Stoic Week is an annual online event in which people from all over the world attempt to live like a Stoic for seven days. This is your opportunity to take part in a special experiment. You will be using this Handbook as your guide and following ancient Stoic Philosophy as an aid to living in the modern world. The Handbook was developed by Modern Stoicism, a multi-disciplinary team of academic philosophers, classicists, professional psychologists and cognitive therapists. The group was formed in 2012 to help others apply Stoic concepts and practices to the challenges of modern living. It includes several authors known for their writing and research on Stoicism. (You can find out more about us on the Modern Stoicism website.) For those of you interested, there is also a longer and more intensive version of Stoic Week called Stoic Mindfulness and Resilience Training (SMRT), designed by Donald Robertson, which lasts four weeks. Stoic Week has proven extremely popular – over 20,000 have participated since we started in 2012. Each year we receive a huge amount of online feedback from participants, which we use to revise and improve the Handbook. In this Handbook, you will find advice on how to adapt and follow Stoic principles. It combines general theory with more specific, step-by-step guidance on certain Stoic exercises. These materials have been prepared by experts in the field and give you an unusual and completely free-of-charge opportunity for personal development. The pandemic has posed many challenges but also opportunities to show our care for ourselves, others and our world. We believe that Stoicism provides a framework to rise to the occasion. Consequently, we made the decision to combine the material from 2019 with problems and examples relating to our current predicament. We hope in this way that Stoic Week 2020 will be relevant to the many people who are doing Stoic Week for the first time as well as those who have done it before. Probably, we all feel we should care properly for ourselves and for others; and increasingly today we feel we should also take more care of the wider natural environment in which we live. But how can we do these things in a coherent way that does not lead to conflict between these aims? And, how, in general, can we work towards giving our actions, relationships and lives more coherence and depth and a better focus? This Handbook is designed to help you to do this by outlining the Stoic framework for living. In the Introduction, we set out certain core Stoic ideas, including the idea that if we develop properly as human beings we learn to care thoughtfully for ourselves and others and to recognize that all human beings make up a wider community or family. Stoics also think that human beings form an integral part of nature, that nature as a whole has a providential care for all elements within it, and that we should play a constructive role within this natural whole. We also discuss the Stoic view of happiness, their belief that happiness depends on virtue, and that, as we get closer to virtue the quality of our emotional life changes, helping us to avoid negative emotions and to experience positive ones. Stoic week offers a step-by-step, day by day, opportunity for exploring these ideas and trying to put them into practice in your daily lives. We provide suggestive passages from the ancient Stoic writers as the basis for morning and evening meditations. The meditations and midday exercises give you a chance to think about key distinctive Stoic ideas and how they can be used to give more shape to your life, and to lead towards a life of happiness, whatever the difficulties and challenges that you confront day by day. Of course, this week can only be a start, both in learning about Stoic ideas and in putting them into practice. However, people have found it very helpful in previous years and we hope you do too. The Handbook also offers at the end suggestions about how to take this process forward after Stoic Week. 5 Frequently-Asked Questions Q: How do I know that living like a Stoic will benefit me? A: You can't know for certain until you try. Indeed, one of the reasons we're conducting the experiment is to find out whether, and how, Stoic practices can help us to live better lives. Having said that, in previous years, our participants have consistently reported benefits. For example, in 2017 our research findings showed that, on average, life satisfaction increased by 16%, flourishing by 10%, positive emotions by 11%, and negative emotions decreased by 14%. These figures are virtually identical to those reported by participants for the three preceding years, suggesting a consistent pattern of results. Data collected from the 2017 SMRT course showed that when we extended the exercises to four weeks, life satisfaction increased by 16%, positive emotions by 19%, flourishing by 15%, and negative emotions decreased by 20%. For the first time, in 2017, a follow-up was conducted three months after the course, which showed that improvement across these measures had been maintained to a considerable extent. Every year we have run Stoic Week participants have (on average) reported increases in well-being, however well-being is measured. Learning about Stoicism might help you in different ways. The benefit for you could be educational or philosophical, if it helps you to understand what Stoicism means. It may be psychological, helping you to become more emotionally resilient and possibly even happier. It may be moral, and you may find that the week helps you develop certain ethical qualities. Some people may, of course, find that Stoicism just isn't for them, which might in itself be a valuable discovery. However, from the questionnaire data we’ve collected and previous participants’ testimonies we can see that most people who participated in Stoic Week and related events found their experiences very enjoyable and beneficial. Q: What's the basic idea? A: You need to do the following: Follow the daily schedule, which consists of a passage for reflection and Stoic meditations for the morning and evening. At lunchtime, or another time more suitable for you, consider the Stoic exercise for that day. 6 We would also appreciate it if you would complete the online questionnaires. This will help us with our research and help you to assess your degree of Stoicism and how much the course has helped you. You should read each chapter in advance of the corresponding day. You might choose to read Monday's chapter, for example, first thing on Monday morning, or beforehand on Sunday evening. However, some people may find it easier just to read the whole handbook through before beginning Stoic Week and use the summary in each chapter as a daily reminder.

