If you do not feel that the current Salem State dining program combined with the meal plans are an excellent value, what is the major reason why not? (Check all that apply.) • variety and quantity at South Campus • all • N/A • 14-meal mínimum for on-campus freshman but I don’t ever use them all because of timing and homework etc • Food makes me ill • Food is under seasoned and dry

8

• I use clipper cash more than the meal plan • South dining isn't great in variety • Gluten free options are not specified (Celiac), there are no gluten free alternatives in North • Area • I have IBD and it literally rips apart my insides • Both. All gross. Food gross. Just would rather stay away from it • It expensive AF • constantly dirty and unclean plate and glasses (had a glass with a lipstick stain once) (received a green bin that had mold in it) • Too much dining dollars and not enough clipper cash • A cook once said they saw a rat and didn’t do anything about it • All locations • The quality of on campus food is beyond terrible and very unappealing. Some days for example it seems that they have the same food sitting out almost all day. I also go days where I swipe for my mealplan and take no food because of how dissapointed that I am • The quality of the food is beyond terrible. It's not appealing, it's unhealthy, and the quality is so bad. I've found mold on my food before, can't believe the school is ok with serving this disgrace of a dining service. • I barely eat school food so why have a 14 meal plan. A waste of my money. • The food is not cooked well, I have many vegetables that are raw and rice that isn’t cooked enough • After eating the food in both dining halls, my stomach hurts and I frequently I have gas problems. • There is not enough variation or options at any point, and what food there is is not appealing visually for taste-wise. • All dining halls • Forced to pay for more meals than I use • For what I’m paying, I’d expect the food quality to be better and have more variety other than all day. The food sucks and should be made more professionally with better grade food • Upper North • The food is over cooked. Dry chicken • Same exact thing every night, very few good choices, many times food is overcooked, strange food choices no one eats, and they don't ever restock sodas or refill the water jugs between lunch and dinner. Often times plates and utensils aren't washed properly, and the tables aren't regularly cleaned. • Not sure of other meal plans so I can't say if this is excellent • I am have a soy intolerance so it is hard for me to know what's in the food I am eating because it is not usually specified, there needs to be more consistent alternative to beef options like veggie or turkey versions (ie turkey burgers), I have asked multiple times for the dining hall to be stocked with some almond milk because I don't drink cow milk and as mentioned I cannot eat soy but those requests tend to be ignored • I cannot adjust my meal plan based on my needs. • All locations • Commuters pay a lot of money to eat at the dining halls

9

• north dining • Food is gross • Lower north, south campus • upper north dining • Foods not good • The food is overpriced in comparison to how much dining dollars we get • Marsh dining is consistently dirty. Specifically by the drink machine the floors are soaking wet and sticky 24/7. Plates and cups are soaking wet from the dishwasher still. The food irritates my stomach every time I eat there so I have stopped eating there entirely (have not been once in weeks). • I'm forced to have it regardless of if I want it • so many carbs!!! • I'm a picky eater, and a lot of what is provided is pretty random/out there. • Marsh and North dining just FEELS gross the moment you walk in • The food is so bad, worse food ever • I get sick from everything I eat. I have a stomach ache or I’m in the bathroom • Bad food • I can't transfer dining dollars to clipper cash and that's annoying.

If you do not have a meal plan, what is the major reason why not? (Check all that apply.) • food sucks • it’s awful and a waste of money • Vegan • Atlantic Hall only gives dining dollars and not meal plans. They do not put enough dinning dollars on the clipper card which does total out for the whole semester • The food choices are lacking. The food is definitely not at a nutritional level. It should be shameful what is being served to the future leaders of the world. Maybe things could actually be prepared from scratch and not from boxes. • Resident meal plan • Occasionally dine at restaurants near campus • The food is horrible. • only am at school 3 days a week • I have food allergies and there is not a lot of options for me. • Food allergies • Fake (GMO) foods are not healthy • No offered for Graduate students • No dining options close to social work building and no way to get from social work building to dining options • I use dining dollars for the dining hall, as I have the commuter plan • Not on campus enough to have a meal plan • Not enough opportunities to use meal swipes to get my money’s worth • On-campus dining venues are not near my housing • offer rtd meals

• I use clippercash

The major reasons for eating off campus is/are? (Check all that apply.) • As an RA it is easier to eat off campus, especially when on duty. The dining hall hours directly contradict our duty hours on weekends. • Occasionally eat off campus at lunch time while doing errands. Otherwise most of the off-campus dining is for social reasons at dinner. • Enjoy eating away from students. • I don't live on-campus so other places can be more convenient. At the moment I don't eat off-campus in Salem very often, more in my home town.

I rather spend my own money than use my meal plan. • The food on campus can be so unappealing that I would rather spend money out of my own pocket to purchase a good meal. • Clarity of pricing structures, sometimes the combinations of offerings are strange to my palate • vegetarian options • During Summer nothing is available on campus • Better food • The food tastes better. • More vegan options available off campus. • Food at dining halls is inconsistent and has few healthy options, also appears non- fresh with many additives • I don’t feel sick afterward! • Minimal choices --O'Keefe • I live off campus • Selection at Bertolon is terrible. If I have to leave the building, I will go find better food. • on-campus dining is gross • I don't have a meal plan

