Message from the Director

The Office of Industry and Community Engagement is responsible for developing and leading Charles Sturt’s engagement and collaboration with industry and the community across the University’s footprint. Formed in 2019, the portfolio combines existing areas of external engagement such as the Regional Archives, the University Art Collection, the incubator network, and the new external engagement roles.

The University has a critical role in building strong, vibrant regional communities with intellectual capital, social capital and infrastructure. Community Engagement is one of three pillars of the University Strategy, which aims to reinforce Charles Sturt as an anchor institution in its communities and be an agent of change through impactful, solution driven research.

Charles Sturt is a community minded organisation with strong links to industry, government and other educational organisations. Our work is guided by the Carnegie Foundation definition of community engagement as the collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities for the mutually beneficial creation and exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity.

To this effect, the new Directors of External Engagement are responsible for building, maintaining and growing strong relationships between the University and its various community sectors.

Support from our communities has been fantastic, as evidenced in the 2019 ‘Community Sentiment’ and ‘Your Voice’ surveys. The biggest improvement (by 16%) from the 2017 Your Voice survey in all categories was that community engagement is supported at Charles Sturt and community engagement by colleagues is high quality.

Looking forward to working with such a dedicated team and to a very busy 2020.

Associate Professor Laura Dan Director | Industry & Community Engagement

Arts & Archives

The Regional Archives and University Art Collection (Arts and Archives) is a combined-function repository located off-campus in the city of Wagga Wagga.

Collecting archival material from the Riverina and Murray regions since 1973, the Archive Collection now extends to over 5,000 linear metres. The Art Collection has been professionally curated since 1996, bringing together a quality collection of twentieth century Australian artworks from the University's many precursor institutions. Much of the Art Collection is currently on display throughout the University's campuses.

2019 Update

2019 has been an important year of growth and consolidation for both the Regional Archives & the University Art Collection.

A large amount of planning and preparatory work was focussed on updating and implementing the collection management software platforms utilised by the Archives & Art Collection.

Staff successfully completed very laborious projects associated with repository management and consolidation including the wrapping and storage of a large amount of artwork, and moving in excess of 10,000 archives boxes to maximise shelf space.

These major undertakings were accomplished whilst continuing to deliver presentations and seminars to internal and external stakeholders, undertaking research enquiries and providing assistance to users interested in accessing both collections.

The groundwork laid by these initiatives will places the Regional Archives & Art Collection in an excellent position moving forward, enabling both units to continue enhancing the services we offer, whilst engaging with the University, our staff and students, and our regional communities into the future.

Carnegie Community Engagement Classification

Charles Sturt is co-leading (with University of Technology Sydney) an Australian Pilot of the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification (Carnegie). Carnegie is the US gold standard for University- Community Engagement and forms a key element of Charles Sturt’s ‘Our Communities’ University Strategy component. The ten Australian Carnegie Pilot Group institutions use the Pilot as a self-study by aligning existing activities to Carnegie best-practice. This process guides the development of an Australian-specific Carnegie classification, which will be extended to all Australian universities in 2020.

The Office of Industry and Community Engagement gathered information to inform our Carnegie Pilot self-study throughout 2019. This process included consultation with many areas within the University to understand the extent that we engage with community, industry and government in teaching, research and scholarship for mutual benefit. A key learning is that Charles Sturt generally engages well with our communities (e.g. courses co-created with industry, understanding community requirements via Regional Consultative Committees), but improvements can be made (e.g. need better mechanisms to define and measure quality of community engagement).

Carnegie is an ongoing process and an essential tool to understand how best-practice can be applied at Charles Sturt. The Pilot self-study and feedback from Carnegie assessors will inform where changes to Charles Sturt systems and processes can provide further benefit for both the University and our communities.

The Carnegie Pilot submission is due in May 2020, with site visits to be scheduled for later in the year.

Charles Sturt’s innovation hubs support regional entrepreneurship, small- to medium-sized enterprises and a networked innovation ecosystem in the Central West and southern regions of NSW through establishing work spaces to promote innovation.

Update from Innovation Hubs

Since the first Innovation Hubs were launched at Charles Sturt in 2017, engagement between the University and regional innovators and entrepreneurs has grown. Thanks to the financial support of the NSW Government’s Boosting Business Innovation Program, Charles Sturt developed three innovation hubs:  CenWest Innovate in Bathurst, supports established Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs)  The AgriTech Incubator (ATI) in Wagga, supports start-up businesses  Walan Mayinygu Indigenous entrepreneurship pop-up hub supports Indigenous entrepreneurs in local towns across NSW.

In addition to these programs, Charles Sturt partners with other local innovation providers across our footprint through:

 Partnership in North East Victoria for ‘Start-Up Shake Up’ to train and support the local innovation community, with Charles Sturt’s Wangaratta Study Centre providing an Organisational Entrepreneurship Program.  Provision of space on Dubbo campus for ‘The Exchange’ to operate co-working space for local start- up businesses.  Partnership with ‘Upstairs’ in Bathurst who provide a culture and community of like-minded innovative thinkers, working together, to develop ideas into reality.  A developing partnership with Port Macquarie Hasting Council to create an innovation hub within the next stage of campus development, set to open in 2021.  Contribution to the development of the Wodonga Innovation Project led by Wodonga Council.