    Marcus Aurelius Roman Emperor and Philosopher Marcus Aurelius was a Roman Emperor from 161-180 A.D, at a time when to be a Roman Emperor really meant being an emperor of almost all of the known world, for Rome’s territory then was at its most expansive. Therefore his job was not a small one. And yet at the same time as ruling the empire, and campaigning against troublesome tribes in what is now central and middle Europe (do you remember him from the start of the Gilm Gladiator?), he was also a philosopher. This did not mean that he just sat around thinking lofty thoughts in his spare time. Rather, the philosophy he chose to study was aimed at helping the individual to live life better, that is with values and a focussed mind. Marcus never wanted any glory – his own writings tell us that the last thing he desired was to be ‘treated like a Caesar’. All he wanted was to perform his duty admirably to his own people, family and, indeed, to himself. It was his favourite philosophy as a way of life, Stoicism, which enabled him to do this. Stoicism was a philosophy practised across the Ancient World for around half a millennium since its foundation by Zeno in the 4th century B.C. Nowadays, of course, we still have the word ‘stoic’ in our own language. It tends to mean someone who ‘ just gets on with things’ and who is rather ‘inGlexible, rigid and even emotionless.’ But, as history obscures so many things from the past, this could not be further from the truth.

    Epictetus Slave and Philosopher Epictetus was born in modern-day Turkey in 55 A.D. He was born a slave (in fact, his name literally means the ‘one who is owned by another’) and lived in Rome, serving in a wealthy household to Epaphroditus who was the tyrannical Nero’s secretary. Not only was Epictetus a slave, but he was also a cripple. Life must have been difHicult and it was perhaps for this reason that he started to study philosophy and, like Marcus Aurelius, his preferred philosophy was Stoicism. It was in this philosophy that Epictetus found ‘freedom’. Not the kind of freedom one gets from being recognized as no longer being a slave, but the kind of ‘freedom’ which comes from have a purposeful and calm mind. As he studied more and more philosophy, he became the student of a leading Stoic teacher in Rome at that time, called Musonius Rufus. And, before long, Epictetus was teaching Stoicism himself, a fact which greatly annoyed the paranoid and deranged emperor Domitian who, in 93 A.D., banished all philosophers from Rome in case they ever discussed any ideas against his authoritarian rule. Epictetus decided to spend his exile in a town called Nicopolis which is in modern-day Albania, and he certainly kept active, founding his own philosophical school there. This was a place where anyone could come and seek advice about what was troubling him or her in life. Many of Epictetus’ teachings were written down, word for word, by one of his pupils and these are called the Discourses.