17

• Use of debit card • Not many Vegan and gluten free options. It’s always either gluten free OR vegan. I I need both! • On-campus is fine, but it's the same food every day. Marsh Cafe doesn't let people in who bring lunch. If half of your group buys and the other brings, you're not going to Marsh. • food taste better , on campus food is horrible • just ease of ordering and delivery • Most of the food on campus is not healthy or tasty. • The food is better • Why not? • I work on the shuttle, and I usually go off campus during my breaks to get food, since all of the dining halls are closed during my shift. If you have any additional comments that you would like to share pertaining to dining on/off campus, please provide them below. If not, please proceed to the next page. • Many of the employees, especially in Marsh dining last year, were extremely difficult to talk to about my allergies. I have Oral Allergy Syndrom, making it hard for me to eat some types of uncooked or undercooked vegetables. This means my healthy options at the dining hall are extremely limited as I can't "just have a salad." Subtle changes that would make the food not only healthier for myself, but for many others is baking the fries, completely grilling the chicken (not just baking it and then marking it,) and having grilled chicken offered more consistently. As an RA in a freshman dorm, I do not have the option of cooking my own meals. As of right now, if I could afford to eat solely off campus, I would. • The quality of food needs to increase significantly. People are not as interested in eating on campus, because there are limited choices, limited hours, and the quality is not good. In fact, most people either bring their lunch or go off campus to lunch more than any other school that I have ever worked at in the past. • I would like to say that food here at Salem State is decent, can be pretty good, and compared to others here I am not one to complain about it. With the dining halls, there are good days and bad days; some days the food is great and some days it is not so great. As a commuter I only come in for lunch really; would probably not want to live off the food alone. When I occasionally do go to breakfast it can be dicey, and I wish that there were possibly some less greasy options there. In my opinion (at least at Lower North Campus), the food is generally better quality when American/European/Caribbean in theme, which the staff seems to know the best, and lower quality when more exotic, such as some of the Asian options I have seen. Once this semester there were ribs at Lower North campus as part of an "Asian" day that were unfortunately so tough that I had to get rid of them, which I never like doing, and the Asian rice tends to be to be a bit dry. Yet, I've also had some nice American-style pork there, some nice pasta & potatoes, and the salad bar is usually pretty good, to

26

name a few things. It's really a toss-up when it comes down to it, though generally it is fine for what I need. • I used to be able to grab a slice of pizza in lower north for a fast meal at a fair price - last time I tried there was a fixed price for everything whether you got a whole big meal or not, too high a price for a slice of pizza. I have not been back since. Taking this option away is very disappointing. • I recently tried to go to the Salem diner at 8:30 on a Saturday night. It is posted online that the diner is open on saturdays from 8-11pm, however when we walked all the way there it was closed. This was very frustrating because the dining hall closed at 6:30 so my friends and I then had to order food and wait even longer to eat. I understand things happen but it should not be posted that something is open and get there and it’s closed. I tried called the number given on the website for the diner also and there was no answer.

I would also like to say that as a student athlete I have practice until 8 many nights of the week. I usually get to marsh dining hall around 8:30, however many of the options are put away or not being refilled. This is also frustrating because I am hungry after practice, and the dining hall is open until 9 so I should have access to all the food options. When I asked for the staff memebers why this was happening they were rude and said they start putting things away around 8, which does not make sense because the dining hall is open until 9. • I love the shrimp tempura sushi, but it seems to be the only thing that is both fast and appealing to me as I only ever am at South campus. Everything else is either a salad which takes time to eat or is a vegetarian/vegan meal. I have nothing wrong with those options but I would like some animal protein options that are fast and easy, as I don't get to eat as much foods I like anymore due to time and financial restrictions in my life. • all the time the dining hall makes food that looks good and has no need for meat, but they put it in so I can't have it and don't make a nonmeat option.

I've gotten excited about premade: grilled cheese, sandwiches, pasta, mac and cheese, stir fires just to get close and see it has meat in it, when that is not a required part of the meal AND that there are none without. • More hours, better food, better area. • Better and fresh food prepared accordingly. Dishes and silverware washed properly. • Dining hours don’t work-

Closing at 10 is ridiculous, lots of people eat breakfast at that time. Same with 2 for lunch- lots of people have classes that get out at 1:30’

Also the eggs in North are always cold • Dining on campus is extremely better this year than it was in my freshman and sophomore years. Also much more allergy friendly in lower dining, upper not so much. I can’t really get anything in the north food courts, the one time I got a pre-made item from the fridges and thought that there was no way a chocolate pudding could have come in any contact with shellfish I was wrong and had an allergic reaction in class. So it kind of sucks when I want to grab something before driving home or for the drive home and can’t or have very limited options. • Allow areas for student athletes to put their equipment • Chartwells staff is amazing and very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, their food is not. I had to take a semester off from Salem State because I got so sick from the food.

27

I am still debating whether or not to find a way to get off the meal plan, as (of now) it seems to be a financial waste. I’m hoping to not have to resort to this, and would love to help make changes happen • Lower cafe should have more options and stay open later. What happens when us student living on north campus are hungry need to walk in the freezing cold to Marsh. I’d rather not eat but I’ll have to make the walk • Use some Goya for the spices. Some salt wouldn’t be bad either • get rid of chartwells • Many colleges offer students Late Night dining hours where Thursday-Saturday dining halls reopen at night. I feel that many SSU students would take advantage of this option. • The chicken is dry • On weekends having the Marsh Dinning Hall open until a later time will be very helpful towards all students. Also during week days because their are a huge percent of students who are up late studying and having the availability to hot meals can help. Lastly providing more option like maybe taco Tuesdays, fried Fridays, or different type of foods (Indian, Italian, Caribbean) • I feel that the dining programs are not keeping up with the influx and diversity of students coming in. Whenever I would have friends sign me into one of the dining halls, the only options that seemed okay was the pizza chicken and fries. I didn't want to touch anything else. The best on campus dining are starbucks and salem diner, two places that are barely even run by the school. • Make south campus available on the weekends and be able to use meal swipes for the south campus residents. Make it available on the weekend. And staff it with more than one person. Also would help to make it look more appealing like marsh and north!! • Better bagels, better pizza quality, mozzarella sticks, more convenient hours • Lower north not good • I would like to have more inspection on the variety and quality of food at north dining hall lower commons because they barely have healthy and fresh food. Also, since it’s getting cold now, I would really recommend to include soups for dinner and lunch at both marsh dining hall and lower commons dining hall. Also, there should be more options during breakfast time since there is always the same variety of food. They should include a better variety of food and a healthier option too especially for breakfast period at both dining halls. Thank you. • The ketchups pumps are never filled, and also ice rarely works in the soda machines so I have to drink it warm. • Marsh and lower dining could use more of a variety of options and better hours. • Items in the faculty dining could be more cohesive i.e. Meatloaf with rice and pasta dish. Mashed potatoes and green beans and a dish that would not need pasta sauce or meatballs would be better. Things have improved with gravy and sides more appealing to the main courses over the past few months. Jen does a great job with her soups as well. • The biggest problem is in the quality of the food, the availability (time dining halls are open), and the cleanliness of the room.

