Introduction

Ready-made garments are mass-produced finished products of the industry. They are made from many different fabrics and yarns. Their characteristics depend on the fibers used in their manufacture. The garments are very simple to manufacture and easily marketable both in urban and rural areas. The demand of readymade garments is increasing day by day due to urbanization of the cities.

Readymade garments are a part of our daily life. Clothes are an epitome of a culture. People in different parts of the world have their own styles of dressing which symbolize their culture and status. The Readymade garments industry is increasing day by day due to changes of in day to day life. The textile industry including readymade garments occupies a unique position in the Indian economy. Its predominant presence in the Indian economy is manifested in terms of its significant contribution to the industrial production, employment generation and foreign exchange earnings.

The readymade garment industry in India owes its existence to the emergence of a highly profitable market for exports. Ready-made garments account for approximately 45% of India's total textile exports. It has immense potential for employment generation particularly in the rural and remote areas of the country on account of its close linkage with agriculture. They represent value added and less import sub sector. In the recent years, however, the domestic demand has also been growing rapidly. Thus, due to demand it is a good project for entrepreneurs to invest.

Indian and apparel have a history of fine craftsmanship and global appeal. Cotton, silk, and denim from India are highly popular abroad, and with the upsurge in Indian design talent, Indian apparel too has found success across fashion centres around the world. India is the world's second-largest exporter of textiles and apparel with a massive raw material and manufacturing base. The textiles industry is a significant contributor to the economy, both in terms of its domestic share and exports. It contributes about seven% to industry output, 2% to the GDP and 15% to the country's total export earnings. The sector is one of the largest job creators in the country, employing about 45 million people directly.

Historically, male and female clothing has evolved from simple garments like kaupina, langota, dhoti, lungi, sari, gamcha, and loincloths to cover the body into elaborate not only used in daily wear, but also on festive occasions, as well as rituals and dance performances. In urban areas, western clothing is common and uniformly worn by people of all social levels. India also has a great diversity[1] in terms of weaves, fibers, colours, and material of clothing. Sometimes, color codes are followed in clothing based on the religion and ritual concerned. The clothing in India also encompasses the wide variety of Indian embroidery, prints, handwork, embellishment, styles of wearing clothes. A wide mix of Indian traditional clothing and western styles can be seen in India.

Garment manufacturers are primarily engaged in the design, cutting and sewing of garments from fabric. On the industrial basis there are certain areas or sequence through which garments are manufactured. Jeans are pants made from jeans or dungaree cloth. They were invented by Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss in 1873 and a worn still but in a different context. Jeans are named after the city of Genoa in Italy, a place where cotton corduroy, called either jean or jeans, was manufactured. Levi Strauss came from Germany to New York in 1851 to join his older brother who had a dry goods store.

In 1853 he heard about Gold Rush in the West so moved to San Francisco to establish Western Branch of the family dry goods business. There he sold, among other things, cotton cloth. One of his customers was Jacob W. Davis, a tailor from Reno, Nevada. Davis made functional items such as tents, horse blankets, and wagon covers. One day, his customer ordered a pair of sturdy pants that could withstand hard work. He made them from jeans that he bought from Levi Strauss & Co and made them stronger by placing copper rivets at the place’s pants rip the most: pockets and flies. When he wanted to patent them, he wrote to Levi Strauss, and they became partners. They opened a bigger factory, and that is how jeans were born.

Jeans, Trousers, Shirts can be considered as the most widely used garment in the fashion business. It is well known that jeans have had a major influence on the lives of consumers since their inception. Jeans have become symbols for cowboys, women, youth and economic status. Through the ages, jeans have evolved from work-wear to and then to premium wear and functional wear.

Types of ready-made garments

Ready-made garments are divided into the following types:

Outer clothing: and , leisure wear, (e.g. , pants, , ladies‘ suits, , , , cardigans, pullovers, , sports jackets, , shirts (short- or long-sleeved), ties, jeans, , T-shirts, polo shirts, sports shirts, tracksuits, bathing shorts, bathing suits, etc.)

Underclothing (underwear): goods, (e.g. , , , , , etc.)

