  • “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson
The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. I will illustrate the ways in which the process of signification functions within rock music to construct masculinities and within subcultures to negotiate authenticity. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank firstly my academic advisor Dr. William Echard for his continued patience with me during the thesis writing process and for his invaluable guidance. I also would like to send a big thank you to Dr. James Deaville, the head of Music and Culture program, who has given me much assistance along the way.

  • Effects Pedals and Pacific Northwest Heavy Rock Sound Jimi Hendrix
Effects Pedals and Pacific Northwest Heavy Rock Sound Jimi Hendrix had a tremendous impact with his "Experience" power trio, the bass and drums holding down a solid groove while the guitar goes crazy with feedback and noise. Jimi's main effects were fuzz (Fuzz Face) and wah (Vox). However, fuzz tone had fallen out of fashion in rock music by the 70s. Chris Newman got his first acoustic guitar at age 13 and his first electric at 14. He was also 14 when acquired his first effect pedal: a Fender Fuzz-Wah. This would have been 1967 or 68. He was inspired by Jimi Hendrix. At 17 Chris mowed lawns to save up money for an Electro-Harmonix LPB1 distortion pedal which he purchased from the classifieds in Rolling Stone (Issue #2). That was his introduction to Electro- Harmonix. In 1969, Electro-Harmonix developed the Big Muff π. Chris was using the Big Muff fuzz pedal by the early 1970s. Since the early 1970s, Big Muff Fuzz and Crybaby wah have been his main - and usually his only - effects. (Since 2018 he's begun experimenting with and incorporating other pedals, echoplex, etc.) In the 80s - especially the early 80s - Chris also used an Electro-Harmonix Small Clone chorus pedal. The chorus effect was invented in the late 70s. Chris bought a Small Clone in 1980 (likely about the time it first came out), incorporating it into his sound immediately. You can hear it, for example, on these albums: Trap Sampler (1981), Rock & Roll Hell (1983), and Pugsley (1985). There are also bootleg videos of Chris performing in Seattle songs that never made it onto an album, using these effects, for example, a 1981 performance of a song called "Into The Sky" https://youtu.be/kq-D8nteb5U What I find so interesting about this song "Into The Sky," other than the way the Nirvana song "Very Ape" seems to link it lyrically with certain journal entries of mine, is that Chris told me that people in Seattle didn't seem to like the song, which may be part of the reason he never put it on an album.

  • Mudhoney - Sub Pop, Sub Normal, Subversion!” Everett True, Melody Maker, March 11, 1989
! ! Handout 2 - Excerpts from “Mudhoney - Sub Pop, Sub Normal, Subversion!” Everett True, Melody Maker, March 11, 1989 In a bid to garner attention for the label’s artists, Sub Pop founders Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Ponemon invited British journalists to cover the growing Grunge scene in Seattle. Based on these overseas reviews, American record companies and music journalists soon began to take notice of Seattle bands as well. From Melody Maker: SUDDENLY SEATTLE IS THE CENTRE OF ALL THINGS GRUNGE. EVERETT TRUE TRAVELS TO THE HOME OF THE ANTI-HITS TO MEET MUDHONEY...WHO UNDERTAKE THEIR DEBUT UK TOUR NEXT WEEK. HIS MESSAGE? PREPARE TO BE BLASTED! BRITAIN IS currently held in thrall by a rock explosion emanating from one small, insignificant, West Coast American city. Seattle...now has a new claim to fame – the Sub Pop recording emporium, residing on the penthouse suite of First Avenue's Terminal Sales Building. As if from nowhere, hoards of...grungy gory guitar bands with one foot in the early Seventies and the other on punk rock's grave, are springing up. Names such as Tad, "the Meatloaf of the New Wave", and his spine-crushing band (who make the Swans seem positively half-hearted by comparison) and the incredible NIRVANA, barely alive, yet already one of the finest exponents anywhere in the art of marrying a simple, instinctive two-chord song to oceans of speakers. Sub Pop's own discovery, SOUNDGARDEN, are now up with the big boys, A&M, and then, of course, there's the magnificent MUDHONEY, who are shortly embarking on a tour over here with Sonic Youth.

  • The Scientists and Grunge: Influence and Globalised Flows
(This essay was first published in Jon Stratton Australian Rock: Essays on Popular Music, Network Books: Perth, 2007) The Scientists and Grunge: Influence and Globalised Flows The Scientists, or at least two of the band‘s three members, left Perth for Sydney in September, 1981. By this time Kim Salmon was already redefining the sound of the band. In Perth the first version of the Scientists, with James Baker who subsequently joined the Hoodoo Gurus on drums, had produced what, in retrospect, was the quintessential Perth punk album. Released in 1981, the Pink Album as it came to be known for its pink cover was composed of songs that had a powerful combination of English and American influences. Crudely, you could say the sound amalgamated the Sex Pistols and the New York Dolls. However, the band‘s over-riding influence was the conservative tunefulness of the English power-pop tradition that runs from the Troggs to the Buzzcocks and the Vibrators. The Scientists mrk I had already decided to break up when the Pink Album was recorded. Salmon subsequently formed the short-lived band Louie Louie with the drummer who would later provide the beats for the second version of the Scientists, Brett Rixon. It was during this time that Salmon began to evolve the sound that would characterize the second, and more well-known nationally and internationally, version of the Scientists. ‗Swampland‘, a song that will feature prominently in the historical narrative of this chapter, was written at this time with the third member of Louie Louie, Kim Williams.