Quality of food - always COLD. Vegetables never washed.

Availability - Why open for dinner on weekends if you're only going to open for two

28

hours?

Cleaniness - 7/10 times I will get some utensil or plate that has a stain or leftover food caked on the plate. • I love the ambiance of the starbucks on campus but it is poorly run in that it runs out of food all the time. You are leaving money on the table, get more breakfast sandwiches! Also I would dine a lot more on campus if you had just normal sandwiches and wraps that were healthy. Library outtakes has like 5 sandwiches and most of them are weird like corned beef. I would spend a lot more money on campus if there was more food to buy that was conveniently located. I dont even know where lower north dining is. The only thing on north campus and in Bertolon that doesnt close early and doesnt run out of food (hello Starbucks) is the Dunkins in Meier, which I love, but sometimes I dont want to eat a Dunkies egg and cheese on a bagel. Or at the very least make commuters aware of where lower north is in case this has all the sandwiches and wraps ive been dreaming of. But mostly the starbucks is what needs work. I love it very much but it is constantly running out of things that you could make money off of if they were available to buy. • I believe food service should be equitable across the campus. South Campus does not have the options available at Central and North Campus. • More vegan options that aren’t prepackaged chickpea salad • Make the food more filling. • It is hard and unfair to judge ability to provide enough food or creatively display food for a catered event if the event coordinators are uncertain of the actual group attendance. • The previous question answers is my experience thus far with the current staff. We had several issues prior to them coming on board and it has improved steadily over their time here. • 287 Lafayette had no food options, it pushes students, faculty and staff to eat off campus. • the food could be better quality • There needs to be more options for people who order for meetings/large groups. If I'm going to schedule a breakfast, I only have a few options, and most of those options require I have at least 15 people or I need to order a la carte, which consists of "pastries, bagels, muffins, or fruit". I need more options and the limit needs to be eliminated. Isn't it possible to order the "yogurt bar" and scrambled eggs without having to pay for both packages. Lunches - we need more options that we currently have. • I think it will be a tremendous tragedy if we don't have a cafeteria to go to to buy foods such as burgers, soups and coffee. I don't think it makes sense to put a "store" where the South Campus cafeteria is now. This would not only affect the students in an adverse way but also the faculty and staff as I rely heavily on going down to the cafeteria for soups and coffee. • There need to be a greater quantity of vegetarian options at catered events. There should be some vegetarian soup options at the dining halls. Why have a faculty dining hall? Why not have it be for faculty and staff? Also why don't the faculty/staff just get their food at the main area that the students use and then just have a spot where they can sit separately? Isn't that all that is needed? I think there is too much food waste at catered events. There need to be recycling containers placed prominently at outdoor catered events. Do we need an Outtakes open for so many hours at the Library? Should it just be open when the other options are not?

29

• You need to have more options. I am sick and tired of eating the same food every day. I am also disappointed and angry about the amount I am paying for COLD GROSS food. Is is really that hard to make GOOD WARM scrambled eggs that dont have some weird crust on it. I would cosplay if you didn't make me pay so much or if you gave me the option of making my OWN food, but as a freshman third is no oven or stove top in the dorms. I dread going to the dinning hall every time I need to eat be. Abuse of how gross it is. When I want to get a sandwich at the deli station the Turkey is covered in some liquid and the game is ALL fat it is disgusting. You need to fix this. This is probably one of the main reasons why people go home on the weekends or commute. Clearly you need to get a new food provider. You guys are making meals that are easy but they ARE DISGUSTING. • This semester, Starbucks is CONSTANTLY sold out of staple menu items, like the sous vide egg white bites and the egg wrap. Please order these in sufficient quantities for the level of demand. • Gluten free options provided in North is pathetic. I have Celiac Disease and none of the foods are labeled and therefore I have no clue if I will be sick while eating there. There should also be packaged food options such as rolls, bagels, muffins, and cookies. • I go to Life Alive in downtown Salem if I have time around once a week. They are all vegan and vegetarian. It would be great to see more vegan and vegetarian options at Salem, like a hot wrap or bowl with rice, veggies, and have it be super fresh. I only leave campus because I want more vegan and vegetarian options, but if there was more on campus, I would definitely stay and spend my money there. • The food that is being offered to our young students is sub par! There are no balanced meals. Fried and calorie latent foods are the main sources of sustenance. I have been asked to eat with a few fellow classmates, but have had to respectfully decline. I declined because the food not only looked like it came from a box, but it looked like nothing was prepared with pride. No quality! Deep fried this and carb loaded this dredged is dripping and toppings....don’t forget to grab a slice before you finish your Mac and cheese and French fries. It appears that the school is promoting unhealthy options.

The cafe in Bertolon screams for help. The staff is not professional. Some of the nicest ladies work here along side of a few that are not so nice.

There is never enough sweeteners for coffee and at times, there is not even coffee. If more sweeteners are asked for, students are told that there are no more. Really? And we are expected to pay $2.00 for a 16oz cup of coffee that we can’t even fix the way we like it? It’s not gourmet (and who really cares?) and it is self-serve. The cafe still charges $2.00. This is absurd.

I’m a bit opinionated (as if you couldn’t tell), but I am telling you what I see wrong with the poor food and slightly better service that is being offered to my fellow students and myself.

