The Dutch and the Iroquois - Beyond Historical Facts Written by Maarten Oversier The hidden meaning of 400 years of friendship The Dutch and the Iroquois - beyond historical facts When the Dutch and the Mohawks first met at the east coast of what is now the United States of America in 1613, they entered into an alliance of friendship for ‘as long as the grass grows green, the sky is blue and the rivers flow’. This year, exactly 400 years later, we commemorate their pact, the ‘Two Row Wampum Treaty’. Even at a governmental level this historical fact is acknowledged – as is the fact (to a lesser extent) that we fail to meet the commitments agreed upon in this timeless treaty. 1 However, what is passed over entirely is the deeper message that lies hidden in it. To what extent must the crisis deepen before we start seeing the enormous potential in this old friendship? Quite possibly it holds the key that may help redirect our present society, now caught up in turmoil. Western people associate their identity with political and economical systems that now seem to have become meaningless. Our spiritual development, as a consequence, is still in its infancy. Luckily, a growing number of people start recognizing the fact that indigenous peoples from all corners of the world, by keeping their traditions, culture, knowledge and manners of living alive, may well provide an update for our spiritual poverty. Centuries ago, these civilizations saw in their prophecies and traditions the dawning of our current crisis. What they saw as well, was the need for people in our day and age to revive, as one, the original values in life, society is built. It seems as though all ancient civilizations by joining forces in friendship. In so doing, we may learn possess one part of a giant jigsaw puzzle, a puzzle that to understand the fierce processes of change currently points out to us that earth can’t be ruled by mere causing worldwide disruptions on many levels, and how technology and ratio. The wampum belts, symbolic bead belts of Canadian and game board is the earthly stage; its human inhabitants are American Iroquoian people, contain keys as well. It’s the players. Now that players are sufficiently entangled in buying, selling, debt and wealth and have by now fully and implicitly internalized the rules of the game, no-one realizes anymore that in fact they have fallen victim to the inventors of the game. Everyone has become dependent on the bank and with that, the goal is achieved. The inventors of the game are happy as long as everyone takes part in their game, and slowly they shrewdly adjust the rules, sending the players ‘back to start’ on a regular basis, and keeping them imprisoned in the game. However, behind this game of Monopoly hides a whole different truth. And now is the time to discover it. Keys and key figures The clues handed to us by the ancient tribes are like keys to open spheres of experience making manifest the farce of the game. The so-called wisdom keepers, key figures in indigenous peoples, know this. For the purpose of the survival of mankind they were entrusted with the responsibility to guard over the original knowledge on life. Now that the world is under threat of reaching a deadlock by extreme quantities of rules (shrewdly replaced by laws), patents, restrictions and penalties, now that the Earth is exhausted and people are tired of the game, wisdom keepers present their knowledge. We All Belong: Indigenous Laws for Making and Maintaining Relations Against the Sovereignty of the State by Amar Bhatia A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Juridical Science Faculty of Law University of Toronto © Copyright by Amar Bhatia 2018 We All Belong: Indigenous Laws for Making and Maintaining Relations Against the Sovereignty of the State Amar Bhatia Doctor of Juridical Science Faculty of Law University of Toronto 2018 Abstract This dissertation proposes re-asserting Indigenous legal authority over immigration in the face of state sovereignty and ongoing colonialism. Chapter One examines the wider complex of Indigenous laws and legal traditions and their relationship to matters of “peopling” and making and maintaining relations with the land and those living on it. Chapter Two shows how the state came to displace the wealth of Indigenous legal relations described in Chapter One. I mainly focus here on the use of the historical treaties and the Indian Act to consolidate Canadian sovereignty at the direct expense of Indigenous laws and self- determination. Conventional notions of state sovereignty inevitably interrupt the revitalization of Indigenous modes of making and maintaining relations through treaties and adoption. Chapter Three brings the initial discussion about Indigenous laws and treaties together with my examination of Canadian sovereignty and its effect on Indigenous jurisdiction over peopling. I review the case of a Treaty One First Nation’s customary adoption of a precarious status migrant and the related attempt to prevent her removal from Canada on this basis. While this attempt was ii unsuccessful, I argue that an alternative approach to treaties informed by Indigenous laws would have recognized the staying power of Indigenous adoption.