    Reason Papers Vol. 40, no. 1 Stoicism, Friendship, and Grief: A Response to Johnson Massimo Pigliucci City College of New York Brian Johnson, in his commentary on my effort to update Stoicism,1 provides a cogent critique of ancient Stoicism and a reasonable suggestion for my attempt to define modern Stoicism. I do not (much) disagree with him in terms of his conclusions, which he applies to the specific cases of friendship and grief, but which also hold for all of the Stoic “preferred indifferents.” I do, however, want to push back on two points: (1) the path he takes to arrive at those conclusions, and (2) the notion that all ancient Stoics would have proposed the same approach to friendship and grief that Epictetus takes. To begin with, Johnson points out that, for the Stoics, only virtue is good (agathos), while everything else is either worthy (axia) of choice or to be rejected.2 Hence the famous Stoic distinction between virtue, on the one hand, and preferred and dispreferred “indifferents” (i.e., everything else), on the other hand. However jarring the word “indifferent” may sound to modern ears, we need to be clear about what it means on the Stoic view. Things like wealth, health, education, friendship, love, and so forth are indifferents in the specific sense that they do not make us morally better or worse persons. The Stoic project is, fundamentally, one of moral self- improvement. This can be seen, for instance, in Epictetus: “What decides whether a sum of money is good? The money is not going to tell you; it must be the faculty that makes use of such impressions— reason” (Discourses I, 1.5).

Facts C was dismissed for refusing to apologise for offending his colleagues. C’s position was that he had mixed up his words due to his dyslexia. The offence that he had caused was unintentional. He had refused to apologise, or to apologise sufficiently, for that reason. He asserted that he was being required to communicate in a way that could not be misinterpreted, and that as a Stoic this was something that he could not do. C presented claims of direct disability discrimination and direct discrimination because of religion or belief. C’s case was that he had a strong interest in philosophy and a thorough knowledge of the principles of Stoicism. He told the Tribunal that he believes that there is an objective moral reality to which we are subject and that there are several ethical “values” (wisdom, courage, moderation and justice) to which he must adhere as a consequence of this belief. An important part of his belief is that he is not a “consequentialist”, i.e. the consequences of what he says and does do not prevent him from saying or doing that thing. His evidence, which was accepted by the Tribunal, was that he was striving towards what Stoics call “apatheia”, or a state of equanimity.

We have an idea of what doctors, nurses, teachers, among many of the other professions, do for the general public, but one may ask whether there is something substantial that philosophers and ethicists can offer in these circumstances. The thesis of this paper is that the stoic attitude towards times of trouble and the pragmatist way of finding out what is possible to elevate the Quality of living against all odds, if skilfully interwoven, could be an important tool in keeping mental health in good shape and, additionally, could contribute to the cultural scene at large. If this is the case, stoic pragmatists can indeed offer an interesting example of practical philosophy for many audiences, especially during the pandemic lockdown and, perhaps, for other serious difficulties or problems. To be effective in delivering their message, stoic pragmatists, as most with philosophers today, should enrich their textual and oral modes of traditional transmission of knowledge and become digital- culture public intellectuals that can recognize and reach more general audiences by, among other things, visual modes of digital communication. The motivation for this research is that there exists an apparent tension in Epictetus’ moral philosophy. According to Stoicism, knowledge is sufficient for virtue; however, many students of Stoicism have learnt that virtue is the only good, and endorsed this claim as true, and yet fail to act appropriately. Epictetus seems to resolve this problem through the introduction of applied exercises. That Epictetus requires his students to train themselves in this way seems in potential conflict with his moral psychology. In this dissertation, I resolve this tension through three contributions: (1) First, I develop an account of why Epictetus believes moral failure occurs in dedicated students of Stoicism who wish to achieve virtue. It occurs primarily because of two factors, precipitancy and weakness, which impede the progressing student of Stoicism from properly reflecting upon a situation. (2) Second, I argue for a novel explanation of the function of training in Epictetus. Epictetus tells us that training is necessary to ‘digest’ our theory. Building upon this neglected metaphor, I argue that the ‘digestion’ of theory is the process by which students move from weak commitments to general principles (i.e., virtue is the only good), which are vulnerable to instances of precipitancy or weakness, to specific actionable beliefs (i.e., I should not desire this bribe because is not an instance of virtue).

Over 600 participants completed a set of questionnaires both at the beginning and end of Stoic week, allowing us to assess the impact of doing Stoic Week on self-reports on well-being and on levels of Stoicism. For the first time we were using SABS 4.0, a longer and more comprehensive measure of a participant’s degree of Stoicism. Overall Findings In terms of improvements in well-being over Stoic Week, the results were similar to previous years, though slightly reduced on some measures. The completion rate was also broadly comparable with previous years.