Is this how you would like your children to eat when they are away?

• It would be nice if there was always mashed potatoes and healthy vegan options, like not just rice and broccoli, make more vegan dishes with tofu. • There should be a way for meal swipes to roll over or become dining dollars if not used

30

because nobody wants to used 14 meal swipes because eating in the dining hall that much would make people sick. The food is unvaried and it is made in mass quantity but terrible quality. • Vegan options are a must! Not only is veganism the most sustainable way to eat to help the environment, it is also the healthiest and most beneficial, when provided the proper meals, for learning college students. • The meal plans need to be cheaper, and the a new brand of burgers or not having them fried. Food should always be warm and after awhile it gets luke warm or cold. There should be more gluten free, vegan, and vegetarian options for people. More private areas to sit, and comfortable chairs. • I am a commuter, so I do not have a meal plan. If there were better food options I would rather stay on campus than leave for lunch when I do not bring my own food. • The Faculty Dining area needs help. • Events should have , hot dogs, not always steak tips and chicken. And chips and sodas should always be an option. Coke products. • Having worked directly with many students and received their feedback and complaints about the university, the university should immediately discover alternatives in the student dining areas. If solutions are excellent, employees will benefit in those areas during work hours. Faculty dining area is hit or miss, usually low on quantity and area is a mess. Silverware and plates needs update. Food in Central Campus BSB café known to make people sick. Chartwell's gets a bad reputation but does well with catered events. Breakfast is safe. Deli meats and anything handled a lot by staff is a risk from my experience. Serving areas are not well protected from customers touching and coughing. Kitchen in BSB is admittedly out of date and poorly ventilated according to kitchen crew. • 1. They do not return phone calls.

2. Staff needs to be trained.

3. A very unresponsive group.

• It is sometimes difficult to find catering items on the website when ordering. But everything else is great! • Important points and observations so far:

- lacking cleanliness of tables after people finish (it makes me cringe to find those tables so dirty after the lunch hour), and that also calls mice and rats, which I have also seen.

- trash cans need to be hands free for hygiene, that is lacking so far.

- more drop off points for plates/dishes and/or signage for students are needed to avoid so many dirty dishes left around and on tables

- More grilled and low-fat meals would be appreciated, without overcooking the veggies, and/or allow us to pick half of salad and a meat, without charging for them

31

separately.

- Please stop trying to remove the benefit of take-out food, that is important, especially for those of us who work until late and have lunch after 2pm, or need to eat in our office.

- Please offer more than one soup option a day -- healthy things, not greasy, salty or heavy.

- I used to eat at the staff dining area between 3 and 5 times a week, but the meals are not quite what adults need… healthier, low fat, more veggies, less salt. Adults don’t need the amount of calories kids need to study. More healthy options would bring some of us back.

• I eat at the North Campus Dining Hall most often, and this year I have seen many improvements to the variety of offerings on the upper (2nd floor) level. I do wish that the lower level would go back to the a la carte options that used to be offered. Sometimes all I might want is a slice of pizza but at the flat rate lunch fee of $7.50 (I think?) it is not worth it. • The sub station on north campus is fabulous. Elizabeth and Archie do a wonderful job, and I get a sandwich from them at least once a week. Kay is beyond incredible, as is Kim. There's always a smile to greet me from Carmen, Rachel, and Arlene. It makes my day getting my coffee from the food court. And, the Pho beef was excellent! I had that this week for the first time. :) • The Chartwells staff are always pleasant and hard working. • Seriously, the only reason I am surviving is because of Orlando. When he cooks meals, I am able to function well without getting food poisoning. His bright and positive demeanor is something to look forward to every day. And during the weekends when he isn't working, I feel a deep sadness because I know that I wont be eating well. If he quits, I am not sure what I'll do. • Quality of food needs to improve. The options are good but overall quality is poor. • The dining staff is very professional, friendly and overall great. It is a pleasure to work with the staff. • I would really like to see nutritional information wherever it can be provided. • The Dining halls are dirty and gross and I am forced to pay $2,000 a semester for a meal plan I don't use becuase I am a vegetarian and cant eat anything in the dining hall and the employees are not clean with the food and its gross and a waste of my student loans so please fix it or allow students to opt-out of having a meal plan. • It would be much appreciated to not see mice while im eating dinner • when you are catering an event, sometimes the breakfast items are just too large. • Can we lose the Pepsi monopoly? It's been DECADES. Years ago you could choose either Coke or Pepsi products. If we have to have an exclusive deal, can we put it out for bid again? • Students who live on campus have little access to the dining hall when they want food. I, personally, have classes during the "normal" meal hours and have to rush to get food right at the beginning of the hours. However, if the dining hall was open 24 hours a day or at least a little more than its normal hours currently, then I would actually