Most jersey underwear consists of knitwear made from cotton or synthetic filament warp-knit goods (Dederon, nylon). Knitwear is divided into fully fashioned and cut goods:

Fully fashioned jersey goods are produced in finished form and size with securely finished edges; they are a high-quality product, as the loops cannot run at the edges.

Cut jersey goods are cut from tubular knit piece goods and sewn together; they are a lower value product, as the loops can run at the edges and the fit of the garment is not as good as in the case of fully fashioned jersey goods as the knitted fabric may twist out of shape.

2. Bull Denim

[NPCS/4211/23661] Page No. 11

A 100% cotton tough fabric, Bull Denim is constructed of coarse, often slubby yarns with 3×1 twill weaving pattern. It is extremely durable and soft. The fabric is perfect for slipcovers, upholstery, toss pillows, covering headboards, and cornices.

3. Coloured Denim

Coloured Denim is manufactured by dyeing with sulfur than using traditional Indigo dye. A combination of colour finishing is achieved with sulfur dyeing.

4. Cotton Serge Denim

[NPCS/4211/23661] Page No. 12

5. Crushed Denim

Crushed Denim are fabrics that look permanently wrinkled by weaving it with over twisted weft yarn and shrinks when washed. The result can be made even more visible by stone washing and/or bleaching.

6. Dual Ring-Spun Denim

Dual Ring-Spun Denim is also called “ring X ring”. Signifies a denim weave in which both the warp and weft threads are made of ring-spun yarn. It creates a much softer and textured hand than both open-end and regular (single) ring-spun denim. Due to higher production costs, it is usually only used by higher end, premium denim labels.

[NPCS/4211/23661] Page No. 13

7. Ecru Denim

Generally, the denim fabrics are dyed with Indigo colour and Ecru are the one that is not been dyed and has the look of a natural hue of cotton.

8. Natural Denim

A type of ring-ring denim naturally uneven in warp and weft.

9. Open End Denim

Open End or OE Spinning was introduced in the 1970s, reducing cost by omitting several elements of the traditional spinning process. The cotton fibres are ‘mock twisted’

[NPCS/4211/23661] Page No. 14

by blowing them together. Open End denim is bulkier, coarser and darker, because it absorbs more dye, and wears less well than Ring Spun denim.

10. Over Twisted Denim

Over Twisted Denim is made from yarn that is over twisted, giving the fabric a particular crinkled surface.

11. Pinto Wash Denim

A product of Cone Mills, USA; said to be the first bleached denim. In 1969, in Greensboro, North Carolina, a hurricane flooded local Cone Mills plants and warehouses. Millions of yards of denim were soaked with water and had to be dried immediately to avoid mildewing. It seemed a catastrophe, but a Cone Mills merchandiser in the New York office came up with an idea: run the fabric irregularly through a solution to remove the dye and give the denim a faded and mottled appearance. Designers, manufacturers and young consumers all jumped on the new product, making Pinto Wash Denim an instant success.

[NPCS/4211/23661] Page No. 15

12. Polycore Denim

Often found in replica jeans, offers the best mix of the strength of the polyester core and vintage aesthetic of cotton thread layer.

13. Printed Denim

Printed Denim are fabrics printed with a pattern such as batik, stripe or floral, for example-often in contrasting colours and aimed at a very young market.

14. Raw/Dry Denim

Raw/Dry denim are fabrics that haven’t gone through the pre-wash process, therefore they are pretty stiff on the first time use. It takes a few weeks of regular wear to break-in and loosens up the denim cloth.

[NPCS/4211/23661] Page No. 16

15. Reverse Denim

A novelty use of denim-turned inside out to give jeans a really different look.

16. Ring Denim A traditional type of denim fabric, revived in the late ’80s and early ’90-s, using the ring- spun yarn for the warp. Characterized by a softer hand and an uneven surface appearance.

17. Ring-Ring Denim

Ring/Ring or double ring-spun denim uses the ring-spun yarn for both warp and weft. This is the traditional way to produce denim. It’s possible to combine a ring-spun warp fabric with an Open End Weft, to get much of the strength and look of the traditional ring/ring denim at a lower cost.

