Turtle shells with markings reminiscent of ancient Chinese writing from the Shang Dynasty have been carbon dated to as early as 1500 BC.[1] Chinese civilization originated with city-states in the Yellow River (Huang He) valley. 221 BC is commonly accepted to be the year in which China became unified under a large kingdom or empire. In that year, Qin Shi Huang first united China. Successive dynasties in Chinese history developed bureaucratic systems that enabled the Emperor of China to control increasingly larger territory that reached maximum under the Mongolian Yuan Dynasty and Manchurian Qing Dynasty. -

engendering heroism: ming-qing women’s song 1 ENGENDERING HEROISM: MING-QING WOMEN’S SONG LYRICS TO THE TUNE MAN JIANG HONG* by LI XIAORONG (McGill University) Abstract The heroic lyric had long been a masculine symbolic space linked with the male so- cial world of career and achievement. However, the participation of a critical mass of Ming-Qing women lyricists, whose gendered consciousness played a role in their tex- tual production, complicated the issue. This paper examines how women crossed gen- der boundaries to appropriate masculine poetics, particularly within the dimension of the heroic lyric to the tune Man jiang hong, to voice their reflections on larger historical circumstances as well as women’s gender roles in their society. The song lyric (ci 詞), along with shi 詩 poetry, was one of the dominant genres in which late imperial Chinese women writers were active.1 The two conceptual categories in the aesthetics and poetics of the song lyric—“masculine” (haofang 豪放) and “feminine” (wanyue 婉約)—may have primarily referred to the textual performance of male authors in the tradition. Hangzhou is approximately 400 airline miles (625 kilometers) southwest of Shanghai and is the largest urban area in Zhejiang (Slide 2). The province itself is named for the Zhe River (now called the Qiantang River), which runs through the southern part of the Hangzhou urban area. The historic core is located approximately 100 miles to the southwest of Shanghai. Most of the Hangzhou urban area is flat, but there are intermittent hills. CGEH Working Paper Series Urbanization in China, ca. 1100–1900 Yi Xu, Guangxi Normal University and Utrecht University Bas van Leeuwen, Utrecht University and IISH Jan Luiten van Zanden, Utrecht University January 2015 Working paper no. 63 www.cgeh.nl/working-paper-series/ Urbanization in China, ca. 1100–1900 Yi Xu, Guangxi Normal University and Utrecht University Bas van Leeuwen, Utrecht University and IISH Jan Luiten van Zanden, Utrecht University Abstract: This paper presents new estimates of the development of the urban population and the urbanization ratio for the period spanning the Song and late Qing dynasties. Urbanization is viewed, as in much of the economic historical literature on the topic, as an indirect indicator of economic development and structural change. The development of the urban system can therefore tell us a lot about long-term trends in the Chinese economy between 1100 and 1900. During the Song the level of urbanization was high, also by international standards – the capital cities of the Song were probably the largest cities in the world. This remained so until the late Ming, but during the Qing there was a downward trend in the level of urbanization from 11–12% to 7% in the late 18th century, a level at which it remained until the early 1900s. In our paper we analyse the role that socio–political and economic causes played in this decline, such as the changing character of the Chinese state, the limited impact of overseas trade on the urban system, and the apparent absence of the dynamic economic effects that were characteristic for the European urban system. -

Hangzhou is a city in China that has the largest domestic tourism base. Tourism professional primarily used a mass marketing approach for planning which was effective, but the city is exploring new methods to increase its international tourism. What is being proposed is the development of niche marketing based upon thematic planning. Mass marketing is from top to bottom and the proposed method is from bottom to top with the active involvement of tourism professionals. Both methods are necessary for the development a plan that has continuity. Key Words: strategic planning, thematic development, niche planning, international tourism, and planning continuity 1.0 Purpose The purpose of this study was to review the planning process used in Hangzhou, China. Hangzhou is an excellent case study because it has an urban and rural environment, excellent tourism perspective, and a progressive and aggressive tourism development philosophy. This is a case study to illustrate how niche marketing methods can be used as an input for the planning processes. -

Vol. 32.1: 113-60 jason protass A Geographic History of Song-Dynasty Chan Buddhism: The Decline of the Yunmen Lineage abstract: For a century during China’s Northern Song era, the Yunmen Chan lineage, one of several such regional networks, rose to dominance in the east and north and then abruptly disappeared. Whereas others suggested the decline was caused by a doctri- nal problem, this essay argues that the geopolitics of the Song–Jin wars were the pri- mary cause. The argument builds upon a dataset of Chan abbots gleaned from Flame Records. A chronological series of maps shows that Chan lineages were regionally based. Moreover, Song-era writers knew of regional differences among Chan lin- eages and suggested that regionalism was part of Chan identity: this corroborates my assertion. The essay turns to local gazetteers and early-Southern Song texts that re- cord the impacts of the Song–Jin wars on monasteries in regions associated with the Yunmen lineage.
