June 2020 Published Since 1968 52 Years of Only Good News Volume 52 No. 6 Thanks to wildflower patches, our golf course is buzzing By Bev Paulan Two years ago, On Top of the World Golf Course Superintendent Todd Six undertook a project to beautify the 18- hole golf course. His intention was to remove areas of “rough” and sow wildflower seeds. If the seeds germinated, and if the flowers grew and bloomed, he hoped that bees and but- terflies would take advantage of the nec- tar-rich blossoms. He got his wish ... and then some. Today, these wildflower patches play host to several species of native bees, wasps, flies and butterflies. And not only does the 18-hole course look great, Todd also started seeding on the 9-hole course this past year and it is equally as beautiful to the residents and inviting to the insects. You may have read somewhere about an impending insect apocalypse. Scientists are starting to sound the alarm about the decline of insects. These often overlooked, and more often unappreciated creatures, are called the foundation of all other life on earth. Especially hard are the native pol- linators. As natural landscapes give way to de- velopment, and far too many homeown- This is one of the wildflower patches at the On Top of the World 18-hole Golf Course. Back in mid-May, the board decided to attempt some type of outreach pro- gram, typical of Good Neighbors. It was unanimously agreed that we continue our aid to a local charity, Helping Hands, to whom we have dedicated some of our ef- forts this year. During a time when find- ing face masks was a difficult task, Sidney Colen Associate (SCA) employees took some time to sew their own. Getting creative in the photo at right are Sam, Kristina, Dani, Cary- lyn and Zorayda. Helping out during other shifts were Mark, Cindy, Oleg, Eddie, T.J., Bill and Georgia. The assembly line precision started with measuring materials and cutting patterns, to sewing everything just right. This crew made more than 100 face masks, which were distributed to help keep employees safe while they were working out in the field.