  • The Great Peace) Or (The People of the Great Peace/Cosmic Kinship) —The Mohawk Nation and Haudenosaunee Confederacy—
Kayanerekowa (“K” is pronounced “G”) (The Great Peace) Or (The People of the Great Peace/Cosmic Kinship) —The Mohawk Nation and Haudenosaunee Confederacy— By Robert Vachon1 The Mohawk Nation is one of the six nations of the historically famous Iroquois Confederacy in North America. The Mohawks are presently a Nation of some 25 000 people living inside and outside of seven communities distributed in the upper states of New York and in the Provinces of Quebec and Ontario (Canada). While these people are customarily called “Mohawks” by outsiders, a name given to them by the Algonquian tribes/nations, in their own language the Mohawk call themselves Ganienghehaga, literally meaning “People of Ganiengheh” (the land of the Flint). The French, following Huron practices, used to call them “les Agniers”. The Six Nations Confederacy of which the Ganiengheh have always been a constituent member, is still called the Iroquois by outsiders; in their own languages however, the Iroquois call themselves the Haudenosaunee: “People of the Longhouse” or “People of the Great Peace” (or “Of the Cosmic Kinship” (Kayanerekowa). Besides signifying primarily the Great Harmony and the Peace Messenger’s message, Kayanerekowa —The Great Peace—also refers secondarily to two historical forms that it has taken in Iroquois and Mohawk history. I shall now describe briefly each of these four meanings. 1) The Great Harmony (or Cosmic Kinship) a) Introduction : I once asked the respected elder Sakokwenionkas (Tom Porter) of the Mohawk Nation: how would you translate in English the word Kayanerekowa. He thought briefly and said: “The closest I can find is simply: “The Great Nice” i.e.

Abstract This thesis investigates the role of settlers in maintaining settlement in Canada. I problematize settler bodies to deliberate on their potential for performing decolonization. My discussion seeks to complicate theoretical approaches that position the onto- epistemological stance of the settler as their impediment to decolonizing action. Drawing from the fields of phenomenology and affect theory, I discuss habit formation in bodies. I use case studies that discuss settler-Indigenous land relations to ground these theories of habit. I look to Indigenous leaders, artists and scholars, who offer valuable insights into the habituations of settlement as an institutionalized arrangement and a mode of behavior.

The Six Nations consist of the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca and Tuscarora. The Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) Confederacy were originally five independent nation states bound by a central constitution and a common set of laws. The five original nations unified under the Great Tree of Peace and became the Iroquois Confederacy long before the arrival of Europeans. In 1722, the Tuscarora joined the Confederacy to form the Six Nations. Historically, the homeland of the Iroquois was in modern–day New York State and Pennsylvania, between the Hudson River Valley to the east and the Susquehanna River to the west. Through military conquest, trade and diplomacy, the Iroquois extended control or influence over vast portions of northeaster North America; from the Atlantic seaboard in the east to the Mississippi Valley in the west, from the southern tip of James Bay, south along the St. Lawrence River Valley through eastern and southern Ontario into Michigan and south to the Carolinas. While the majority of the Iroquoian population remained in their traditional homelands, they established vast networks of military and trade alliances with other nations across these territories. Our Relationship with Settlers Two Row Wampum - Kaswentha “The treaty was made in 1613 between the Dutch and the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) as Dutch traders and settlers moved up the Hudson River into Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) territory. The Dutch initially proposed a patriarchal relationship with themselves as fathers and the Haudenosaunee people as children. According to Kanien’kehá:ka historian Ray Fadden, the Haudenosaunee rejected this notion and instead proposed: “We will not be like Father and Son, but like Brothers.

Sharing the River of Life: a report on the Two Row Wampum Renewal Campaign Enactment 1200 wds Liseli Haines with Buffy Curtis, Mohawk Valley Meeting I hadn’t used the inkle loom ever before. Now I threaded it with white and purple. White and purple the colors of the quahog shells, the colors of the beads made by Native Americans, the colors of the original wampum belt. Three lines of white: Peace, Friendship, Forever. Two lines of purple: One line the canoes of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois, as they were named by the French) carrying all their laws, customs, and beliefs. The second line the boats of the new people from across the seas, the Europeans, with their laws, customs, and beliefs. Both boats traveling down the river of life together into the future side by side; equals. The Two Row Wampum Belt was created to commemorate the first treaty between the Haudenosaunee and the Dutch in about 1613 as the Dutch sailed up the Hudson River, known to the Haudenosaunee as The River that Flows Both Ways (because the Hudson is a tidal river up to the falls in Troy). To hear the Haudenosaunee tell it, they saw the new people come and realized that they were not going away and held long discussions with their confederacy on how to live with their new neighbors. The Two Row Wampum Treaty was their plan. Each culture would be independent and equal, neither would be dominant. They would call each other brother. And the Haudenosaunee would teach the Europeans how to live in this new land with its animals, herbs, and plants that both depended on for life.
