Editorial

Does every cloud have a silver lining?

I do not know about that but I wonder if there may be. Perhaps it will take a virus that does not respect borders or ethnicity to teach us to be nicer to each other. Perhaps the world will learn to value more things and work together. It is only when you are ill that you really appreciate health.

I searched for a prayer for the coronavirus outbreak and found this:

Jesus Christ, you travelled through towns and villages “curing every disease and illness.” At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love. Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their strength and health. Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from working together and neighbours from helping one another. Heal us from our pride, which can make us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders.

The message of Easter is hope in the worst circumstances, and something new when everyone had given up. Have a healthy Easter.

The Easter Story: Jesus Has Risen - “Now I have told you”

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”

So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshipped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me. Matthew 28:1-10

The word “afraid” occurs three times in this short passage. We read that the temple guards, the women and the disciples were all afraid. What were they frightened of? They must have wondered if they had seen a ghost or worried they were seeing things. Perhaps they thought it was a trick to get into more trouble.

What do we think about it? The story is so familiar we can overlook the details. The events were stark and real. It was not a ghost or a trick. They were not seeing things. The main question is do we accept this and move on expectantly, not sure of what will happen next, but with faith or do we turn away? But we have been told.

The Friends of Buckinghamshire’s Historic Churches is holding its Annual Lecture on Tuesday 7th April 2020 in St Mary’s Church in Haddenham starting at 7:30pm – doors will open at 7:00pm. It will be given by Professor Robert Cumming (the well known art critic, art historian, author, TV presenter, and consultant who lives in north Bucks) and is entitled A Presidential visit to Buckinghamshire. In April 1786 John Adams and Thomas Jefferson (who became the second and third Presidents of the USA) made a week-long tour together of middle England. They travelled through Buckinghamshire on their way north and again on their way south. The talk explores why they came, what they saw, what they did, and speculates about what churches they might have visited.

The lecture is open to all at a cost of £8.00 per head; there will be a glass of wine or soft drink on arrival.

You can turn up and pay at the door or pre-book your tickets by sending an email to Nick Morgan on [email protected]

Gardening : April

Last year was a very difficult year for us gardeners, three very dry months to begin with, then later a very hot spell. Different this time so far, will have to hope that the very hot weather stays away. We could also hope for some warm April showers to really get things moving. We can only hope.

With growth fast taking off, make sure plants which require staking are properly staked and flower borders are weeded and fed.

Having finished flowering, daffodils will need “dead heading” and their leaves tided up. The longer the leaves can be left, better for the bulbs. Early flowering shrubs will need pruning and buddleia which flowers on new growth needs cutting right back.

Despite or in spite of the weather conditions, my heathers which have grown in the same spot for many years, have this year grown and flowered much, much better than ever before, and now they have finished flowering is the time to give the plants a trim using shears.

Onion sets can now be planted, and of course successional varieties of seeds sown in March. I know how popular runner beans have become but they are best left until May. Dwarf and climbing French beans can be planted towards the months end.

Do not forget to sow parsley seed on Good Friday. It is said to go to the Devil and back before it grows.

Easter Services

At the time of going to press The Church of England and other church and faith groups have announced they are putting public church services on hold until further notice to face the challenge of the Coronavirus crisis.

It is hoped some church buildings may, where practical, remain open as places of prayer for the community, observing social distancing recommendations.

The Church will be providing a range of resources to enable people to continue to walk with God at this difficult time. This includes #LiveLent daily reflections, prayer for the day audio and text and Alexa and Google Home smart speaker apps.

In the days and weeks ahead, the Church will be significantly expanding this output with audio of a simple daytime prayer and night prayer service, more video content and some live-streaming, new mental health reflections to support people, and webinars to help churches stream sermons, events and make the most of social media.

The Garden Tomb in Jerusalem All day long I have held out my hands to an obstinate people, who walk in ways not good, pursuing their own imaginations—Isaiah 65:2 (NIV)

Last year we visited Israel for the first time. One of the places we went to was the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem. Unlike some other places it was not too touristy and although it was full of parties of Christians from all around the world there was a genuine sense of peace and quiet. It is a strange mix of the holy and the bustle of the city. It is next door to a bus station which is situated at the foot of a rocky cliff face. “Face” is the right word as the cliff has a strange resemblance to a skull.

