Jake Sisko and Cosmic Black Adolescence in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine When Jake Sisko has big news to break to his father, he agrees to go on a week’s sailing trip in a boat his father built. The moment Jake finally confesses that he wants to go to school to be a writer, rather than follow in his father’s footsteps, is the moment their ship gets pulled off course by a strong current, disabling their navigation. But that lack of navigation – a defining feature of Jake’s adolescence – doesn’t leave him stranded for long. As one of the first characters in the Star Trek franchise who gets to keep his racial identity as African American, along with his father and the series’ lead Benjamin Sisko, Jake is a character in unknown territory for the pop culture behemoth, and as such, never perfectly fits in with the “utopia” that the Federation of United Planets represents. Unconscious in the opening scene where his mother is killed by Borg-controlled Picard – the lead of the previous Trek series – the first time we meet fourteen year old Jake is next to a peaceful, holographic pond on a Federation ship. Jake is a child of the Federation and its promise of peace and diversity; but aboard the non-Federation boat that his father built – a small, engineless spacecraft that travels by solar wind – and the non-Federation space station on which he spends his adolescence, Jake is also forever outside the seemingly utopic Federation. Turning away from a future in Starfleet, his desire to be a writer allows him to critique the Federation. On that same space-sailboat, Jake shares with his father a short story he wrote in which he empathizes with the Maquis, a Federation-labelled terrorist group. While recent years have seen work done on race in Deep Space Nine, no work has been done on Jake Sisko and his experience of adolescence. Growing up on the space station, Jake learns of the Federation’s faults as the audience watches, and his literacy and growth as a writer highlight his nature as both promise and critique of a system that preaches diversity but fails to follow through with empathy. .

Beyond the Final Frontier: Star Trek, the Borg and the Post-colonial Lynette Russell and Nathan Wolski Over the last three decades, Star Trek has become, to use Bernardi's term, a "mega-text" (1998: 11). Star Trek's mega-text consists of much more than the various studio-produced television series and films - it also includes (among other things) novels, Internet chat groups, conventions and fanzines. That Star Trek's premise of space exploration is a thinly disguised metaphor for colonialism has been extensively analysed (see Bernardi, 1998; Hastie, 1996; Ono 1996; Richards, 1997). Boyd describes the utopian future presented in Star Trek the Next Generation (STNG) as based on "nineteenth-century essentialist definitions of human nature, building ... on faith in perfection, progress, social evolution, and free will" (1996: 96-97). Exploration, colonisation and assimilation are never far from the surface of the STNG text. Less apparent, however, are aspects of the series which challenge the hegemonic view of this narrative and which present a post-colonial critique. In this paper we will explore a range of post-colonial moments and an emerging self reflexivity in the second generation series, focusing on those episodes of Star Trek: the Next Generation (STNG) and Star Trek: Voyager which feature an alien race known as the Borg. Others in space Much has been written about the role of the alien in science fiction as a means of exploring issues of otherness. As Wolmark notes: "Science fiction provides a rich source of metaphors for the depiction of otherness and the 'alien' is one of the most familiar: it enables difference to be constructed in terms of binary oppositions which reinforce relations of domination and subordination" (1994: 2).

Raumschiff Enterprise und die moralischen Dilemmata an den Grenzen des Universums Hanno Loewy Ein kobheerianischer Frachter bringt einen rätselhaften Passagier auf die Raumstation Deep Space Nine. Der Mann leidet offenbar unter einer seltenen Krankheit, dem Kalla-Nohra Syndrom. Major Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor) lässt den Unbekannten festnehmen, denn er weckt einen Verdacht in ihr. Wie fast alle Folgen der Serie StarTrek, hierzulande besser bekannt als Raumschiff Enterprise, präsentierte auch Duet (die deutsche Fassung wurde unter dem Titel Der undurchschaubare Marritza ausgestrahlt) 1993 ein moralisches Dilemma. Und wie in so vielen Folgen von StarTrek spielten die Sternenvölker der Cardassianer und der Bajoraner dabei eine besondere Rolle. Doch davon später. Auch nach 1997, als in der nächsten Staffel Voyager sich StarTrek auf den Weg nach Hause zur Erde, machte trübten die spannungsreichen Beziehungen zwischen Cardassianern und Bajoranern so manches Mal die Stimmung an Bord. Nun ist StarTrek tatsächlich wieder „zu Hause“ angekommen. Raumschiff Enterprise fliegt nicht nur wieder, die Serie heißt nun auch so: seit September 2001 führt in den USA die fünfte Staffel der Science-Fiction Serie den Klassiker in seine eigene Vorgeschichte, seit März sind die neuen Folgen nun auch in Deutschland zu sehen. Als Kirk und Spock vor bald vierzig Jahren zu ihren Reisen ans Ende des Universums aufbrachen, konnte man sich schon denken, dass uns dort unsere eigene Gegenwart begegnen würde. Fantastische Chiffren einer amerikanischen Utopie im Umbruch, eines Melting-pot- Universalismus der seine inneren Widersprüche zu erkennen begann, der im Modell einer neuen Welt die Gegensätze der alten zu entdecken begann.