32

enjoy eating. Also, the food quality needs improvement. Every time I go to the dining hall, the only thing that is edible are either the tater tots or the wedge fries; that's it. So, I wish the quality and quantity of the food was more. • Sushi bar should be open past 2:30 • Friendlier staff at Central cafe. Bring cleaning woman back to Central. She did a great job and was very friendly. • I would like to be able to order a full days refreshments for an event on one catering order, rather then one for breakfast, one for lunch and one for afternoon snack. Chartwells staff is awesome. • The Marsh Dinning Hall is 100% better than the Lower Dinning Hall. One concern tho for lunch at least is that the menu is practically the same each day. Need a variety in my foods, not the same things every day. • we do not need anything fancy just cooked food, clean things to eat and drink with, and more options so we can be happy and healthy. • There seems to be the same food a lot of the time. Even if there is variety it has a lot of oil and salt in it, there isn’t much flavor and needless to say it makes me miss Home cooked meals a lot. • more vegetarian options please :) • I would love if Burger King had Fish Sandwich. Also less meat foods. Maybe Halal food. • The hours are so inconvenient and I live at Bates so I feel like I can never get anything to eat. I have never eaten at South Campus dining because every time I have gone it has been closed. • I feel so sick from eating food on campus that I try the best I can not to eat there. Please fix this. • Telling students how to use the just ask program or how to submit a recipe would be helpful. • The food needs to be cleaned and cooked properly. There needs to be sufficient staff and options at all times during the day at all campus's • I lost 15 pounds instead of gaining 15 pounds my freshman year because the food is so disgusting and inedible • We just want healthy option and not have to eat fried food every day • O'Keefe canteen is pathetic in offerings and abbreviated schedule, first and last 3 weeks of each term there is little to no service. Some of the food items have been sitting on display for days. • I have been to other campuses and they have better quality and a wider range of options to offer their students. I think if the food was healthier and tasted better students wouldn't mind paying extra money for a meal plan. Students have to go off campus anyways for better tasting food, So in the end it basically equals out to the same amount of money. • I just want to say that I have been on campus now for almost three years, as I am an Junior here at Salem State and a resident within viking hall. I believe the overall food quality and variety on campus especially in Marsh Dining hall has been severely lacking over the years. This year I have gone several days where I saw no appealing food and ended up leaving after swiping and just having one drink. I wish that the dining hall would provide foods of better quality and appearance. I understand that we are paying for a meal plan, but increasing the meal plan charge for better quality ingredients, or better cooks/chefs would make all the difference. I also want to acknowledge the fact that there have been times where Silverware was not dried and

33

just left wet air drying within the containers. This also includes a limited supply of condiments such as ketchup, mustard, not being available or ran out. Despite these problems I want to say the staff are the most friendliest people on campus and are very enjoyable. I hope my concerns will be addressed and read for the future of students here at SSU. • There are huge problems with the food at Salem State. It is oftentimes undercooked and therefore inedible. There are also many nights where the meal bar is not actually a meal (ei nachos or a baked potato bar). Vegetarian and gluten free options are severely lacking and allergens are almost never listed. Less importantly, the food lacks in flavor and hardly ever enjoyable. • I really don't know why this school would be ok with service this low of quality of food. I pay so much money to have a meal plan on campus because I'm forced to in order to be a resident and I'm not even able to use all of my meal swipes because of how awful the dining halls are. To serve us food that is moldy, unhealthy, not fresh, and lacks quality is unacceptable. I've gotten sick so many times from eating the food on campus, it's absolutely horrible. And now I'm spending money out of my own pocket so I'm able to have a meal once a day. It's beyond unacceptable and I'm so tired of the quality of food getting worse and worse. Something needs to change. • The food on campus has never been my favorite option. It would be nice to see the food improve and if that means getting rid of Chartwells and bringing in a different food supplier, then that is absolutely necessary in order to keep students and faculty happy with the food choices served at the university. • Food and drinks are left way too early prior to the meeting time. This is problem not only with the temperature but also food scavengers take the items before the meeting begins--leaving little food or drinks for the invited guests. What remains behind is food that clearly has been manhandled, finger prints on the serving tray, etc. There must be a way to "lock down" these catered items prior to a meeting start. • Please make sure the plates are clean. Some plates look dirty. • I would urge the dining halls on campus (marsh and lower common dining) to add more healthy options and a better variety of food PLEASE if possible. • ODD choice pairings of food in Faculty Dining Room. • I went to a catered event where there were fruit bowls that had fresh and canned fruit were combined! This made for a mushy disgusting mess by the time a few people had eaten it. While SSU is dealing with financial constraints, the decisions about food combinations and approaches to meeting the needs really need some work. Also, the menu at the Salem Diner is abysmal. The space is hot in the summer and doesn't have functioning AC it is inhumane for employees to work under those conditions. • Faculty Dining Room had variety. While Marsh has choices, seating isn't that comfortable. No meal options at Central Campus Building. • When food is catered for an event at SSU (for example, meetings), there should AUTOMATICALLY be vegan/vegetarian options made available. I cannot tell you how often I've had to attend an event where "lunch will be provided" and there was NOTHING vegan--not even the salad dressing was vegan so even a salad wasn't an option. This is not acceptable in 2018, and I am not the only person who feels this way. Thanks in advance for your attention to this. • The quality of the food seems to vary with changes in personnel. Really too bad. You can tell when a cook/chef has left due to the change in quality. Also, there needs to be more options that are vegetarian, nut free, gluten free. • Better heating systems that is supposed to keep the food warm, because some of them don’t work and when I serve myself some food it’s automatically cold

34

• dining halls should be open 7am- midnight Monday through Thursday. 24 hours Friday through Sunday • Ladies at the Harrington building cafe are very nice!!! • PLEASE list your ingridents. When I was frequenting the dining hall last year and following a vegetarian diet, I had a bowl of mushroom soup that made no mention of having meat, yet was FULL of beef. This is an issue of health and safety of students. • The quality of the food in the diner is very poor • Prices actually visible so we don't have to guess

• Have more options or at least let commuting students know where they can find food when they have food allergies. • The food here is an absolute disgrace. The amount of money we are putting into this instituion for it to”ffill us up” with luke warm chicken, burgers, hot dogs, and potatoes, vegetables that are room temperature and have no flavor, desert that has the texture of a foam mattress, cereal that is stale beyond belief, french toast thats hard(?), pancakes like hockey pucks, plates that arent cleaned, and silverware with old stains on it! I have to eat before rehearsals and class and I can’t work to my best efforts because my stomach feels like I would have diarrhea at any moment while im in the middle of a lecture or during a monologue in a dress rehearsal! Something needs to be done! These halls must be open for as long as they possibly can for convenience to all students of all schedules, and the food must be inspected and improved greatly to health standards and superb quality.

Thank you.

NP • please make better food.