[NPCS/4211/23661] Page No. 17

18. Ring-spun Denim

Ringspun yarns were traditionally used in denim up until the late 1970s but were later supplanted by cheaper Open End yarns. This is a spinning process in which the individual fibres are fed onto the end of the yarn while it is in the “twisting” stage. The process consists of a ring, a ring traveller and a bobbin that rotates at high speed. The ring-spun yarn produced by this method creates unique surface characteristics in the fabric, including unevenness, which gives jeans an irregular authentic vintage look. Ring-spun yarns add strength, softness, and character to denim fabric.

Market Study and Assessment

Current Indian Market Scenario

India is the sixth largest supplier of readymade garments in the world with a 3.7 per cent share in global exports, as per the World Trade Integrated Solutions database of 2013. Bangladesh and Cambodia are the second and the 14th largest readymade garment suppliers respectively in the global market.

India’s textiles sector is one of the oldest industries in Indian economy dating back several centuries. Even today, textiles sector is one of the largest contributors to India’s exports with approximately 15 per cent of total exports. The textiles industry is also labour intensive and is one of the largest employers. The textile industry employs about 51 million people directly and 68 million people indirectly. India's overall textile exports during FY 2015-16 stood at US$ 40 billion. In FY19, total textiles and clothing export stood at US$ 36.62 billion and reached US$ 22.94 during April–November 2019. Readymade garments (RMG) export from India stood at US$ 16.27 billion in 2018–19 and US$ 10.03 billion during April–November 2019.

The Indian textiles industry, currently estimated at around US$ 120 billion, is expected to reach US$ 230 billion by 2020. The Indian Textile Industry contributes approximately 4 per cent to India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and 14 per cent to overall Index of Industrial Production (IIP). The size of India’s textile market in 2014 was USD99.0 billion which is expected to touch USD226 billion market by 2023 at a CAGR of 8.7 per cent between 2009-23E.

Impact of Covid-19

The demand for readymade garments remains consistent among consumers. However, the outbreak of the novel coronavirus has significantly affected the growth of the readymade garments market in the U.S. and rest of the world. This decline in growth in the readymade garments market is majorly attributed to the disruption of the supply chain. Moreover, halt in the production of clothing, fabric, and other complementary products due to social distancing being practiced all around the world has adversely affected the growth of this industry.

Jeans market in India

Within the overall Indian apparel market, the denim wear market has evolved significantly over the last couple of years. The industry has witnessed rapid growth, triggered by increasing usage of western wear by fashion conscious youths. While globally, the denim industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5 per cent over the next 4-5 years, the denimwear market in India is expected to grow at a CAGR of 15 per cent. There is no doubt that as the Indian economy grows and discretionary spending power of customers increase commensurately, denim is poised to be the fastest growing textile segment. The change in classification of consumer wardrobe has acted as a growth driver for denim wear in India. Denim wear brands are growing across all segments of the Indian market (premium, medium and value for money). International denim brands like Pepe Jeans, Levi’s, Wrangler and Flying Machine etc have witnessed rapid growth over last few years.

Certain factors which are contributing as key growth drivers of denim wear in the country are enumerated below:

Youth as a growth driver Youth (15 to 29 years old) who comprise 26 percent of the consuming population, are a key growth driver of denim wear in the country. Increasing disposable income, comfort, quality and brand consciousness are major reasons behind increasing acceptance of denim wear among this young population.

Influence of international brands The entry of the international brands in the country is one of the biggest drivers of denim wear. Their entry has widened the perspective of consumers which in turn has resulted in higher acceptability of new trends, styles in the market. With the increasing exposure to international fashion trends, the Indian consumer today is aware of global trends and has given him more variety to choose from. The value growth within the denimwear owes to increased demand for enhanced product attributes: fashion quotient, stretch and lightweight fabric, varying colours, styling and detailing. This trend is emerging across both men’s and women’s segments. The aforementioned factors shall combine to drive relatively higher levels of growth of the Mid Premium and Premium/Luxury segments.

[NPCS/4211/23661] Page No. 35

Increased rural spending Rural areas are developing at a rapid pace and so is their purchasing power. With the percolation of mass media, people in rural areas are also aware of fashion trends. Their inclination towards western trends is another reason for the growing demand of denims in rural areas. The mid-value segment of denim wear, characterized by quality, value-for-money, and increasing styling quotient, is the preferred choice of people from rural areas.

