STEP 1 Review the timetable:

Review the timetable to see which workshops/date you would like to attend. Further information on each workshop can be found on page 10 onwards or alternatively you can click on the title of the workshop and this will take you to the information.

STEP 2 Book your workshops:

Follow the link provided on the timetable to book onto the workshop.

You will need to book onto each workshop individually.

The workshops are limited to 20 places (with the exception of Balint which is limited to 10). If the workshop is fully booked please select another workshop or date.

N.B please only book onto the workshop when you are 100% committed to attending as places are limited.

Once you have booked your workshops you will need to make payment. The costs are as follows:

Dr Graham Rutt

Graham was a GP for 32 years and trainer for 26 before he retired on health grounds in order to concentrate on being the Director of Postgraduate School of Primary Care Health Education England Northeast and North Cumbria, a position he has held for ten years now. He is also a visiting Professor at the University of Sunderland. His special interests lie in Recruitment and Selection of trainees, ensuring assessment procedures complement rather than replace teaching, and supporting trainees whose place of graduation is outside the UK. He is also an avid if rather slow cyclist, and writer of mediocre pantomimes… but most of you knew that anyway…

Dr Dominic Johnson

Clinical Sub Dean and Honorary Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist, Deputy Medical Director.

I started my career in dentistry graduating from Newcastle University with BDS (Hons.) in 1996 and then FDSRCS(Ed) in 1999. I graduated in medicine at Newcastle with Distinction in 2002. I did my higher training in Forensic Psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital. I worked as Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist in London for 18 months with an interest in personality disorder and psychodynamic risk assessment. I was appointed as a Clinical Senior Lecturer for NUMED Malaysia in June 2011 and then Dean of Clinical Affairs in October 2012. I returned to the UK in August 2014 and was appointed Clinical Sub Dean for Newcastle Universities Medical School in February 2015. I am undertaking a part time PhD looking at the experience of medical students resitting Final year, I chair and sit on Fitness to Practise Panels on behalf of the Medical School at Newcastle. I am the MBBS Course Lead for professionalism.

Dr Amit Gupta

Neonatal Consultant, Lead for International Medical Graduates (Oxford), Hon. Senior Lecturer (University of Oxford)

Title: Culture – does it impact performance?

Approximately 30% of the UK workforce is from overseas and integration into the culture of the NHS is neither simple nor quick. The talk explores the concept of culture and how this ‘software of the mind’ might impact performance. The author draws from current literature and his own experience as a overseas doctor to conceptually explore how our cultural DNA impacts on reflective learning, exam performance and career progression

Dr Amit Gupta did his postgraduate training in India before moving to the UK in 1999. He was appointed as a British Lung Foundation Research Fellow at UCL in 2007, where he spent two years researching the effects of preterm birth on lung growth and development. He was appointed as Consultant in Neonatal Medicine in Oxford in 2009 where he is part of a team providing tertiary medical and surgical care at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. He was the Program Director for Paediatric Trainees in Oxford for 3 years. He is a senior lecturer at Oxford University (Hon) and, till March 2018 was the Associate Postgraduate Dean in Oxford. He is currently the IMG lead for HETV Oxford.

He set up an international training fellowship along with the National Neonatology Forum of India, which has trained 65 international fellows in neonatal medicine, paediatric intensive care medicine and general paediatrics. His areas of interest include newborn ventilation and he is the director for the Oxford Advanced Ventilation Workshop having led several workshops in India and Sri Lanka. He led a team of UK specialists to help set up the Sri Lankan Neonatal Transport Project from 2012 onwards and is currently the Patron of the Neonatal Transport Forum of Sri Lanka. He led to the establishment of a formal system of neonatal transport in Sri Lanka and included teaching and training of over 750 nurses and doctors in this area. This project has recently won the BMJ South Asia Awards (2017) for innovation. His interests include the exploration of the impact of culture on performance.

