Soldier for a Day Annex A: SFAD Program Information SOLDIER FOR A DAY What is Soldier For A Day (SFAD)? The Soldier For A Day work-study program will show students and those interested in the Canadian Armed Forces Army Reserve how a soldier is trained and some of the things they do as part of the Canadian Armed Forces. Participants will be given the opportunity to see some of the equipment and vehicles used. They may also experience a portion of our annual fitness test and may receive basic instruction in marching and drill. Participants will also get a closer look at the different educational and job opportunities offered by each of the following local Army Reserve units: The Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary’s) – Infantry, Pipes and Drums Band; 5th (BC) Field Artillery Regiment, RCA, 156 Battery – Artillery and Band; 39 Service Battalion, 11 Service Company – Support (Cooks, drivers, mechanics, etc.); 39 Signal Regiment, B Squadron 2 Troop – Communications. Work-Study Program – Information for Students The Army Reserve in BC has been offering a work-study program in various forms since 1996. In that time, over 1100 students from various secondary schools in the Lower Mainland, on Vancouver Island, and in the Fraser Valley, have participated in this program. Many students come back to participate in the program a second time and it has become a favourite event for participating instructors and of course, career counsellors are welcome. The program is designed to be a fun way for students to gain work experience hours while learning more about the role of the Army Reserve both here in Canada and around the world. Space is limited, advance registration is encouraged and those who submit their application early stand a greater chance of participating in this event. What is the Army Reserve? The Army Reserve is made up of men and women who volunteer to serve part-time with the Canadian Armed Forces and learn valuable technical and leadership skills while also maintaining a regular civilian job or attending school full-time. There are over 1200 Reservists in BC and we are hiring. All uniforms, travel, and training are provided and you get paid when you work. We train from September until May (similar to the school year), generally 1 evening a week in your home town and 1 weekend a month. There are full-time military courses and training during the summer (usually off of Vancouver Island) up to 4 summers of consecutive full-time employment offered. While most Reservists work part-time, there are opportunities to work full-time both within Canada and overseas depending on the individuals training level and availability. What does the Army Reserve Do? The primary role of the Army Reserve is to support the Regular Force. Reservists have made substantial contributions to Canada's international and domestic operations. Since the year 2000, more than 4000 Reservists have been deployed with the Canadian Armed Forces on international operations with the United Nations, NATO, and others in places like: Europe; South-West Asia; Africa; the Middle East; and the Caribbean. Annex A 1/2 Annex A: SFAD Program Information Among the many ways that Reservists have contributed to domestic operations within Canada, they have: assisted with fighting forest fires in British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan; assisted with flood relief efforts in Alberta, Manitoba, and Quebec; assisted with hurricane relief efforts in Newfoundland and Labrador; participated in recovery efforts following ice storms in eastern Canada; and supported the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. What are the eligibility requirements to participate in the Soldier For A Day? To participate in the program, you need to be a minimum of 15 years of age and be interested in learning more about the Canadian Armed Forces Army Reserve. To apply for the Canadian Armed Forces Army Reserve, you must meet the following Eligibility Criteria, however, these criteria are not required to participate in the program: Be a Canadian Citizen; Be between the ages of 16-57 (if between 16-18 years old, you must have full-time student status and parental or legal guardian consent is required); Have minimum grade 10 with 6 core credits complete; and Have no legal obligations to the judicial system. When and where is the Soldier For A Day being held? Date: 24 February 2018 Time: 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM Location: 715 Bay Street, Victoria, BC V8T1R1 How do I register to participate? Individually register online early to attend as there are limited spaces at: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/soldier-for-a-day-victoria-registration-42131689016 What Should I bring with me? What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the Soldier for A Day? BC Transit is a good option. Many attendees are dropped off on Field Street at the beginning of the event, and picked up at the end. How can I contact someone if I have any other questions? IN SEARCH OF MINERVA’S OWL Canada‟s Army and Staff Education (1946-1995) by HOWARD GERARD COOMBS A thesis submitted to the Department of History in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen‟s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada January, 2010 Copyright © Howard Gerard Coombs, 2010 ABSTRACT The intellectual history of the Canadian Army from 1946 to 1995 can be traced through the curriculum utilized by the Canadian Army Staff College and the Canadian Forces College to educate the Canadian Army staff officer in conducting warfare within theatres of war. This body of knowledge was analogous to what today comprises the operational level of war. It is a structured vision of conducting conflict that was reaffirmed and sustained by institutional memory created in the crucible of the Second World War and traces its antecedents to the military operations of the Napoleonic Age. These ideas were preserved almost unchanged throughout the Cold War until the introduction of operational art in the late 1980s, as a result of United States influence. The ability of the Canadian Army to maintain this professional knowledge, as a coherent, unchanging whole throughout a period buffeted by social and political change indicates the separateness of the military profession within Canada. This arose from the absence of consistent and durable political guidance during the immediate post war era. As a result the use of the Canadian military as an instrument of national power became disjointed. By default, the unifying factor in Canadian defence activities was maintaining relevance within alliances, particularly in supporting the Pax Americana.

Chinese Canadian Military Museum Society The Chinese Canadian participation in the World Wars is largely unknown within and outside the Chinese communities yet their contribution was significant. However, despite their courage and patriotism, there are few official displays dedicated to Chinese Canadian participation in either war. As a result of their sacrifice in World War II, Chinese were finally able to claim the opportunities and rights afforded other Canadians. They were offered citizenship and the right to vote, which in turn, led to membership in professional societies such as law, medicine and engineering previously closed to them. The role of our museum society is to collect, record and preserve artifacts, memorabilia and photographs and tell their wartime stories. Today, we also seek to educate a new generation of Canadians on the role the Chinese played in our country’s history. We not only operate a museum – which is located within Chinese Cultural Centre complex in Vancouver’s Chinatown – we also organize tours and talks, and undertake special projects designed to promote awareness of the experience of Chinese Canadian soldiers. Find out more: [email protected]; on Facebook and on our website at www.ccmms.ca. Chinese Canadians veterans had served in various theatres of conflict – in Europe, Southeast Asia, South Pacific and Australia – and were present as provincial President Sidney Hamilton presented the charter to Unit 280 President the late Frank Ho Lem of Calgary.