Casualization of fashion The Indian casual wear market has evolved significantly over the years. Casual wear categories such as denim, activewear, casual shirts, and fashionable skirts are outpacing the growth of in India. This is reflective of the changing consumer trend and increasing usage of casual wear in offices as well as home. This shift in consumer’s wardrobe towards casual wear has acted as a growth driver for the denim wear in India. The casualization of fashion is not unique to India and is driven by global phenomena.

Alternative retail channel Alternative apparel retailing is evolving in India in a rapid pace; jeans are no exception to this trend. Direct selling, home shopping and e-tailing are gaining momentum in the market.

Rise of private label Branded penetration in the market has a skew towards mid to premium price points and there is very limited offering in the value price points leading to pricing gaps in the market. These gaps in the market have provided an opportunity for retailers to launch their private label in the value segment. Private label led players such as FBB, Max and V-Mart have identified these gaps and have launched products in the value fashion segment. Denim is a high growth category as it is fashionable and comfortable, and enhances style quotient. The value growth within the denim wear owes to increased demand for stretch and light weight fabric, varying colours, styling and detailing. This trend is emerging across all categories (men’s, women’s and kids).

Trousers

India’s domestic apparel market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9 percent. This growth will be driven by an increase in both the per capita consumption of and the average spends on apparel. Currently, menswear is the biggest segment within the apparel market and is estimated to increase at a CAGR of 9 percent to reach US$ 39.6 billion by 2023. Shirts, trousers, denim, etc. largely dominate this segment but there are also categories like winterwear, innerwear, T-shirts, suits, etc. Of these sub-segments, the trouser market is growing at a stupendous pace.

The branded trouser market is growing annually at around 30–35 percent and there are about 60 regional and national brands competing. In India, most brands and retailers that used to focus on menswear have now shifted their attention to promote womenswear as well, including women’s trousers. Consequently, many discount schemes and loyalty programmes are being introduced to tempt women into experimenting with trousers. At present, a bulk of the women’s trouser market is concentrated in the metros and larger cities. However, in the years to come, the category is expected to register deeper penetration into Tier-I and -II cities as well. Contemporary ethnic wear, which is a combination of westernwear with Indian ethnic wear garments like salwar-kameez, does pose stiff competition to women’s formal trousers due to its growing popularity with Indian women.

Shirts

Worldwide, t-shirts have always enjoyed special popularity amongst the youth. In a young country like India with a median age of 27 years, this segment harbours immense opportunities for brands and retailers alike. Indian youth seek comfort and style in their clothing, which is better met by t-shirts compared to woven shirts. A Credence Research report from March 2018 says that India is set to register the highest growth rate for t-shirts sale in the Asia-Pacific region in the next five years. Like elsewhere in the world, the Indian consumers’ distinct shift from formal clothing to trendy and casual attire has provided a boost to the t-shirt market in the country. Comfort characteristics, easy-care properties, affordability, easy-design options and a casual look are the major driving forces propelling the t-shirt market in India.

The emerging trend of occasion specific clothing has given impetus to the growth of casual wear. A peep inside casual wear stores here suggests that t-shirts have a presence that cannot be ignored and also have an ally even among the not-so-fashion- conscious people. The increasing trend of Friday dressing is another driving factor for the t-shirts market in India. Increasing acceptance of t-shirts by corporates is one of the most noticeable trends. Even professional services companies, over the years, have relaxed their to allow t-shirts to offi ce. Initially, t-shirts were being permitted only on Fridays, but with time, such relaxations have been extended to all working days by some companies and are expected to be followed by many others.

Types of fabrics used in garments manufacturing: Fabric is the basic material for manufacturing garments. Garments are made by using finished fabrics. There are different types of fabric used in garments manufacturing. It can be woven or knitted fabric. Various types of woven and knitted fabrics name have mentioned in this article.

There are mainly two types of fabric used in garments manufacturing. Those are- 1. Woven fabric, 2. Knitted fabric.

All the above two types have classified in the below:

1. Woven fabric: Woven fabrics are preferable for their different types of design. This kind of fabric can be easily cut into different shapes and excellent for producing different styles in the garments.