Professor Namita Kumar

Consultant Physician and Rheumatologist

After qualifying as a doctor from Liverpool University, Namita moved to the North East of England after completing her house officer year. In the North East she completed her medical training, obtaining her post as a Consultant Rheumatologist and Physician in 2006, in which she continues. Involvement in Medical education started in 1997 with activities including RCP (London) Trainees' Committee, Education, training and standards Board and as a written examiner as part of the MRCP (UK) Standard Setting Group. In 2003 she was appointed as a board member of the Postgraduate Medical and Education Training Board by the Secretary of State for Health, and asked to complete two further terms. After merger of PMETB with the GMC in 2010, she was appointed as Foundation School director for Northern deanery. In 2013 she was appointed to the post of Postgraduate dean for Health Education North East. She was made an Honorary Clinical Professor by in 2014, and Newcastle University and University of Central Lancashire both in 2017.She has been a council member of the Academy of Medical Educators since 2014, and elected to Council of the Royal college of Physicians in 2017.

WORKSHOPS

Passing the MRCGP AKT – more than just revision? Iain Lawther

This workshop aims to give trainers a deeper understanding of the MRCGP AKT and why some knowledgeable GP Registrars can sometimes fail due to poor examination technique. Understanding the construction of the questions and adopting a more pragmatic approach can go a long way to helping achieve success.

As well as being an experienced GP Trainer, Iain is the Head of Continuing Practice in Health Education England North East and North Cumbria. He has keen interests in assessing and managing underperformance, GP retention, recruitment, appraisal and revalidation. Away from work, he is an advanced driving examiner and higher-level advanced driving instructor as well as a keen electronic music composer.

Mindfulness for Medics: Amanda McGough

• To learn how Mindfulness is delivered into health care and educational settings to address the rise in mental ill health in adults and young people • To explore the emerging evidence base for Mindfulness and the development of a new programme 'Mindfulness for Life' • To participate in some short practices to gain insight and experience of Mindfulness

The session is open to everyone and no prior experience is needed. Just come with an open mind and a willingness to try something new!

Amanda McGough is a Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) teacher. She is an associate member of the Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Mental Health Trust's Mindfulness team and delivered MBCT programmes to staff working across the Trust. Amanda organises and teaches MBCT programmes at The Garth Surgery in Guisborough, together with Dr Steve Williams (Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and retired GP) to staff and the public.

The Programme: The way Helen runs these workshops means the experience will be challenging and require the participant to embark on a process of personal growth and exploration. It has more of the characteristics of coaching and mentoring than of a ‘course’. It will cover a number of models from previous courses (an opportunity to refresh if you have done it before) and some new ones to help with working with tensions and different styles in the workplace.

Helen Frankenberg has worked full time with NECC since 2002 and is now the Director of NECC. She has delivered a number of leadership programmes to the public sector, she brings with her a number of assessment and organisational development tools – these include 360 Transformational Leadership (TLQ), action learning, medical leadership competency framework, Healthcare Leadership Model and investment in excellence (IIE). She has experience of their use with GP practices, boards, clinicians, elected members, directors and managers at all levels as well as similar materials for frontline staff and community representatives. She has delivered to both area time out events and to Practice time out events.

Her experience includes facilitation, problem solving, assertiveness, communication, motivation, emotional intelligence, team building, Belbin, MBTI, equality and diversity, performance management, strategic policy making, action planning and implementation. Prior to working as a consultant Helen has worked in local government, the voluntary sector and in health. Her qualifications include BSc Psychology, MCIPD (Member of Chartered Institute of Personnel) and ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) Level 5 Coaching.

The Art of Unlearning is Greatly Unappreciated: Paul Vincent

This title was suggest by a fellow delegate at an educators’ conference a few years ago. Can it really be true that before we learn anything at all we first have unlearn something else? How frustrating is that?! But this surely begs some questions: what is it that we need to unlearn and just how do we go about it? Is it even possible to forget some things? To answer these and other more or less related questions we shall take a gentle happy gamble through selected medical and maritime history.

Paul has been training since 1995, so has lived through “Pendleton” and “Setgo” and is now waiting with bated breath for the next educational breakthrough. Meanwhile, a masters in clinical education in 2015 considered how educational supervisors assess reflation in eportfolio. Through all this he is still a full time partner at Birtley Medical Group.