35

just please • South Campus needs more options and friendlier service • The staff is always kind and professional. The quality and choice of food is ok, not great. I don't get the feeling that I am eating in a particularly healthy way when I eat on campus. The posted catering menu is terrible and never changes. I have had success in working with the office to create a better menu. It is a drag to go to events and always have the same cookies and brownies. And/or spanikopita, stuffed mushrooms, or that cheese plate that no one eats. Variety and the perception of organic/healthy is needed. We have an increasing Chinese student population and their opinion is that the food all tastes the same and is not healthy. We need to meet their needs. • Please just make the food. Everything tastes reheated. I just want something that was actually made right before I ate it and didn't look or taste awful. • Variety, healthy choices, ethnic diversified menu, cleanliness, price very important. • Kristen Martin is absolutely WONDERFUL to deal with. The mini bottles of water that you charge $1.10 a piece for are ridiculous and a complete rip off • it would have been beneficial to separate the surveys into an 8:30 to 5ish and an I only eat lunch on campus survey. • The Bertolon cafe is where I eat lunch every day. I usually bring food, but not always. If there were more Dairy Free options (like the sushi last year) I'd be a lot more inclined to eat there. If there were a standing chinese food station, I'd never get food anywhere else.

Also, with the new specials down there on Thursdays - They should be advertised on Wednesdays so I can decide if I need to bring a lunch or not. Makes it very hard for people with food allergies if you can't plan ahead. • Thank you for the survey. I believe this is a very proactive idea for the students. Very thoughtful. • Need more vegan, halal options.... • The prices are too high. Burger King now seems like the cheapest option for a la carte lunch on North campus. • I will consider getting the commuter plan only if I can get more vegan, gluten free and organic options. There have been days where only rice and potatoes were the only options... I cannot get all my nutrients through just those 2 foods. When you serve foods I suggest you put the cheese and butter (or other toppings) in a bowl on the side so kids can put if they want. There have been times where I cannot eat carrots because they are soaked in butter sauce. • The food could be better for the price. My freshman 15 is not happening due to low quality of food. • I choose to plan what I eat. Therefore I am unlikely to choose campus food unless it's a sandwich from Bertolon as that menu is consistant and reliable. .

Apparently the food service management staff does not prefer to plan.I say this because there are no accurate menus are posted anywhere on campus - you just show up and see what's available.

36

• Rotating, published menus with a few every-day items (like sandwiches) would be great. The cafeterias are treated like revenue streams, not social centers. Rather than encouraging employees to go off-campus because of limited seating (specifically at Central Campus Cafe), make it a place where everyone -- whether you bring your lunch or want to buy on-site -- will go. Marsh Cafe is inflexible. It's fine for students on a meal plan, but completely inconvenient for employees. How about creating an atrium out of the Building 1 courtyard, that can be used for functions, provide more space, and encourage gatherings instead of finding ways to close down the Central Campus Cafe? • The last several events the food had been boring and not fresh. • Dining on campus has been a little difficult since I am a vegetarian. There are more choices for us at the Lower Dining Commons on North Campus but it is still the same food offered almost every other day. The food here is good, I just would like to see more options. Myself and the people I have spoken to are getting sick of the same meals every day. • I would like to see some blending of foods--not mexican with chinese or italian---

gravy or sauce with meat that tends to be dry--meatloaf, pot roast, turkey etc. • The food in the faculty dining room is appalling. I would rather pay more money for better quality food, which is why I bring my meals, or go off-campus. • The cold cut selection looks like plastic and taste like plastic. Have got moldy food. Variety would be welcome, especially at the Bertolon. Having food during the times students are not here would be nice. Clean space when students are not here. Employees are still here. Don't run out of food, soup, rolls, etc. • one on one discussion regarding level of dining service needed • I really like the addition of a salad bar at lower north! • The tuna sushi forbidden rice bowl a week or so ago was amazing. I would love to be able to buy that on a regular basis. • Change the menu options to include more foreign food on a regular basis. Also set up more than one or two food bars a night like 3 or 4 maybe. Make the Mac and cheese bar more available. Also start looking into using better ingredients and start preparing food in other ways, for example pancakes should be prepared differently so that if some people don’t like the way they are prepared, there are more options for how it’s prepared. Also get better coffee than just the green mountain. Like have a coffee bar the same way there’s a Mac and cheese bar and ice cream bar. • Please try to include more fruit throughout the day. • South campus needs to be included too. The nursing building has little to no options at all and only accepts cash which is not convenient. • I love how easy it is to find out what might have been in contact with foods I’m allergic to this year! So far this year the foods available have allowed me to maintain a healthy weight instead of loosing weight (I’m already bordering on under weight, options for different proteins, carbs, vegetables/fruit, and desert has aloud me to gain 2 pounds and maintain the weight gained which is a big thing for me and usually very hard). All the staff is also extremely friendly and helpful. • I personally like Marsh Dining hall and go there every day when it opens at 4:30. I enjoy how there Is a station that is always changing and will change to ice cream or dessert later on in the night. The wrap station is very good if I have time to wait in a line. I also enjoy the pasta salad and soups every once in a while! • Please change what we're eating. Nutrition is a big part on campus for both

