As 2017 Aurora Prize Laureate, Dr. Tom Catena put forward Catholic Medical Mission Board, for which he has been volunteering for more than 20 years, as one of financial beneficiaries of Aurora Prize. Dr. Catena exemplifies the selflessness and commitment to others that are the hallmarks of CMMB’s volunteer program. To inspire and provide opportunities for others to follow in his path and take up the call of “service to others”, CMMB supported the recruitment, placement and maintenance of 12 individuals who committed to long-term volunteer service in rural areas of Kenya, Sudan and South Sudan, where severe armed conflicts and shortage of medical and health professionals are a common occurrence. These highly skilled clinical and non-clinical professionals are known and identified as Aurora Fellows.

Malaysian Medical Relief (MERCY Malaysia)

MALAYSIA

It all began in 1999, amidst a raging war in Kosovo where thousands of lives were lost and suffering was widespread. Moved by the plight of countless innocent civilians, especially women and children, Dr. Jemilah Mahmood, a Malaysian obstetrician-gynaecologist, sought to offer her services voluntarily. Finding no national organisation ready to support such international crises, together with a handful of like-minded friends, the Malaysian Medical Relief Society – better known today as MERCY Malaysia – was established. MERCY Malaysia is focusing on providing medical relief, sustainable health related development and risk reduction activities for vulnerable communities in both crisis and non-crisissituations.
