FOSSIL ICE WEDGESAND GROUND WEDGES IN SEDIMENTS BELOW TILLAT VOSS, WESTERN NORWAY JAN MANGERUD & SVEIN ARNE SKREDEN Mangerud, J. & Skreden, S. A.: Fossil ice wedges and ground wedges in sediments below till at Voss, western Norway. Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift, Vol. 52, pp. 73-96. Oslo 1972. In a 3 to 4 m high section, the following four distinct sediment units exist: At the base a well-sorted sand of uncertain origin; above this a bed of till (believed to be lodgement till); above this bedded sand, silt and clay, presum ably deposited in an ice-dammed lake; and on top, a younger lodgement till. All the sediments below the upper till are cut through by two different types of wedge-like structures. The wedges of the first type are filled with unsorted sediments and are interpreted as fossil ice wedges. The second type consists of vertically laminated clay and silt, presumably a kind of ground wedge. The sediments and the wedge structures are believed to be of either Allerod/ Younger Dryas age, or from older Weichselian interstadials. J. Mangerud, Geologisk institutt, avd. Introduction Voss is situated in a broad and deep west Norwegian valley. The valley floor is 45-75 m a.s.l., while the surrounding mountains rise to between 1300 and 1400 m a.s.l. (Figs. l and 2). Bedrock is exposed in most of the mountain area, while considerable deposits of till and glacio-fluvial sediments occur in the valleys.

  • Royal Ideology in Fagrskinna
Háskóli Íslands Íslensku- og Menningardeild Medieval Icelandic Studies Royal Ideology in Fagrskinna A Case Study of Magnús inn blindi. Ritgerð til M.A.-prófs Joshua Wright Kt.: 270194-3629 Leiðbeinandi: Sverrir Jakobsson May 2018 Acknowledgements I owe thanks to too many people to list, but I would be remiss if I did not mention Julian Valle, who encouraged and advised me throughout the process, and Jaka Cuk for his company and council at numerous late night meetings. Dr. Sverrir Jakobsson’s supervision and help from Dr. Torfi H. Tulinius were both indispensable help throughout the process. I owe my wife, Simone, a special thanks for her input, and an apology for keeping her up in our small room as I worked at strange hours. I cannot fully express my debt to my father, David Wright, and my uncle Harold Lambdin, whose urging and encouragement pushed me to try academia in the first place. I dedicate this to my mother, Susanne, who would have loved to see it. ii Abstract: When looking at the political thought of the kings’ sagas, scholarship has overwhelmingly focused on Heimskringla, widely regarded as the most well-written compilation, or on the older Morkinskinna because it is more proximal to the ‘original’ sources. An intermediate source, Fagrskinna, is almost always overlooked, mentioned only in passing by scholars that are more interested in other texts. The limited work that has been done on this source, most prominently by Gustav Indrebø, attracts little attention and Indrebø has remained mostly unchallenged nearly a century after his writing. While there have been systemic analyses of the ideology of these sagas (by Bagge and Ármann Jakobsson, among others) they are only tangentially interested in Fagrskinna, with the result that this work and its unique ideology have been largely unexplored, although its subject matter predisposes it towards contributing to the discussion.

His reign was marked by aggressive military campaigns and conquest, particularly in the Norse-dominated parts of the British Isles, where he extended his rule to the Kingdom of the Isles and Dublin. His daughter, Ragnhild, was born in 1090. As the only son of King Olaf Kyrre, Magnus was proclaimed king in southeastern Norway shortly after his father's death in 1093. In the north, his claim was contested by his cousin, Haakon Magnusson (son of King Magnus Haraldsson), and the two co-ruled uneasily until Haakon's death in 1095.

Her følger mitt livs største arbeid.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract : More than 1100 complete or fragmentary imported vessels in bronze, glass, wood, horn, clay and silver from the first millennium A.D. have been found in Norway, approximately 80% of them in graves. The extensive research already carried out has produced a vast body of literature, which generally keeps within strict chronological boundaries, concentrating on vessels from either the Roman Period, the Migration Period, or the Viking Age. Two main approaches to the material have traditionally been applied: 1) typo logical studies, on the basis of which trade connections and systems have been discussed from different theoretical perspectives, and 2) imports as status markers, from which hierarchical social systems of a general kind have been inferred. Only very rarely have their function as vessels attracted any serious consideration, and even more rarely their actual local context.
