, local teachers, coaches, students or residents. Some have mirrored the NCAA Coaches vs. Cancer efforts where both opposing coaches wear basketball shoes during their game. Others have hosted “Pink Out” events which have raised funds for “The Cure.” Please send TABC news and pictures you have from your events during the season. They serve to give you and your team recognition for your efforts and also to give others ide- as on how they might be able to help as well. Keep up the good work and let us hear about it. Please send your news and pictures to [email protected]

Brooke Garner is a 16-year-old that lives in Austin with her parents and 3 dogs and is a Junior at Bowie High School. As a child she was very active and enjoyed activities such as piano, gui- tar, act-ing, basketball, wakeboarding, wake surfing, snow skiing, volleyball, track, and tennis. She loved to play with other kids and was even in the Spanish Club. Her quality of life was dis- rupted when at the age of 14, she was diagnosed with Juvenile Systemic Arthritis. As this is an invisible disease, there is no way to tell the pain that Brooke battles daily. Brooke explains “Every single day, I wake up with severe pain in my jaws, knees, hands, wrists, fingers, knees, ankles, and toes - with the jaw joints being the worst. It has caused me to miss over 25% of my Freshmen and Sophomore years in High School due to doctors’ visits or to just simply hurting too bad to concentrate. Last year, I was on the High School J.V. Basketball team, but missed over half the games because I was in so much pain.†Brooke does not want anyone to feel sorry for her. But she does want to spread awareness about the realities of Juvenile Arthritis and the daily challenges that it brings to over 25,000 children in Texas. While this disease has completely changed her life and impacted everything she does or wants to do, it has also brought her closer to her family which she is grateful for. She is an advocate for the Ar- thritis Foundation and is looking forward to helping bring meaningful change and an improved quality of life to other Ar- thritis Warriors. Brooke says, “While at this point in time, I can say that I am beating this disease, make no mistake about it, I am not giving up and will win this battle one day!” TABC Roundball Roundup—Page 7 TABC Presents the Class of 2021 Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame The induction banquet will take place May 15, 2021 at the San Antonio Airport Hilton.
