(The DSB was published in 14 vol- umes in 1970–76, edited by C. C. Gillispie, New York: Charles Scribner's Sons.) I was later asked to write two more entries: for Parseval and Emil Leon Post. The entry for Post had to be done very quickly, and I could not have finished it without the generous help of one of his relatives. By the time the last of these articles was published in 1976, that for Giovanni Vailati, I had come out publicly as a homosexual and was involved in the gay liberation movement. But my article on Vailati was still discreet. If I had written it later, I would probably have included evidence of his homosexuality. The seven articles for the Dictionary of Scientific Biography have a uniform appear- ance. (The exception is the article on Burali-Forti, which I present here as I originally wrote it—with reference footnotes. -

This section features some of the religious scientists who appear in different entries on these Faith and Science pages. Some of these scientists are well-known, others less so. Many are Catholic, many are not. Most are Christian, but some are not. Some of these scientists of faith have lived saintly lives. Many scientists who are faith-full tend to describe science as an effort to understand the works of God and thus to grow closer to God. Quite a few describe their work in science almost as a duty they have to seek to improve the lives of their fellow human beings through greater understanding of the world around them. But the people featured here are featured because they are scientists, not because they are saints (even when they are, in fact, saints). Scientists tend to be creative, independent-minded and confident of their ideas. Agnesi, Maria Gaetana (1718-1799) Catholic Christian A child prodigy who obtained education and acclaim for her abilities in math and physics, as well as support from Pope Benedict XIV, Agnesi would write an early calculus textbook. Maria Gaetana Agnesi Melissa De La Cruz Maria Gaetana Agnesi's life Maria Gaetana Agnesi was born on May 16, 1718. She also died on January 9, 1799. She was an Italian mathematician, philosopher, theologian, and humanitarian. Her father, Pietro Agnesi, was either said to be a wealthy silk merchant or a mathematics professor. Regardless, he was well to do and lived a social climber. He married Anna Fortunata Brivio, but had a total of 21 children with 3 female relations. He used his kids to be known with the Milanese socialites of the time and Maria Gaetana Agnesi was his oldest. He hosted soires and used his kids as entertainment. Maria's sisters would perform the musical acts while she would present Latin debates and orations on questions of natural philosophy. The family was well to do and Pietro has to make sure his children were under the best training to entertain well at these parties. For Maria, that meant well-esteemed tutors would be given because her father discovered her great potential for an advanced intellect. Her education included the usual languages and arts; she spoke Italian and French at the age of 5 and but the age of 11, she also knew how to speak Greek, Hebrew, Spanish, German and Latin. Historians have given her the name of the Seven-Tongued Orator. With private tutoring, she was also taught topics such as mathematics and natural philosophy, which was unusual for women at that time. With the Agnesi family living in Milan, Italy, Maria's family practiced religion seriously. -

A close reading of Bathsua Makin and Anna Maria Van Schurman’s essays in relation to one another, and within their social and historical context, reveals the importance of ideas of religion and social order, especially class, in understanding and justifying women’s education. -