37

commuters and especially residents and we pay a lot of money to come to this school. More variety and better food has been a complaint at this school for YEARS, so its clearly time for a change • I feel like the dining halls need to get better at having healthy options and simplistic options. We can have chicken but we don’t need chicken with mushrooms and other stuff all over it. Be more simple and have clean fresh lettuce for the salad. Fresh fruit replaced every 6 hours same with lettuce like I don’t wanna eat healthy cuz the healthy options are either to complicated or the salad legit has dirt on it and the fruit is mushy. I would like to eat healthy and continue my studies without constipation from eating pizza and pasta at every meal (the only edible things) • I understand that cooking for thousands of people is really difficult and I applaud chartwells for doing so. But, the food is honestly best way I can say it is TRASH. They offer the same misserable stuff everyday and there no variety in what they serve. I’ve had encounters and some of my friends have had encounters were the workers don’t even know what they were serving. Good example of this is my vegetarian fried who was said to be served tofu but was OBVIOUSLY SERVED CHICKEN. Then the next day after being confronted the workers put up a sign about a new tofu thing. WHERE WAS THAT SIGN BEFORE funny how they have new tofu right after serving a vegetarian what I said before was clearly chicken. Chartwells is not doing a good job at accommodating the needs of the SSU students and either needs to shape up or ship out. • 24hour dining halls!! • There should be more organic vegan options. Also, spring water would be nice instead of nasty Aquafina and dasaini • great food selection, wish the prices were a little more flexible while it's fair to compete with the nearby restaurants a small reduction of .50 cents or so would probably attract more people to come because it would be more affordable than going to any other place. • Please get rid of Chartwells. Self-operate like UMass Amherst and Westfield State. • every time I've had food from Marsh and Lower North, I feel ill for the rest of the day and often into the next day and so I stopped going. I feel that it is unfair to require students to buy a meal plan nevermind so many meals, I don't eat 14 meals a week so it was stupid that I had to pay for that many my freshman year. • North dining has greatly improved since I started attending here in 2012. Kristen in dining services is incredibly friendly and receptive of feedback. All of the staff at North is so friendly and bend over backwards to help the students, talk to students, and make folks feel welcome at the institution. I feel obligated as most students will, to specifically shout out Kay and Kim at Upper North. The sushi guys are fantastic as well. • Have a late night option!!

And have more options at the station where they make the food in front of you! • Please bring turkey burgers back they're delicious and well received, and have more non-beef/pork options, display the main ingredients in items that are common allergens/restrictions, better hours ESPECIALLY on the weekend, expand vegetarian/vegan options • Please season the food and cook it all the way. Also not sure if you guys do this all ready, but hairnets are a must, I got hair in my food all the time last year. • We love Orlando!!!!

• There should be more food options, students want a freshly cooked meal to feel like home and to taste delicious, not stale and cold or with no flavor/seasoning. There should be a variety and all dining halls and areas should operate 24/7. • We just need better hours, more food, and way better quality food. • I get hungry at weird hours and I’m an RA I work an additional 23 hours a week at SSU preschool, I don’t have time to eat when you are open so I just don’t eat • New vendor, new cooks, new quality • Each semester it would be cool if you switched one or two bars up. • More Options and better quality food, definitely a cleaner dining hall kitchen and eating space • Marsh dining is unclean as a whole. At certain times in the evenings there are no tables left to sit at. The lines for food that is tolerable (such as the sandwich line) are ridiculously long and then the sandwiches are not even wrapped properly or made correctly. It is an annoying process trying to get someone's attention when I want a veggie burger and then have to wait for 10 minutes when everyone else is able to just get in line a grab burgers that were already made. Tofu is the only vegetarian option and it is made the same way every time. It is as if everyone just assumes every vegetarian loves tofu. I already referenced this earlier but the mess by the soda/drink machines is absolutely ridiculous every night. The floors are soaked and sticky and the solution is plopping down a yellow "Wet Floor" sign rather than cleaning it up.... Due to all these reasons I do not go to Marsh Dining anymore (I waste my 19 meal plan every week) and spend all of the money I make on buying groceries for myself or eating out. • I thought the food service/ available options would improve from last year but it’s only gotten worse. What’s the point of paying for a meal plan I don’t even use? • late night options would be great! just dont forget about south campus. • The Upper North Food Court should bring back its snacks and more options as it seems they took a lot out. I don't have a meal plan because I am a grad student and don't live on campus. When I was undergrad I was a commuter and didn't have a meal plan either. I used ClipperCash to buy food from the Food Court and Dunkins and Outtakes at the library. Students who don't use the meal plan and dining commons are valid too. • They all do a great job! • the staff are wonderful people and are really kind. • There needs to be more breakfast resteraunts included in Upper North or on North campus in general, and the Salem Diner is very nice but has little options that aren’t a hot breakfast. Adding homemade muffins or scones on the grill would be a nice touch to draw in more students and members of the Salem community. • I have a dairy allergy and I have a lot of trouble finding dairy free options. Often times places on campus will say "sorry we ran out of almond milk" or other dairy free options for food will be unavailable. Additionally, I've noticed that many of the dairy free options for foods and drinks on campus are more expensive. For example, there is an additional charge for having almond milk in my coffee when I know for a fact that almond milk can cost the same (sometimes even cheaper) than regular milk. As someone with an allergy, it's very frustrating and feels unnecessary. • The food is not good and not accessible hours, do better ! We pay for this. • Label things! Please. I need to know what I'm eating because a lot of people dont know what actually contains gluten even though they think they do. And I've had staff be unable to tell me if something is or is not gluten free. do you read/keep packaging in these instances? I really just need to know what I'm eating. And more options for

people with allergies and dietary restrictions! I can basically only eat salad most days because everything is fried and has batter on it (which contains flour and gluten!) • there are lots of carbs in the food options • The shutdowns between meals at marsh are aggravating. Classes get out at 10:40 and people mill around in the area in marsh where you use a meal swipe waiting and people get irritable.

On weekends I never wake up in time to get food, I end up having to wait until dinner opens, but more likely I decide not to wait and order food instead.

Things get burnt easily and often at the dining halls. Burnt pizza, overcooked burgers, mushy pasta.

I got food poisoning last year from the alfredo sauce. In lower north. So did many others. But I had no clue how to report it.

