DEATHS

At Stranraer, in the [blank] year of his age, Alexander M’Ghee, for some time parochial schoolmaster of Leswalt. Mr M’Ghee’s life exhibited many of the changes which every one is so subject to. He was for many years a highly successful parochial schoolmaster, and during that time many – indeed, nearly the whole of the present farmers of the parish of Leswalt – received from him their education. He was, in fact, so celebrated as a teacher, that many scholars from England, and even from foreign parts, boarded with him. Unfortunately, however, from his being greatly in request as an entertaining companion, he acquired a passion for intoxicating liquors; and to supply funds for gratifying that passion, he rendered himself amenable to the laws of his country. He, being detected, was dismissed from his office. Since that time he has been nearly or altogether supported by the liberality of those who had not forgotten him in his fallen position. At Stockton, near Dewittville, in the United States, on the 7th August last, Mr Anthony Broadfoot, aged 72 years. Mr Broadfoot was born in the parish of Penninghame, became tenant of Kirkmabreck, in Ardwell estate, was reckoned an enterprising farmer, took an interest in public matters connected with Church and State, and being characterised by frank manners and kindly disposition, was a man beloved by all who knew him. About 20 years ago, Mr Broadfoot, together with his brother James and their maiden sister, emigrated to America, and after a short time, purchased a farm, and went on improving it till his death. The letter announcing his death intimates that he had enjoyed good health till two weeks before the solemn event took place, and that he bore his last sufferings with calm resignation to the will of Heaven. At English Square, Dundyvan, on the 1st inst., Janet M’Culloch, relict of Mr Anthony M’Meikan, formerly of Stranraer, in her 92d year. On the 25th ult., at Bonnington Bank, Edinburgh, R.
