Gloucestershire Ramblers Area Highways England A417 Missing Link Public Consultation Response 0. Introduction November 2019 gloucestershireramblers.org.uk/A417 [email protected] Ramblers have been campaigning here for around 20 years for through traffic to be removed from local roads (preferably with a tunnel) to make them walkable and crossable again. The landscape would stay the same. The aims can be summarised as - Keep the Cotswold Way and Gloucestershire Way on their Authors’ line - Ensure safe footpath crossings - Retain the landmark Air Balloon Inn – a meeting place for walkers The current proposals - Divert the Cotswold Way and Gloucestershire Way - Extinguish footpath crossings - Demolish the Air Balloon. Ramblers’ Charitable Aims Defend footpaths, protect places we like to walk, improve access, let the public know what we do. In March 2018 Ramblers rejected both options 12 and 30 but offered to work with Highways England to ‘green up’ Option 30. Simplified or Greened Up Option 30 was evolved which - deletes the direct link road to Birdlip (none of the tunnel options have a link road) - keeps the roof on the tunnel as it passes below the Air Balloon car park - uses green flanked bridges where possible along the route for gain in biodiversity interconnect At no stage has taking the road below the Air Balloon site (using relatively low cost tunnelling methods such as at Hindhead) been considered as part of the consultation. In January 2019 Ramblers became concerned about the direction of proposals for the scheme & agreed that landscaping funds should be used to ‘green up’ the new road in preference to the current one. -

Although it’s essential to bring a torch, the Black Mountains are part of an official internationally important “dark sky” area so, given a clear night, you will be walking in spectacularly bright moonlight with amazing shadows. These are some of the darkest skies in Western Europe. The Greater Avon Valley Way Nigel Andrews writes: I have devised a new 48 mile route from Bradford- on-Avon to Portishead via Bath and Bristol. It is designed to be fully supported by public transport, with stations at Bradford-on-Avon, !1 Avoncliff, Freshford, Bath, Keynsham and Bristol and, one day, Portishead. -

DRAFT Gloucestershire First 26 April 07 THE GLOUCESTERSHIRE URBAN ECONOMIC STRATEGY 2007-2015 INTRODUCTION 1. Urban Gloucestershire lies astride the M5 and is made up of Gloucester City, Cheltenham Borough and parts of the Borough of Tewkesbury and Stroud District. With a total population of 310,800 and forecast by 2026 to be at least 370,800 this is a significant urban conurbation particularly in regional terms, as evidenced by the identification of Gloucester and Cheltenham in the draft Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) as two of the regionally Strategically Significant Cities and Towns (SSCTs)1. Within the Gloucestershire economy this urban area plays a vital role. Defining Urban Gloucestershire Urban Gloucestershire cannot be delineated precisely on a map without limiting some initiatives unnecessarily. In general it is those geographical areas of the Central Vale that have a concentration of people and businesses that by working together can complement one another and increase the economy of Gloucestershire. It therefore includes the whole of Gloucester City and Cheltenham Borough. It also will generally include, within Tewkesbury Borough, Tewkesbury Town and Ashchurch as well as the parishes of Brockworth, Hucclecote, Churchdown, Innsworth, Longford and embraces Gloucestershire Airport and Dowty/Smiths, although there are some aspects of these that are also 'rural' and will also be covered by the Gloucestershire Rural Economic Strategy. Similarly it will also generally include in Stroud District the settlements of Hardwicke and those others that comprise the defined Stroud Urban Area: Stonehouse, Stroud, Thrupp, North and South Woodchester and Nailsworth, although parts of these are also 'rural'. Economic and administrative boundaries are not identical. -

The NRA has a wide range o f responsibilities for the control of the water environment, in particular: • conservation of water resources • pollution control • flood defence and flood warning • maintenance and improvements o f fisheries • nature conservation in water related habitats • promotion of water based recreation • control of navigation in some areas CATCHMENT The NRA’s vision for the future is of a healthy and diverse water MANAGEMENT PLANNING environment managed in an environmentally sustainable way balancing the needs of all users of water. To achieve this vision, the NRA is taking an integrated approach (ie bringing together its own activities and those of other groups and organisations) to management o f river catchments. South Gloucestershire Review of the BAE Systems Aviation Options Report for Filton Airfield December 2011 South Gloucestershire Council Filton Airfield Purpose 1. To report the conclusions of work undertaken in response to the Full Council Question No.3 dated 19th October 2011, in respect of Filton Airfield. Background 2. In April 2011 BAE Systems Ltd announced its decision to close Filton Airfield at the end of 2012. That decision has significant implications for the District and wider area including the programme for the Council’s emerging Core Strategy. 3. The Council has in the period since April 2011 undertaken widespread engagement to listen to the wide ranging views being expressed in response to the closure announcement and to better understand the issues which arise from BAE Systems Ltd decision to close the airfield. 4. The Council is committed to having its Core Strategy ‘examined’ by an independent Inspector at the earliest reasonable opportunity with view to adoption of the Core Strategy in the summer of 2012 if possible. The consequences of not having an adopted core strategy are far reaching. It is therefore very important that both the position in respect of Filton Airfield and more generally are resolved as quickly as possible. 5. In order to better understand the reasons advanced by BAE Systems Ltd for closing the Airfield, and to explain that decision as part of the engagement process, the Council invited the Company to prepare and publish an Aviation Options Report. This summarises the key information and aviation options considered and which led BAE Systems Ltd to conclude that the Airfield is not thought to be viable or needed. -
John Corbett Way (6¾ - 7¼ Miles Linear Walk)
Walk H - John Corbett Way (6¾ - 7¼ miles linear walk) Probably more than anyone else, the "Salt King" changed the character and landscape of both Stoke and Droitwich. The John Corbett Way starts at Avoncroft Arts Centre (close to his matrimonial home at Stoke Grange), goes past Stoke Prior Church where he is buried, through Stoke Works where his fortune was made, on to Wychbold with its Almshouses, then alongside his magnificent Chateau Impney and finally into Droitwich. Most of the farmland was owned by him. Whilst the walk can be done in the day, breaking it into sections makes it easier to describe. Keep a lookout along the Way for the signs of the Raven, his trademark. Parking is available at the start of the walk and in Shaw Lane (points 5, 6 & 8). The Navigation, Ewe & Lamb and The Crown will probably allow walkers to park but please check. Parking at the end of the walk in the public car park outside Waitrose (point 16). Note: large parties must make prior arrangements with Avoncroft Arts Centre if using their car park (tel. 01527 833829, e-mail: [email protected] ). SECTION 1 Stoke Heath / Avoncroft Arts Centre - Stoke Works Easy no stiles. Reasonable footwear. About 2 miles. 1. Avoncroft Arts Centre. From the Avoncroft Arts Centre car park, return down the driveway to the A38 and turn left almost on yourself through the gate onto the enclosed path. Cross the driveway leading to Stoke Grange (Corbett's matrimonial home, now occupied by Bromsgrove School). Previously, it had many interesting associations as Avoncroft with the Cadbury family, adult education and farming improvements. -
