TRISTAN UND MATHILDE Inspiration – Werk – Rezeption Sonderausstellung 29. 11. 2014 bis 11. 01. 2015 Stadtschloss Eisenach 2 / 3 Nicolaus J. Oesterlein (1841–1898), Sammler und Initiator der Sammlung DIE EISENACHER RICHARD-WAGNER-SAMMLUNG In der Reuter-Villa am Fuße der Wartburg schlummern manch vergessene Schätze: Das Abbild einer römischen Villa beherbergt die zweitgrößte Richard-Wagner-Sammlung der Welt. Den Grundstein hierfür legte der glühende Wagner-Verehrer Nicolaus J. Oesterlein (1841–1898) mit einer akribisch angelegten Sammlung von ca. 25.000 Objekten – darunter etwa 200 Handschriften und Originalbriefe Wagners, 700 Theaterzettel, 1000 Graphiken und Fotos, 15.000 Zeitungsausschnitte, handgeschriebene Partituren. Das Herzstück der Sammlung ist eine über 5.500 Bücher umfassende Bibliothek, die neben sämtlichen Wer- ken des Komponisten den fast lückenlosen Bestand der Wagner-Sekundärliteratur des 19. Jahrhunderts enthält. Das Archivmaterial stellt nicht nur einen umfassenden Zugang zu Wagners kompositori- schem und literarischem Schaffen dar, sondern ebenso zu musikästhetischen, philoso- phischen, kulturgeschichtlichen und soziopolitischen Kontroversen des späten 19. Jahr- hunderts. Oesterleins Sammlung kann somit als ein Spiegelbild der Wagner-Rezeption gedeutet werden. Die Sonderausstellung »Tristan und Mathilde. Inspiration – Werk – Rezeption« rückt einige der exquisiten Exemplare aus der Sammlung erstmals wieder in die Öffentlichkeit, die auf diese Weise mit diesem unschätzbaren Kulturgut konfrontiert werden soll. Wie die Sammlung nach Eisenach kam In den 1870er Jahren begann Nicolaus J. Oesterlein mit einem enormen finanziellen Auf- wand und einer fast manischen Akribie alles zu sammeln, was mit dem Komponisten in Verbindung stand. 1887 eröffnete Oesterlein ein Privatmuseum in Wien – in den 1890er Jahren brachte er seinen vierbändigen Katalog heraus. Reinhart (Harvard University and NBER) Christoph Trebesch (University of Munich and CESifo) Abstract Two centuries of Greek debt crises highlight the pitfalls of relying on external financing. Since its independence in 1829, the Greek government has defaulted four times on its external creditors, and it was bailed out in each crisis. We show that cycles of external crises and dependence are a perennial theme of Greek modern history – with repeating patterns: prior to the default, there is a period of heavy borrowing from foreign private creditors. As repayment difficulties arise, foreign governments step in, help to repay the private creditors, and demand budget cuts and adjustment programs as a condition for the official bailout loans. Political interference from abroad mounts and a prolonged episode of debt overhang and financial autarky follows. At present, there is considerable evidence to suggest that a substantial haircut on external debt is needed to restore the economic viability of the country. The changing relationships throughout the four oRperas tend to obscure this central idea but, when you think about PRICE it, love is the thread that binds the whole story together—not love confined to a single pair of individuals but love as the alternative to hatred and revenge, power and property, greed and envy. The story begins with love’s renunciation and ends with its triumph as LOVE? the one irreplaceable, transforming ingredient in a new world order. That surely is the significance of the soaring orchestral melody that concludes Götterdämmerung. It is difficult to separate the allegory of the Ring from events in A century before post-Napoleonic europe when rival forces were attempting, on the one hand, to restore reactionary systems of government (think George Orwell’s 1984, of them as the gods) and, on the other hand, to establish new sys- tems of capital ushered in by the Industrial Revolution (think of alberich and his ilk). The result was a chain of political uprisings the Ring warned of throughout europe in the 1830s and ’40s—and incredible intellec- tual and creative ferment. Goethe and Beethoven were alive when the rise of totalitarianism Wagner was a teenager, Charles Darwin was four years his senior, and Karl Marx was five years his junior. -

The question, however, remains as to what extent this report- ed scepticism truly reflects people’s opinions and feelings about Europe. We all consider it normal to cross borders within Europe, often while using the same money, as well as to take part in exchange programmes, invest in enterprises across Europe and appeal to European institutions if national regulations, for example, do not meet our expectations. -