Jesus was crucified at a place named “the Skull” (Golgotha in Aramaic). In the mid-19th century, several Christian scholars suggested the rocky cliff marks the place of the Messiah’s crucifixion.

The Garden Tomb is a site of Christian worship and witness located in the heart of historic Jerusalem, just outside the Old City walls. The grounds of the garden were purchased in 1894 and is now run by a charity. Within this peaceful garden there is an ancient Jewish tomb which many believe is the site of Jesus of Nazareth’s burial and resurrection. Volunteers that come from around the globe and join a team of local Palestinians and Israelis.

In the gospels we read that “at the place where Jesus was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no-one had ever been laid” (John 19:41). Archaeological evidence, including an ancient winepress, suggests that this place was an agricultural garden in those days, and inside the garden an ancient Jewish tomb has been found, perhaps the empty tomb of Jesus. The most famous proponent of the view that Skull Hill is the biblical Golgotha was Major-General Charles Gordon who visited Jerusalem in 1883. Gordon also commented on the appropriateness of the location in a letter he sent to his sister on January 17, 1883, his second day in Jerusalem,

______Parish News 16 April 2020

Skull Hill as seen in 1901 from the northern walls of Jerusalem's Old City.

“I feel, for myself, convinced that the Hill near the Damascus Gate is Golgotha. ... From it, you can see the Temple, the Mount of Olives and the bulk of Jerusalem. His stretched out arms would, as it were, embrace it: "all day long have I stretched out my arms” [Isaiah 65:2]. Close to it is the slaughter-house of Jerusalem; quite pools of blood are lying there. It is covered with tombs of Muslim; there are many rock-hewn caves; and gardens surround it. Now, the place of execution in our Lord's time must have been, and continued to be, an unclean place ... so, to me, this hill is left bare ever since it was first used as a place of execution. ... It is very nice to see it so plain and simple, instead of having a huge church built on it. — Charles George Gordon, Letters of General C. G. Gordon to his Sister M. A. Gordon (London: Macmillan 1888), pp. 289-290

On the day of our visit the site was full of different groups from many countries having simple services. Visiting the garden tomb was moving in a way that our time in the Manger Square, the city and the Wailing Wall was not. Perhaps it was the sound of different languages, the peace or the familiar flowers which made it seem like a real garden had something to do with that.

Letter from Aston Sandford

Many of us will remember the traditional nursery rhyme –

Hot cross buns! Hot cross buns! One a penny, two a penny, Hot cross buns! If you have no daughters, Give them to your sons. One a penny, two a penny, Hot cross buns

- though I confess I had forgotten the last four lines. That is perhaps because there are different versions must be the case with lots of rhymes. The version given in my 1973 edition of the Oxford Book of Nursery Rhymes by Iona and Peter Opie contains the last four lines –

If your daughters do not like them Give them to your sons; But if you haven’t any of these pretty little elves You cannot do better than eat them yourselves.

According to the Opies, this was a former street cry which became what they describe as a calendar folk chant sung by children on Good Friday. They go on to describe something else I had forgotten – a game, played they say year round, in which hands are laid in a pile and the lowest removed and put on top while the song is chanted. As it happens the chant which I hear in my head is one of my earliest memories – the song Hob shoe hob which I heard on Listen with Mother on the radio. The Opies include this in their collection – apparently it was introduced in 1950 and was played daily with ‘a monotonous hammering tune’ and sadly there is no connection with the hot cross bun rhyme.

Nowadays hot cross buns can be available all year, which seems to me to be a shame, though there are of course theories that the buns preceded Christianity. Perhaps we should reinstate the law introduced by Queen Elizabeth I in 1592, whereby they could be sold only on Good Friday, at Christmas or for burials. This apparently was because they were believed to have medicinal qualities. That may be the reason why there is a tradition of keeping hot cross buns indefinitely.

Happy Easter.