Various types of woven fabric Different types of woven fabrics are vastly used in garments manufacturing, those are in the below: ▪ Buckram fabric, ▪ Cambric fabric, ▪ Casement fabric, ▪ Cheese fabric, ▪ Chiffon fabric, ▪ Chintz fabric, ▪ Corduroy fabric, ▪ Crepe fabric, ▪ Denim fabric, ▪ Drill fabric, ▪ Flannel fabric, ▪ Gabardine fabric, ▪ Georgette fabric, ▪ Kashmir silk, ▪ Khadi fabric, ▪ Lawn fabric, ▪ Muslin fabric, ▪ Organdy fabric, ▪ Poplin fabric, ▪ Sheeting fabric, ▪ Taffeta fabric, ▪ Tissue fabric, ▪ Mesh fabric, ▪ Velvet fabric.

2. Knitted fabric: Garments buyers love knit fabrics for their comfort, texture, wrinkle resistance, and elasticity. Basically, knit fabric is easy to sew with the right machine and stitching technique. Different types of knit fabrics, which are vastly used in apparel manufacturing, are mentioned in the following: Single jersey fabric, ▪ Double jersey fabric, ▪ Burn out jersey fabric, ▪ Rib fabric, ▪ Interlock fabric, ▪ Piquet fabric, ▪ Lacoste fabric, ▪ Fleece fabric.

The different types of fabrics used in custom apparel Custom apparel is used in numerous industries for various applications including for baseball teams, retail apparel for restaurant promotion, giveaways for product launches and this barely scratches the surface. The fabric or garment type selected to embellish as custom apparel often depends on the function of the apparel piece.

Fleece Fleece is a type of wool, generally the wool shorn off a sheep or like animal. A soft fabric featuring a "silky pile," fleece is used as garment liner and in stand-alone form. The fabric is commonly used in the creation of and similar "sweat" clothing, and is a popular option for custom apparel. Screen print and embroidery are also great applications for fleece customization. It’s important to note, however, that deep pile fleece is not good for screen print. Stick with embroidery on that one.

Cotton 100% Cotton is natural, breaths well but does not dry quickly. It resists pilling and tends to wrinkle and/or shrink. Common fabric types for custom apparel certainly includes cotton, a versatile fabric used in the creation of t-shirts and other garments. Just about everyone enjoys the classic, 100% cotton tee, and such shirts offer several printing options, including screen printing and direct-to-garment printing.

[NPCS/4211/23661] Page No. 116

Polyester Polyester is a popular t-shirt choice as it is synthetic & durable, wrinkle & stain resistant, and holds its shape and color well. Today's polyester designs often feature moisture-wicking properties, making polyester an ideal choice for a team softball or bowling league. Cotton/polyester blends are another option as they feature the breathability of cotton but don't wrinkle or shrink as much as pure cotton garments. It’s important to note that polyester and its blends cannot be printed using direct-to-garment technology. Polyester also has a tendency to dye-migrate (fabric dye contaminates printed ink color); so, if screen printing, consider dark ink printing on a lighter garment.

[NPCS/4211/23661] Page No. 117

Nylon Often featured in outwear designs, nylon is frequently utilized in the designing of . For example, a consists of a nylon "shell," filler and polyester lining. Resistant to the elements, nylon is an optimal fabric to use when designing custom outerwear. Also, when screen printing on nylon, a special formula is mixed specifically for the water resistant properties inherent to nylon fabrics.

Leather & Suede Leather is an animal "fabric" as it is made from the skin of cows, goats and other creatures. Suede is a version of leather, or leather than has had the "flesh side" turned outward and brushed to create a velvety, soft-to-the-touch surface. One of the more expensive fabric types, leather is often used in the creation of "Letterman" and company jackets.

Manufacturing Process Jeans, Trousers and Shirts Jeans

Raw Material Checking Once the raw material arrives from the raw material supplier it will be checked using the machinery and then only it will further deliver for the Jeans Manufacturing.

Cloth cutting by the mechanical process Once the denim fabric is checked it will be transported to the Cloth cutting machine where it will be cut into required pieces.

Cutting of the jean is involving three types of operations: • Making the marker • Spreading the fabric • Chopping fabric into the marked sections.