The effort put into making decent food dwindles after the first month. By the middle and end of the semester, food isn't something I eat for taste or to enjoy, it's just fuel I need to eat because I spent all my money on off-campus dining and used all my dining dollars. • It is unconscionable for SSU to fail to meet the dining needs of students enrolled in evening classes at South Campus. The Harrington building is already in great disrepair with embarrassingly limited accessibility for students with disabilities, the least that could be offered is decent hours, pricing, and variety to meet their dining needs. • Impeach chartwells • The food should be changed, countless people I have spoken to have gotten sick from the food. I myself am allergic to milk and I am sometimes forced to eat it as there’s not many options I shouldn’t be forced to get sick because there isn’t anything I can eat, I don’t eat as much as I should I rely on snacks because it is the same food day in and day out always sandwiches, pizza, pasta, and a chicken dish, alwyas the same things. • Vegan/vegetarian options are important. Faculty education about these items are important. Readily available nutrition and ingredient information is important. Organic and local foods are preferred if available. Cross contamination is an issue in the salad bar and animal products should be separated from non animal ingredients. • I'd appreciate if Marsh was open between lunch and dinner. I have an odd schedule, and I can't always make it in time for the lunch period, so I just have to not eat or get a snack from the vending machine. • Please bring in some quality , authentic food to this school. Chartwells cant get it right. • Please bring back potstickers • Marsh needs more gluten free options, there use to be a whole dedicated section and now there is not

• More dinning dollars. 24 hour 7 seven day a week dinning. Better food selection. Better food company • I find it very difficult for someone like myself to find food that fits my diet. I understand that my diet is not the norm of health but it's so easy to make some changes that everyone would enjoy and benefit from, such as adding quinoa as an option other than rice, using healthier oils to cook with. Always having a surplus of organic fruits, the apples aren't tasty at all and I believe that's a reflection of its quality. Especially on a campus setting foods that are offered should be giving students a boost in their mental capabilities and energy, not slowing them down due to the excess of unhealthy options. • There are minimal vegetarian options, and the options that are available are almost always the same options which is awful! • I really wish we could transfer dining dollars to clipper cash, I rarely if ever go to the dining halls. • Please get better food • Get better food • Ditch Chartwells. Do something more interesting with the Salem Diner. It's too unique a space to waste on bisquick pancakes. Consider letting hospitality use it as a lab space, etc. Ditch Pepsi, make SSU a Coke campus! • I would love a faculty/staff dining room on Central Campus. • Because we have so many staff who work during the summer, it would be great to see Starbucks and other locations open past 2. All year round, it would be good to be able to eat past 2, since not all of us can take lunch during a traditional lunch period. Need more lower-cost but good quality healthy, non-processed, non-fried food options. I also think we have a responsibility to feed our student somewhat healthy options. It is disappointing that the cost of my serving sandwiches and salad to 20 students was double the cost of me serving them pizza. Also, the sandwich choices were not enough--who really eats egg salad or ham salad? I want to support Chartwells but end up ordering from Stop and Shop because I can get more variety and larger quantity for a similar price. Also, I don't know why you have get get coffee and drinks when your order a salad for an event through Chartwells and if you indicate that you don't need the coffee or drinks, the price is still the same. We can't just assume our students will only eat chicken fingers and pizza--especially if we only ever serve them chicken fingers and pizza. • Please invest in the Central Campus Food Court (Bertolon Cafe). There is a kitchen and space, but no investment is made to utilize it. I'm sure it doesn't currently make much money, but if any attention was given to build out the menu and service, I'm certain it would become a popular dining spot. • The Chartwell's menu is limited, boring, and hasn't changed for years. The food tastes packaged, pre-frozen, and artificial. • The North Campus dining Commons and the lower dining hall need to be kept much more clean. Central Cafe is in sore need of clean help in and around the food area as well as the back kitchen • Last spring we had a stir fry event in the faculty dining area for our award students. The stir fry chef arrived at the start of the event, instead of early to cook some of the food, it resulted in a long line of students waiting for there food to be prepped. • The snack bar at O'keefe is awful • Summer offerings are limited. Would like to see better options. • Chartwell's is over priced and the food expectation is poor.

• I will say that as a vegetarian it is extremely challenging getting something to eat - items aren't labeled well, there are often simple fixes (like using vegetable stock instead of chicken stock) in food that would be an easy substitute to be more inclusive. Yesterday I went to North Dining and there were no pre-packaged vegetarian options except peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (which have almost no peanut butter and jelly on them and primarily high cost sliced bread) and the only pre-made salad was a ceasar which consists of lettuce, some shaved cheese, and some croutons - that isn't a complete meal for a vegetarian. It is inconsistent and often the same item....while there are at least a dozen meat sandwich items to choose from. I would also say that there needs to be more a la carte options - breakfast for instance you are extremely limited to what you can buy unless you purchase an entire buffet all you can eat downstairs on North. The upstairs options are limited. Having been at schools like UMass Boston which have a great a la carte breakfast you see far more people going because there are lots of options....it's a chicken/egg situation. People won't come unless it's good with variety. We hear the excuse "well no one comes to breakfast so that's why we don't up the game".... • Please offer more up to date variety of catering item. Salads need to be fresh and not just lettuce tomato (out of season tastes) cucumber. Be a bit creative. Not just students are eating • I would like to see the dining area at Marsh Hall have take-out. • Yes. The issue is not what type of food is available but how to improve the quality of what is available. It doesn't matter what is available if it is not a vastly better quality than currently. I don't not eat on campus because of lack of variety but because most of the food is almost inedible. • I don’t have any food restrictions but I have many people close to me who do have such restrictions. It is absolutely essential that safe and delicious options are available to all of the community. I hope that your polling is to determine the approximate amount required of such options, and not to establish IF they are necessary. It should go without saying that all communities should be able to enjoy a meal. (Try cheese sandwiches are not an acceptable GF option, by the way.) • The Chartwells service team is phenomenal. Jo and Adam work so hard and always make sure we have everything we need before an event. • Provide reusable dining ware and utensils at all catered events. Eliminate the faculty dining room to encourage interactions between students, faculty and staff withing the dining hall. • closing at 2PM is too early. It would be nice if lunch could be served till 3PM for those who have class back to back till 1:30PM. It's often not enough time to get lunch
