In the year 2008, Olympic volunteers, as ambassadors of Beijing, will meet new friends from throughout the world. The Chinese people are eager for our guests to learn about our city and the people who live here. I. Brief Information of Beijing Beijing, abbreviated“ JING”, is the capital of the People’s Republic of China and the center of the nation's political, cultural and international exchanges. It is a famous city with a long history and splendid culture. Some 500,000 years ago, Peking Man, one of our forefathers, lived in the Zhoukoudian area of Beijing. The earliest name of Beijing 174 Manual for Beijing Olympic Volunteers found in historical records is“JI”. In the eleventh century the state of JI was subordinate to the XI ZHOU Dynasty. In the period of“ CHUN QIU” (about 770 B.C. to 477 B.C.), the state of YAN conquered JI, moving its capital to the city of JI. In the year 938 B.C., Beijing was the capital of the LIAO Dynasty (ruling the northern part of China at the time), and for more than 800 years, the city became the capital of the Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. The People’s Republic of China was established on October 1, 1949, and Beijing became the capital of this new nation. Beijing covers more than 16,000 square kilometers and has 16 subordinate districts (Dongcheng, Xicheng, Chongwen, Xuanwu, Chaoyang, Haidian, Fengtai, Shijingshan, Mentougou, Fangshan, Tongzhou, Shunyi, Daxing, Pinggu, Changping and Huairou) and 2 counties (Miyun and Yanqing).

  • Submitting an Individual Proposal
Volume 41(1) Winter/hiver 2015 Bilingual Facebook Users’ Cognitive Writing Processes Processus cognitifs d’écriture des utilisateurs bilingues de Facebook Jacqueline Riley, Texas A&M University at Commerce Abstract This study seeks to explore the cognitive processes involved as bilinguals wrote English and Spanish Facebook status updates. Three phases of data collection were employed: individual interviews, examination of participants’ Facebook status updates and a group interview. The findings suggested that regardless of the language in which participants wrote, they made a series of decisions as they selected the content, chose the language, formulated the text and typed the status updates. The findings also indicated that for the individuals in this study, higher language proficiencies resulted in increased automaticity when converting thoughts to nonstandard online communications. While participants engaged in some experiences found in Flower and Hayes’ Cognitive Process Model (1981) additional explanation was needed to illustrate how this process varied for online bilingual writers.

To date, little research on soil pollution in ChinaÕs urban parks has been conducted. To identify the concentrations and sources of heavy metals, and to assess the soil environmental qua- lity, samples were collected from 30 urban parks located in the city of Beijing. Subsequently, the concentrations of Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in the samples were analyzed. The investigation revealed that the accumulations of Cu and Pb were read- ily apparent in the soils. The integrated pollution index (IPI) of these four metals ranged from 0.97 to 9.21, with the highest IPI in the densely populated historic center district (HCD). Using multivariate statistic approaches (principal components analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis), two factors controlling the heavy metal variability were obtained, which accounted for nearly 80% of the total variance.

Shanmuga Sundaram 1 , U. S. Mahadeva Rao 2 and Nordin Simbak 2 1Department of Biochemistry, Prof. Dhanapalan College of Arts and Science, Chennai, India 2Faculty of Medicine and Health Science, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia _____________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT Preceding work in our laboratory has revealed that scopoletin, one of the main bioactive coumarin from fruits of Morinda citrifolia, exerts anti-diabetic activity in in vitro partly by averting α glucosidase and α amylase action. However, its aorto/vaso protective impact-based research is still incomprehensible. The present study looks into the regulatory efficacy of scopoletin on aortic lipid profile, radical scavenging status, endothelial factors and aortic morphology in dyslipidemic rats. Rats fed with normal diet serve as control [Group (G) 1], rats fed with cholesterol- enriched diet (CED) (4 % cholesterol and 1 % cholic acid) for 45 days (G2), rats fed with CED for 45 days + scopoletin (10 mg/kg, body weight/day orally) for the last 30 days (G3) and scopoletin alone rats (G4). Blood and aortic tissue were taken immediately and used for various biochemical, histological and molecular analyses. A pronounced increase in the levels of aortic lipid profile, lipid peroxidation along with substantial suppression in the activities of aortic antioxidant and endothelial factor was observed in G2.

The restaurant will feature Chifa favorites–the cuisine known throughout Peru, melding Chinese style and native ingredients–with his personal and creative take on Chinese classics and this South American style. José is no stranger to weaving cultures together in a dynamic dining experience, he is well known for his interpretation of Chinese and Mexican food, culture and traditions at his award-winning restaurant China Poblano at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. At this new location, José and his talented culinary team will create authentic, yet innovative dishes inspired by their research and development trips to Asia and most recently to Peru, that have helped them master the various skills and techniques of this rising world cuisine. Highlighting the rich flavors, bold colors, diverse textures and unique aromas, the menu will apply time-honored Chinese techniques to Peruvian ingredients. From the classic Peruvian causas or ceviches, to Asian favorites like dim sums and sumais, the dishes will showcase Peru’s multi- cultural influences and ingredients in true Jose fashion. “Peru is an astonishing country. The people and the culture reveal so many traditions. The history with China is fascinating and the Chifa cuisine so unique,” said José.
