Grade 7 Content Understandings, New York State Standards: Social Studies Standards This lesson covers European Exploration and Colonization of the Americas and Life in Colonial Communities, focusing on settlement patterns and political life in New Netherland. By studying the conflict between the Petrus Stuyvesant and the Brant van Slichtenhorst, students will consider the sources of historic documents and evaluate their reliability. Common Core Standards: Reading Standards By analyzing historic documents, students will develop essential reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. They will read and analyze informational texts and draw inferences from those texts. Students will explain what happened and why based on information from the readings. Additionally, as a class, students will discuss general academic and domain- specific words or phrases relevant to the unit. Speaking and Listening Standards Students will engage in group and teacher-led collaborative discussions, using textual evidence to pose hypotheses and respond to specific questions. They will also report to the class on their group’s assigned topic, explaining their ideas, analyses, and observations and citing reasons and evidence to support their claims. Chapter 9 Reading Myself and Worlds: Coping Strategies in the Face of Cumulative Trauma Danielle Schaub 1 Introduction When starting in the years during which the self takes shape, childhood trau- ma leaves its scars on the sites of formation in the child’s developmental trajec- tory. In my case, the continuous geographical and linguistic disruptions caused by my father’s peripatetic working life foregrounded language as a site of traumatisation and insecurity in early years. Such insecurity only signals one trauma this body experienced repeatedly. The various traumatic experiences that inform me include cumulative trauma resulting from parental symbiosis underplaying a child’s existence; unprepared-for displacement and translation of identity; abandonment in a convent at the age of three; untimely death of a parent believed healthy without post-factum psychological or emotional sup- port; death of an underage sibling. I thought I had managed to bounce back after the debilitating experiences, proving capable of resilience. To some ex- tent I had; otherwise I would not have functioned, but since the experiences haunted me with a nagging, unsettling feeling for years, I found myself pon- dering over my reactions, behaviours, responses to specific stressful situations. With time and much ink, as Boris Cyrulnik notes, I have come to terms with the past and perceive what once felt life threatening as less devastating.1 With creative pieces involving the textual and the visual in combination or on their own, the chapter illustrates and theorises the process undertaken to cope with traumas as well as the understanding of patterns adopted to disconnect from the traumatic sources. -

BGB 487 Van Rensselaer Bowier Manuscripts The complete title is, Van Rensselaer Bowier Manuscripts, Being the Letters of Kiliaen van Rensselaer, 1630-1643, and Other Documents Relating to the Colony of Rensselaerswyck. This work was translated and edited by Arnold J. F. van Laer. It was published in 1908 by the University of the State of New York, Albany. A brief description of the Van Rensselaer Bowier Manuscripts can be found on the New Netherland Institute's website. The link labeled, "Translation" will take you to a digital copy of the book in PDF format. It is over 900 pages and may take a few minutes to completely upload to your screen. Once it has, I have found that the best way to utilize the book is to download it to my computer and open it offline. Here is a direct link to the PDF: Van Rensselaer Bowier Manuscripts Digital copies in PDF and with options for other formats can be found elsewhere online, for example at the Internet Archives, and at Google Books. Since the book was published prior to 1927, it is in the public domain. For those who wish to have a physical book, used copies and reprints can be found for sale online at the websites of various booksellers. Just do a search. There is one person named Brouwer found in this volume, and a second person referred to as de Brouwer (the brewer), an appellation that should not be confused for a surname. Beginning at page 166 is a "Certificate of purchase from the Indians of land on the west side of the Hudson River from Smacks Island to Moenemin's Castle and of tract of land on the east side opposite Castle Island and Fort Orange." The date is given as August 13, 1630. -

“An Assessment of Immigration Federalism in the Nineteenth Century” Anna O. Law Herbert Kurz Associate Professor of Constitutional Law and Civil Liberties CUNY Brooklyn College [email protected] Abstract: In a federal system of government, why did the U.S. national government wait until 1882 to take over control of immigration policy from the states and localities? This phenomenon is especially curious since the control of entry/exit into and across a nation’s borders is so fundamental to the very definition of a state. Is it because the American state was too weak to do so, or specifically that the national government lacked administrative capacity to handle immigration until the late twentieth century? I argue that the delay of the national government taking over immigration was not due to a lack of administrative capacity. Instead, there were regionally specific reasons that the states preferred to retain control of migration policy. In the northern seaboard states, the priority was excluding the poor, sick, and criminal, who, if admitted, would pose social and economic burdens on those states. In the South, the motivation was preserving slavery and guarding against slave insurrections. The national government could not take over migration policy until a series of political events uncoupled slavery and migration policy in the South, and the federal government assumed financial responsibility for screening poor, sick, and criminal immigrants in the North. 1 ”There can be no concurrent power respecting such a subject-matter [policies regarding freedom of movement]. Retha Bowman 4/15/03, T1, S1 RB: …till I was at five. And then we came back to Union County and my mother taught at the old Ladd Canyon School. And this would be...shoot…seventy-some years ago ‘cause I’m eighty-four now. I: So you’ve been here since then? RB: I…oh, yeah. I’ve lived here all my life really, then, see, except for those. And my mother taught there and taught at Blue Mountain and Willow Dale and at different small schools around. And so we lived here and then…does that…I don’t know what that means. I don’t know what that says for ya. I: That’s fine. What schools did you go to? RB: I went to Ladd Canyon and then to Perry. My mother was…there were two…there are two buildings up there in Perry, or were, I don’t know, there were two school buildings, quite nice ones. And my mother was…taught the upper grades and was principal. And then another person taught…usually a woman…taught the first four grades like one, two, three, four in one building and Mom had five, six, seven, eight and was principal of both buildings. And so we lived at Perry for a while. And then we lived in La Grande a while and then I went… When I was seventeen I went out to teach in North Powder out there. So taught there three years and got married. I: Did… Do you remember anything about going to school in the little schools? RB: Oh, I was gonna say… Oh yeah, I remember about going…goin’ up there.