This swansong after a career on learning is about unlearning is a delicious irony, don’t you think?

This workshop will introduce participants to the variety of ways in which trainees can develop an academic research interest in GP training and beyond. We will discuss current initiatives that are looking to diversify this further and we will be keen to get the thoughts of participants about how we can support this development work better going forward

Eugene Tang is a First5 GP having completed his GP training in the Northumbria VTS where he was one of the Academic Clinical Fellows. He started his PhD in training and continues to do this part time. Alongside this he is also one of the region’s Engagement leads where he takes on the GP Champion role and the First5 representative for the local faculty.

Richard Price was a full time GP partner in Jesmond and a sessional GP in Prudhoe before giving up clinical practice 5 years ago. He is now Director of the Masters in Medical Education Programme at Newcastle University and NUMED Malaysia, and Associate Director in the School of Primary Care at HENE. He is also a licensed trainer for MBTI.

Time management & work life balance: Ben Burville

The workshop will look at effective time management with an emphasis on practical examples. It will also explore the issue of work/life balance and happiness.

Ben Burville is a full time (8 session) GP partner in the coastal town of Amble, Northumberland. A GP Trainer and Appraiser he worked in both business and for the military prior to medicine. Ben is married with 2 children aged 7 and 5 years old. Ben has a passion for diving & filming marine life and has worked with the BBC, ITV, Sky and others. He holds a Visiting Researcher post at Newcastle University in the Department of Marine Biology studying dolphins and seals.

With increasing cultural variation, understanding this essential part of interpersonal relationships is vital for all doctors. This half day workshop gives an essential overview of understanding cultural and ethnic variation, as well as the issues linked to equality and fairness for all.

Dr Graham Rutt is the Director of the Postgraduate School of Primary Care within HEE NE&C. He has a particular interest in the field of Equality and Diversity that arises out of his varied work in recruitment and selection and supporting doctors having difficulties with their exams…

Cross border conversations: Guy Robertshaw & Mike Smith

We all hopefully have a flavour of how things work on our own Training Programmes. But can we pick up good Practice from our other sister Programmes?

Ideally, we would aim to have “trios”: one Cumbrian Trainer, a Northumbrian Trainer and a Durham Tees Valley Trainer working together in the Workshop. Where numbers prevent this, we will adapt and work around this as best we can.

The Groups are notified by e-mail before the day, so that they can contact each other and decide what topics they would like to discuss. After a brief introduction the groups work together, sometimes enjoying a brisk walk along the banks of the Tees! We finish with a sharing of ‘hot topics’ as a large group.

Finally, you write up your discussion, describe how you’ve done regarding your Educational PDP from last year, and set a new PDP for the next coming year.

This “Cross Border Conversation” is then submitted to your Programme as your Trainer (Peer) Appraisal. Simples!

David Anderson has been a trainer for over 10 years and TPD for 5 years. He works and supports new trainers as well as trainee programme support (TPS) and ST1 teaching mainly. This includes a specialised course for IMGs trying to explain the complexities of the NHS!!

Guy Robertshaw, trainer for donkeys’ years, but now retired from face to face GP. He has been a TPD for 10 years. His main role is in Trainer Support and he does the bulk of the Trainer Appraisals too. He also teaches an ST1 group.

Developing a place to work that promotes resilience: Jane Chalmers

GP is very pressurised, and we are all resilient to be still working. This interactive workshop (no role play) will provide a space to look at how we can promote both organisational resilience and develop an environment to support resilience in our workforce.

Dr Jane Chalmers, Deputy Lead TPD, NGPTP Jane Chalmers is a portfolio GP working as a Locum GP, a GP Educator, a GP Appraiser and a life coach. She loves the mix of her roles. She is seeing more and more GPs and organisations who are finding it hard to manage and while she can’t make the job easier, she passionately believes we can develop our organisations to promote resilience and provide an environment that supports the workforce.