There are six types of machines available for Cloth cutting • Rotary Blade Machine • Vertical Reciprocal Blade Machines • Band Knives • Similar To Band– Saws • Die Clickers Systems With Straight Blades • Automated Computerized Laser Beam Cutting Machines

Once the jeans are cut into the pieces it will pass to the sewing machine.

Sewing by high-speed industrial sewing machine The cut pieces of the jeans are joined into the desired shape by using a power- operated sewing machine. There are two different types of operation are available for the joining of the jeans pieces that are fusing and cementing are processes. 1. Fusing: Fusing is the process where pressure surface area is heated by electric heating grade or steam using hot head fusing presses

[NPCS/4211/23661] Page No. 142

2. Cementing: Cementing is the processes where mechanical pressure systems use with the inbuilt head application.

Embroidery work You can use moulding to change the surface of the jeans into photography of one of its stitch sections by using application of heat, moisture or pressure.

Various moulding process for embroidery work are: • Pressing • Pleating • Blocking Mangling • Steaming • Creasing • Curing • Casting Curing

Trimming and inspection Once jeans are stitching and mould using pressure machine it will be sent for inspection purpose, if there is any fault available in the jeans it will be resent to the repairing purpose or it will be rejected from the production line.

Washing and ironing as the finishing process Once the inspection is done the jeans are sent for the washing where the jeans are getting cells using an industrial washing machine. When washing is done jeans is gone through Ironing and pressing as the finishing product, the jeans are ironing using pressure heating machine.

Packaging Once the jeans are done with all process the final product is dispatch for packaging and transport.

Trousers and Shirts

Pre-Production Process Before starting bulk material sourcing and bulk cutting, pre-production processes are involved. Like trouser sample development and sample approval. Size set samples and PP samples are developed. A manufacturer can start bulk cutting after getting approval on the PP sample.

Pre-production meeting and production planning are done. Industrial engineering department prepares an operation bulletin of the trouser and shirts and prepares line layout.

2. Selection of fabrics, trims as per the buyer Depending on the product detailing and product specification, factory selects fabrics. These activities are performed by the merchandising team. You have many options for fabrics - cotton, viscose, polyester-cotton, wool, linen fabrics.

In a formal trouser, trims - buttons, sewing thread, lining, zipper, labels are required.

3. Procurement of fabric, trims, and accessories Factory prepares a bill of material according to the material consumption and order volume. The sourcing team involved in sourcing of fabrics and other items.

4. Storage of fabric and trims in warehouse After the procurement of raw material, all raw materials are to be kept in a proper place that is in a storage-area/warehouse with ambient temperature, humidity required for the fabrics, and other raw materials.

5. Quality checking of fabric and trims The fabric inspection is done by laying it on the inspection table against the light. Fabric inspection and approval of fabric are done before cutting process so that unevenness in colour/shade or any other faults if any visible in the fabric are eliminated. The same level of checking is to be followed for trims and accessories. If needed shade band and fabric grouping are prepared for different fabric lots. Cutting of different shades is done in different lays. For fabric approval, for some orders fabric sample is sent to a testing lab for verifying physical and chemical properties of the fabric. Fabric must pass the quality checking and lab testing.

6. Pattern making and grading Simultaneously after the approval of the order, pattern master is assigned to make patterns that will go for further marker planning and cutting department for production. The patterns can be made manually or by using a CAD system. After pattern making, grading of the patterns is done for all sizes.

7. Marker planning and cutting A marker is commonly done by large thin paper that holds all the size of pattern pieces for a specific style of garments. Marker is the perfect way to reduce fabric wastage. The marker gives actual guidelines for completing the flawless or correct fabric cutting. Marker making can be done in both ways like manually and computerized methods.

8. Fabric Spreading & Cutting Spreading is a preparatory operation for cutting. The main aim of the spreading process is to lay the several fabric plies essential for the production process to the marker length without any tension on the fabric. The lay height depends on order size, fabric characteristic, capacity of the spreader, cutting method and equipment used. The preference of a mode of spreading will influence the cost of spreading as well as finished garment quality.

