VALLE DEL ABDALAJÍS. The water supply problems in the inland vil- lage of Valle de Abdalajís are far from over. In fact only recently the town hall had to urge local residents to make “correct use” of drinking water due to the short- ages in some areas. There had been nighttime cuts in the supply, said the mayor José Romero, who said that the situa- tion could get worse. “We have a serious problem, there has always been the con- cern about whether we would get to the end of the day with enough water. This won’t get better until there’s a proper solution,” he added. The water supply problem in Valle del Abdalajís dates back to 2005 when the new high speed AVE railway line was being built close to the village. The works damaged the under- ground aquifers that supplied the local area, causing water supply problems. According to an agreement signed in 2007, Adif, the Spanish railway infrastructure company has been supplying the village with a daily delivery of water by road in tankers to compensate for the damage. However the agree- ment, meant to be a temporary solution, expired in October 2020 after 13 years. The railway company, part of the central government’s Trans- port Ministry, is still sending the tankers, however, after a lawsuit filed by the local council led the National Court to order the deliv- ery to continue until the case has been resolved. “This is a situation of uncer- tainty, as it’s just putting a patch over the problem to get from one day to the next,” said the mayor. He added that they had asked the court for an increase in the number of tankers delivering wa- ter during the summer due to pre- vent shortages. “We have more residents in the village at this time of year, as well as rural tourism. Unfortunately we are having serious supply problems in some neighbour- hoods,” he said last month. The town hall has started drill- ing work to search for more un- derground supplies. “We’re get- ting some more water, but they are not large wells and the water 16 NEWS August 6th to 12th 2021 SUR IN ENGLISH

Gangster. USA. Miguel cemetery Who was Alvin Karpis? What crimes did he commit, for his name to be associated forever with the word ‘gangster’? And, above all, how did he come to be in the San Miguel cemetery? Born Alvin Francis Karpowicz, the occupant of niche number 2,300 shortened his name to Al- vin Karpis and became one of the most-feared and pursued crimi- nals in the recent history of the United States. The son of Lithua- nian immigrants, he was born in Montreal, Canada, and grew up in Kansas, USA. His story is a real ex- ample of how the most deeply rooted criminal vocations start showing at an early age. When he was ten years old he was already smashing shop win- dows to steal goods, and before he was 20 he was sentenced to ten years at a reformatory. He escaped, and after a few months of adding to his police record he ended up in the state prison of Kansas, in Laising, in 1930. There, he met Fred Barker, with whom he would go on to form the Karpis-Barker gang, one of the most notorious criminal groups of the 1930s. “I was the best at robbing banks and kidnapping the wealthy... how many men have I killed? Well, I did try to count them once...” Those are just a couple of the comments made by Alvin ‘Creepy’ Karpis (the nickname came from his sinister smile) several decades later, when he had written his memoirs and was giving media in- terviews about those years of crime.