Supporting your trainees to pass the CSA- ‘Hints and tips from GPs who have been there’: Dr Jen Standen & Dr Suzanne Kay Worrall

As a GP registrar I was bombarded with ‘advice ‘on how best to pass the CSA. Whilst some of this was very helpful, other parts were sometimes misinformed, outdated or based on common misconceptions. This workshop aims to dispel some of the myths about the CSA and give you the ‘real inside story’. It will be jointly led by me and Dr Suzanne Kay-Worrall who has recently been a CSA examiner observer. Regardless of whether you are a CSA sitting veteran or not, this workshop should help provide you with many hints and tips that you can use to support your trainees in passing the CSA.

Dr Jen Standen MBBS BSc AICSM DRCOG MRCGP Jen Standen completed her GP training in June 2018 and is a partner at the Parkway Medical Centre in Coulby Newham. She was awarded the Ruth Dunlop Award, and jointly awarded the academic prize for the top combined CSA and AKT scores within the Durham Tees Valley training scheme.

Dr Suzanne Kay Worrall MBChB MRCGP Cert Diabetes Care Suzanne Kay-Worrall completed her GP training in 2008 and was awarded MRCGP with distinction. She currently works as a GP trainer at Bewick Crescent Surgery in Newton Aycliffe as well as a GP lecturer for Newcastle University. She has recently been awarded 2018 Trainer of the Year.

Dr Hugh Alberti is a GP partner and trainer in and is also head of GP teaching at Newcastle Medical School. He is passionate about General Practice being an ideal place for teaching of undergraduates and postgraduates and also has an interest in translating medical education research into practical helpful tips for busy GP teachers.

Richard Price was a full time GP partner in Jesmond and a sessional GP in Prudhoe before giving up clinical practice 5 years ago. Dr Carolyn Rigby has been a trainer since 2003 and a Programme Director since 2008. She is now job-sharing the Lead Training Programme Director role at Durham & Tees Valley GP Training Programme. She is also a partner at Parkway Medical Centre in Coulby Newham, Middlesbrough and was, until recently, a tutor on the Intending Trainers Course. Outside medicine, she is a trustee and the treasurer of Friends of Murambinda Hospital and enjoys trail running and orienteering.

Dr Mike Smith is a very experienced trainer and Training Programme Director at Durham & Tees. He is a partner at Bankhouse Surgery, Hartlepool, has been a trainer since 2007 and Training Programme Director at Durham and Tees Valley since 2008. Outside medicine, he likes to play guitar and has recently taken up the drums. A reason, perhaps, that his neighbours are moving house!

Dealing with error: Robin Douglas

I have experience in managing trainee and trainer concerns over the years. There are various models which can be applied, and I would like to look at a few but really draw from the experience of the group to identify common concerns and discuss a practical approach to managing some of the stresses of being a trainer.

Robin is a keen cycling GP and has been training in Newcastle for many years. He has worked up from being a TPD in Northumbria to an Associate Director in Quality for Primary Care in the NE and North Cumbria.

The workshop aims to look at early identification of struggling International Medical Graduates. The main focus will be on the possible causes of the struggle. This session will also help trainers by providing information on various support available to help such trainees. You will be able to hear the experiences of IMGs as GP trainee and Trainers. Rubi Vijayakumar is a graduate of the old Cleveland VTS and has been in General Practice in Teesside for 15 years. She has been a GP Trainer for 10 years with the Durham Tees Valley GP Training Programme. Rubi job shares the Lead Training Programme Director role and is the Operational Lead for Training Programme Support.

Dr Kamal Sidhu is a GP at Blackhall in Peterlee. He is an International Medical Graduate. He has been a GP Trainer for 10 years. He participates in the ARCP Panel in the role of Educational Supervisor whenever possible.

This workshop is based on the book 'Black Box Thinking' by Matthew Syed. It looks at the variety of ways our psychology deals, or doesn't deal, with failure, and looks at ways we can learn better from failure both individually and organisationally

Using Balint Groups to explore the doctor-patient and trainer-trainee relationship

We will give a brief overview of Balint before inviting participants to be in a Balint group. We will ask participants to have a 'case' in mind, either to do with a relationship with a patient or with a trainee. Balint work aims to provide a safe and creative environment in which to explore relationships and can be very useful both in a clinical context and in working with a trainee. The workshop is led by two accredited Balint leaders.