The cutting is the process of reproduction of shape of pattern pieces in the fabric during the production of garments. Automatic cutting machine is used for cutting fabric layer. Alternatively, you can use straight knife cutting machine. Sometimes a band knife cutting machine is useful for cutting small components.

9. Ticketing and bundling of cut components Whenever the bundling system is used, it is accompanied by tickets or bundle tickets. It gives fundamental information about the work such as the style number, the size of the garment, the number of garments in the bundle, and the date issued.

After cutting the entire fabric lay, all the garments components in stack form is shorted out as per size and color. To avoid mistakes in sorting, it is better to use code number on each pattern.

[NPCS/4211/23661] Page No. 146

10. Stitching process The next process is the stitching of trousers and shirts using sewing machines. Cutting bundles are moved to the sewing floor and loaded to sewing lines as per the loading plan. In a line, sewing machines of different types are arranged as a vertical line to assemble the garments. The sequence of types of sewing machine arrangement depends on the sequence of assembling operations. The number of sewing machine arrangements per line may be up to 60-70 depending on the design and output quantity of trousers.

Normally, a trouser line is set up in sections – preparatory sections, front section, back section, and assembly sections. In the preparatory section small parts are made and the move to the assembly section. once front part and back part of the trouser is ready, sewing operators assemble the trouser.

11. Quality checking of stitched garments Inline quality checking - Inside the sewing lines, quality checkpoints are kept. Normally, after making each trouser part, stitching quality is checked by a trained quality checker. All garments are thoroughly and carefully checked to detect/find any defect is present in the garment. The defects may be for example variation of measurement, sewing defect, fabric defects, spots, etc. if the defect is possible to overcome, then the garment is sent to the respective person for correction.

End-of-line quality checking – After the garment assembly, an end-of-line checker checks the whole trouser inside and outside. cut the loose and uncut thread tail if found any. If the checker found any stitching defect, missing of any operations, defective trousers are given to the operators who made the defect of missed an operation. After correcting the operation, the end-of-line checker recheck the pieces and passed them for the next process.

12. Washing Washing is an important process in trouser and shirt manufacturing. For cleaning and adding softness to the trouser. Washing is done using mild detergent. Industrial washing machines are used for trouser washing. After washing, the garments are hydro extracted to remove excess water and after this, these garments are dried in tumbler dryer.

[NPCS/4211/23661] Page No. 147

13. Finishing process (pressing and ironing trousers) In the finishing stage, thread trimming is done. 100 percent of the trousers and shirts are checked by the quality checkers. If stains are found on the fabric, stains are removed using spotting workstations. Then individual trousers and shirts are pressed by steam presses on a vacuum table to remove wrinkle marks. Pressman follows pressing instruction. After pressing, visual inspection is done one more time and random measurement checking is done the same checker. Now trousers and shirts are ready for folding and packing.

14. Folding and Packing After the final inspection, the trousers and shirts are folded. Hand tags are attached. As per packing requirement pieces are poly packed. Then trousers and shirts are sorted by color-wise, size ratio wise, bundled and packed in the cartoon. The cartons are marked with important information in printed form which is seen from outside the cartoon easily. The trouser and shirt manufacturing process end after packing the trousers.

Detailed Packaging Process

Garment packaging is the process of wrapping, compressing, filling or creating of goods for the purpose of protection and their appropriate handling. This is the final process in the production of garments, which prepares the finished merchandise for delivery to the customer. It is an important part of the garment manufacturing process. Garment packaging is also use to get lot of attention from the customer. These operations come under the materials handling methods and are no less important than other systems used in the factory. After completing the entire manufacturing task, apparel is required to be packed. After packing, it is placed in cartons as per instructions and then it is stored in a store section before it is delivered to the respective buyer.

Packaging refers to the container that carries a product. Two basic objectives of packaging are preventing any damage to the product during transportation and enhancing the features of the product to the consumer for a sale of it.

Packaging has two major functions:

- Distribution - Merchandising

The main purpose of distribution packaging is packaging the garment in a way that it allows the garment manufacturers to transport the garment at a minimum cost and in the shortest time to the retailer or purchaser, without deteriorating the quality of the product. The merchandising function deals with showcasing the garment product in a way that it stimulates consumer desire for purchasing the particular product.