We are proud of how the businesses we work with develop and contribute to building a bigger and stronger region.

Update from the Director of External Engagement

As the Director of External Engagement for Albury-Wodonga and Wagga Wagga I am thrilled to be able to foster relationships and facilitate networks and partnerships for our University.

Since my commencement in August 2019, I have been invigorated by the truly amazing people at the University and what we have to offer our communities. We have seen record numbers attending our Exploration Series in Albury-Wodonga, supported people through our CUP Grants and even had a ‘Sconversation’ with the Country Women’s Association in Wagga Wagga.

“I am passionate about rural and regional Australia and appreciate the values that Charles Sturt displays in developing communities by creating confidence and collaboration with industry through intellectual capital”

The projected growth in the regions of Albury-Wodonga and Wagga Wagga is explosive. We are seeing a vast amount of large projects and funding for our regions that is generating excitement in these areas. The University has a big role to play in the region and there are many opportunities to explore and participate. As an anchor institute in our regions, I will endeavour to support and build our communities into vibrant and flourishing areas.

I look forward to taking Charles Sturt to our broader regions and showcasing what we do, but most importantly, making these regions feel like Charles Sturt is their University and that we will continue to build the profile and opportunities for rural Australia.

Bathurst & Orange Campus Highlights

Update from the Director of External Engagement

It is a great privilege to work with a University that truly understands the power and value of authentic community engagement.

Over the past six months, we have made great strides in connecting with the Bathurst and Orange communities, and are looking forward to extending those connections to surrounding communities such as Oberon, Lithgow, Canowindra, Molong, Forbes, Parkes and Cowra in 2020.

“I am incredibly excited to help strengthen and expand Charles Sturts relationships, projects and engagement with our regional communities”

We will do this by extending our Community-University Partnership (CUP) Grants program, extending our free public talks on issues that matter to our communities, through our Regional Consultative Committee of local leaders, and through travelling and listening to our communities, connecting with businesses, Councils, community groups and students and nurturing great ideas into projects and partnerships.

By leveraging the skills base, knowledge and good will of Charles Sturt University, our regional communities can benefit in many ways, just as the University can benefit from tapping into opportunities in the community.

Dubbo Campus Highlights

2019 has been a busy year for the Dubbo Campus, having hosted three impressive art exhibitions in the renovated space in Building 901, with opening events for each exhibition held in collaboration with local artists.

The campus was incredibly fortunate to display a section of pieces by renowned Indigenous photographer, Mervyn Bishop, which were showcased to Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AO QC, Governor of New South Wales when she visited Dubbo in July.

Our strong partnership with ‘The Exchange’ innovation hub has fostered increasing community activity on campus, with more than 60 business development workshops and events hosted on-site this year by the ever- expanding business hub.

The exposure of campus facilities to the community led to a partnership with the Dubbo Chamber of Commerce and Industry which saw Charles Sturt host the August industry breakfast on Dubbo campus. This growing partnership will lead to further collaborative events between the University and the Dubbo Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 2020.

Port Macquarie Campus

Update from the Director of External Engagement

Charles Sturt continues to demonstrate its commitment and genuine desire to see our regional communities grow and thrive through strong, lasting connections. It is a great honour to continue the wonderful work of the university in our community utilising the last six months as an opportunity to further strengthen and build on the intrinsic connections between Charles Sturt and key stakeholders within its vibrant Port Macquarie - Hastings community.

These connections have seen the negotiation and formation of new partnerships that position Charles Sturt as a thought leader in education and professional development. This includes the 2020 state-wide NSW Department of Education STEM Secondary Teachers’ Conference, where Charles Sturt is a major partner, hosting the event simultaneously on multiple campuses.

Strategically we have built industry, academic and community connections through curating and facilitating industry panels that increase understanding, engagement and research opportunities for both industry and the university. This has led to projects such as the Collaborative Koala Research Project, the Early Researchers Industry Forum and the Illuminate Young Entrepreneur Industry Panel, all of which created real-world impact and commercial opportunities.

The recent bushfire crisis saw Charles Sturt rightfully own its place as an anchor institution within the extended mid-north coast region providing over 700 firefighters from across the country with a base to sleep, eat and recover as they defended surrounding areas from the catastrophic fire threat. The university was a central place for community to come together in this time of distress and unrest.

I look forward to building on this year’s growth in engagement, continuing to grow lasting connections and partnerships with our communities in 2020 and beyond.

Ms Kate Wood-Foye Director of External Engagement (Port Macquarie)

“The introduction of the Direct or of External Engagement role at the university has been greatly welcomed by the St Columba faculty, board and school community. Since Kate has taken on her position with Charles Sturt, St Columba has found that communication and collaboration between the two learning organisations has increased exponentially and reached a level that invites opportunities to work together for the betterment of the community. Kate is receptive to new ideas and opportunities, understands local culture and concerns and is very good to work with. We look forward to working further Kate and the University to enhance education in this growing region.”