Make it stick: How do we learn? Hugh Alberti

Based on the latest evidence from educational psychology and cognitive science, come and hear how we and our trainees learn most effectively. There will be ample opportunity to discuss, chew over and argue with the findings, and how they may change our teaching practice.

Dr Hugh Alberti is a GP partner and trainer in Middlesbrough and is also head of GP teaching at Newcastle Medical School. He is passionate about General Practice being an ideal place for teaching of undergraduates and postgraduates and also has an interest in translating medical education research into practical helpful tips for busy GP teachers.

This workshop is for those who are already familiar with MBTI and have a pretty good idea of their type and would like to know more. (Please note therefore we will not be doing the questionnaire from scratch in the session, although there will be a brief recap of the model to remind you!). We will look particularly at MBTI and communication, conflict management and stress management.

In this session, Tim will give opportunities for discussion and make some suggestions about how educators might identify, diagnose and provide support for some of the challenges that are faced by many of our trainees when they move to our region.

Tim Sanders works as a GP on the retainer scheme in Appleby in Westmoreland. He has been a Training Programme Director for the North Cumbria GP Training Programme for the last 10 years (with a short gap when he worked as a GP Trainer) and also has roles as an appraiser, Section 12 approved GP, works for Cumbria Health on Call setting up their out of hours training programme and for the University of Central Lancashire as a Senior Lecturer in Rural Medicine. In his spare time he enjoys cycling, running, sailing and time with his wife and 3 children.

ARCP panels: Alison Bonavia

Do you want to find out more about ARCP panels? Could you be persuaded to become a panel member and really get to grips with ePortfolio, supervisor reports and all the mandatory evidence? If so, then this could be the workshop for you! We run about 18 ARCP panels per year and dates are set well in advance. Panel members generally sit on two panels per year depending on their availability. We hope to expand our numbers of educationalist panel members so if you are involved with training step on up!

Dr Alison Bonavia is a GP in Tees with a considerable interest in education. She is the Associate Director for assessment in HEE NE&NC and is therefore responsible for dealing with most of the queries about ARCP. She is also an external assessor for the RCGP so usually surrounded with spreadsheets of exam results and ARCP outcomes - oh and cake!

That led to him co-authoring Diagnosis and Treatment, a training manual for primary health care workers in developing countries. The last 10 years have seen him championing the plight of disadvantaged GP registrars in the disadvantaged area of Sunderland. The Struggling GP Registrar - Suggestions for Trainers: Iain Lawther

This workshop explores the complex factors that can be involved in underperformance amongst GP Registrars and how these interact. Using theory, experience and some simple common sense, the session will help Trainers to understand and detect these problems early and hopefully manage them effectively.

As well as being an experienced GP Trainer, Iain is the Head of Continuing Practice in Health Education England North East and North Cumbria. He has keen interests in assessing and managing underperformance, GP retention, recruitment, appraisal and revalidation. Away from work, he is an advanced driving examiner and higher-level advanced driving instructor as well as a keen electronic music composer.

Medical humanities: Shazia Akowuah

Care and support planning in the curriculum – what will it mean for trainers?: Rachel Cooper & Richard Croft

The RCGP expects to introduce care and support planning into the GP registrar curriculum from August 2019. This session aims to improve understanding of care and support planning and share early experiences about how this topic could be taught and assessed.

Rachel Cooper has been a GP partner at Holmside Medical Group since 2001 and a GP trainer since 2009. She also trains F2s in the practice. Rachel has previously worked at Newcastle CCG as Clinical Director for system resilience, incorporating long term conditions and older people. As part of this role she was involved in developing the Year of Care project in Newcastle. Holmside Medical Group was one of the first practices in the region to implement the Year of Care process for multimorbidity LTC conditions.

Richard Croft qualified in Glasgow in 1995, became a GP Partner at Cruddas Park Surgery in 1999 and a GP Trainer in 2008 and has been CCG Clinical Lead for Older People and the Newcastle Care Homes Project since 2012. Richard has led care and support planning at Cruddas Park since it was introduced in 2014, where it is now routine for the majority of patients with long term conditions.
