Doctor Who: Earthshock - One of my favourite stories that got me into Doctor Who. I have always enjoyed the DVD film version of this story and this audiobook just completes it! It's dark, eerie and an excellent Cybermen story.

It was interesting to see some elements similar to later TV plots - for instance the idea of a planetary library this time infested with bugs rather than the more scary Vashta Neradaa graveyard of the Tardises and a Time Lord killer - and in 'Who's That Girl' there appears to be a female Doctor.

When Doctor Who returned to television, the BBC advertised the show with a particularly punchy trailer including a fireball special effect, and Christopher Eccleston saying of the new series: “It’s not quiet, it’s not safe, and it’s not calm.” The same can be said for the music by Murray Gold. It’s not quiet; the music is not occasional or ‘incidental’—it’s an integral layer. Melody and dialogue happen at the same time. It’s not safe; there are over 30 identifiable musical motifs in the first 13 episodes. Half of the motifs are used in more than one episode, and most actively support story arcs. You can’t create that many pieces of musical composition over 10 hours of broadcast and get them all completely right. There are a few missteps. It’s not calm; the styles used stretch from Euro-technopop to opera, Philip Glass to Latin dance. It’s not the same as the old Doctor Who music, and it is wonderful. Scoring Who There are four types of music presented in Doctor Who in its 21st century incarnation. The first is the overall series theme, functionally the same as its initial creation in 1963. The general frame of the theme as devised by Ron Grainer, Delia Darbyshire, and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop is so recognizable by people all over the world—including many who have never watched the show—that there would be no possibility of changing the melody; interpretation is restricted to instrumentation and percussion choices and the resulting mood choices highlighted by each re-mix.

    DOCTOR WHO AND THE RIBOS OPERATION By IAN MARTER Based on the BBC television serial The Ribos Operation by Robert Holmes by arrangement with the British Broadcasting Corporation Chapter 1 Unwelcome Strangers The tall loose-limbed figure, clad in voluminous shirt-sleeves and baggy tweed trousers tucked into creaking leather boots, strode around the faintly humming chamber. His nose was buried in an enormous tattered chart which he held up in front of his face with long, outstretched arms. From time to time he stopped in mid-stride and muttered unintelligibly to himself before setting off again, deep in thought, in the opposite direction. Suddenly the chart flew out of his hands. He uttered a short bellow of pain and hopped about clutching an injured knee, his movements grotesquely reflected in the polished metal walls surrounding him. Then he stood still and glared at the hexagonal control console which pulsed and flashed in the centre of the chamber. Cant you look where youre going? he cried, with a resentful frown. He picked up the chart and spread it out over the mass of switches, buttons, dials and lights which covered the buzzing console. Smoothing the crackling, curling edges with large, careful hands he pored over the maze of faded patterns printed on the thick, brittle paper. As he bent forward with a frown of intense concentration, his rugged features were dramatically illuminated in the fluorescent glow spilling over them. Suddenly his eyes opened wide and he fixed a spot on the chart with a piercing stare. Thats the place... he cried, straightening up and ruffling his shock of curly brown hair with both hands.