McCrindle 2002.35.1 ENTRY This monochrome panel painting, or grisaille, [1] made in preparation for an engraving by Cornelis van Dalen the Younger (Dutch, 1638 - 1664) [fig. 1], depicts a learned lady of international renown: Anna Maria van Schurman (1607–1678). [2] Van Schurman was born in Cologne on November 5, 1607, to Frederik van Schurman and Eva von Harff, both of whom came from wealthy and noble Protestant families. [3] By 1615 Anna’s parents had settled in Utrecht, where she soon demonstrated remarkable talent in embroidery, calligraphy, and the making of intricate paper cuttings. In the 1630s she took lessons in drawing and engraving from Magdalena van de Passe (Dutch, 1600 - 1638), daughter of the engraver Crispijn van de Passe I (Dutch, c. 1565 - 1637). Van Schurman began making small portraits, including self-portraits, in a variety of mediums, among them pastels and oils, and small sculptures made of boxwood or wax. In recognition of her artistic abilities, the Saint Luke’s Guild of Utrecht gave her an honorary membership in 1643. [4] Van Schurman was renowned even more for her intellectual concerns than for her artistic accomplishments. James Editors 1. Introduction Clifford Truesdell was an extraordinary figure of 20th century science. Through his own contributions and an unparalleled ability to absorb and organize the work of previous generations, he became pre-eminent in the development of continuum mechanics in the decades following the Second World War. A prolific and scholarly writer, whose lucid and pungent style attracted many talented young people to the field, he forcefully articulated a view of the importance and philosophy of ‘rational mechanics’ that became identified with his name. He was born on 18 February 1919 in Los Angeles, graduating from Polytechnic High School in 1936. Before going to university he spent two years at Oxford and traveling elsewhere in Europe. There he improved his knowledge of Latin and Ancient Greek and became proficient in German, French and Italian.These language skills would later prove valuable in his mathematical and historical research. Truesdell was an undergraduate at the California Institute of Technology, where he obtained B.S. degrees in Physics and Mathematics in 1941 and an M.S. in Math- ematics in 1942. He obtained a Certificate in Mechanics from Brown University in 1942, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Princeton in 1943. From 1944–1946 he was a Staff Member of the Radiation Laboratory at MIT, moving to become Chief of the Theoretical Mechanics Subdivision of the U.S. Naval Ordnance Labo- ratory in White Oak, Maryland, from 1946–1948, and then Head of the Theoretical Mechanics Section of the U.S. -

Es ergeben sich zahlreiche Anwendungsf¨alle,zum Beispiel bei nichtlinearen Problemen der Linearen Algebra, bei der nichtlinearen Mechanik etc. Im Fall der nichtlinearen Mechanik ist es das Ziel, Spezifika der Struktur zu erhalten, wie beispielsweise Orientierung, Inkompressibilit¨atoder Nicht-Ausdehnbarkeit, wie es bei elastischen St¨aben der Fall ist. Außerdem k¨onnensich zus¨atzliche Nebenbedingungen ergeben, wie im wichtigen Fall der Optimalsteuerungsprobleme. [Brognoli, 1785, 85]2 1. Introduction “Shortly after I arrived in Milan I had the pleasure of meeting Signora Countess Donna Maria Agnesi who was well versed in the Latin and Greek languages, and even Hebrew, as well as other more familiar tongues; moreover, she was well educated in the most important Metaphysics, the Physics of the day and Geometry, and she knew enough of Mechanics for the purposes of Physics; she had a little knowledge of Cartesian algebra, but all self-acquired as there was no one here who could enlighten her. Therefore she asked me to assist her in that study, to which I agreed, and in a short time she had, with extraordinary strength and depth of talent, wonderfully mastered Cartesian algebra and the two infinitesimal Calculi,3 to which she added the application of these to the most lofty physical matters. chapter 12 Warning against the Pietists: The World of Wilhelmus à Brakel Fred van Lieburg Abstract In 1700 the Reformed minister Wilhelmus à Brakel published a voluminous compen- dium of theology in the vernacular for a Dutch lay audience. The book immediately proved a best-seller. Still in print, it remains highly valued as a work of devotional lit- erature among Dutch neo-calvinists. In the third edition (1707) the author added a new chapter, delineating Reformed orthodoxy against various forms of ‘natural’ reli- gion. Brakel appears to have been very apprehensive of the developments in German Pietism. The genesis and content of the new chapter, warning his audience ‘against Pietists, Quietists, and … Spiritless Religion Under the Guise of Spirituality’ show how a prominent minister like Brakel found himself moving the frontiers between Reformed orthodoxy and rationalism, reacting against some of the pietisms of his day, and evolving towards a ‘new Protestantism.’ 1 Between Reason and Piety At the turn of the eighteenth century, Wilhelmus à Brakel (1635–1711), ‘Minister of the Divine Word’ in Rotterdam, published his Λογικη λατρεια, dat is Redelyke godts-dienst (Logikè Latreia, that is Reasonable Religion). The author could not have predicted that his voluminous work would become and remain a best- seller.1 Although the title might suggest a commitment to contemporary ratio- nalism, in reality it referred to the apostolic vocabulary of earliest Christianity (Paul’s letter to the Romans, 12,1).
