“One Raw Material in the Racial Laboratory:” Chinese, Filipino, and Japanese Students and West Coast Civil Rights, 1915-1968 ABSTRACT Title of Document: “ONE RAW MATERIAL IN THE RACIAL LABORATORY:” CHINESE, FILIPINO, AND JAPANESE STUDENTS AND WEST COAST CIVIL RIGHTS, 1915-1968. Stephanie Hinnershitz, Doctor of Philosophy, 2013 Directed By: Professor Julie Greene History Department Between 1915 and 1968, Chinese, Filipino, and Japanese students studying at colleges and universities along the West Coast in the United States created, organized, and led influential civil rights groups. Although these students were only “temporary” visitors to the U.S., they became deeply involved in protesting the racism and discrimination that characterized life for Asian immigrants, Asian Americans, and other minorities in California and Washington. With the assistance of larger organizations such as the Young Men’s and Young Women’s Christian Associations and the World Student Christian Federation, these foreign students formed their own campus groups during the1920s and 1930s that allowed them to build relationships with each other as well as students from other racial and ethnic backgrounds. The discrimination and segregation that visiting students from Asia faced in cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle also prompted them to consider their roles in promoting justice for racial minorities while in the U.S. By leading and participating in petition campaigns, national youth conventions, and labor organizations, students from China, Japan, and the Philippines worked together to build an activist network with African American, Asian American, white, and other foreign students devoted to ending racial discrimination and promoting civil rights and liberties for all in the U.S. Considering the continuity in ideas, ethnic and racial composition, and leadership between pre and post-World War II equality activist groups, I argue that Chinese, Filipino, and Japanese students were key players in the creation of a West Coast civil rights movement that began during the interwar period. Galace Last April 23, the French people cast their ballots in the first round of France’s elections in what is considered one of its most consequential presidential races in recent memory. Emmanuel Macron, an independent candidate, came out on top with 24 percent of the vote, followed by Marine Le Pen from the far-right National Front who finished with 21 percent. The two are set to square off in the runoff on May 7 to determine the ultimate winner. The result was considered a rebuke by French voters of the country’s two establishment political parties—the Socialists on the left and the Republicans on the right—who had traditionally held power over France throughout the past half century. More than just deciding who will be France’s next leader, however, this election is also considered a referendum on the European Union (EU). The far-right candidate Le Pen is vociferously opposed to the EU and has promised to pull France out of the regional bloc. Her opponent, Macron, holds the opposite view, strongly favoring greater regional integration for France into Europe. So why should Filipinos care about the French Presidential Election? The outcome of this election will not only determine who will be the next president of France, it could also decide the fate of the EU, and by extension, the global economy at large. En Marche! (Forward!) Emmanuel Macron, a 39-year old investment banker with no experience in elected office and who is married to his high school teacher, is the overwhelming favorite to capture the presidency in the runoff.

Because American missionary schools played an important role in the region, notions of female gentility were greatly influenced by the cultural values of the American middle class and, more specifically, American liberal arts colleges. The notion of the “new gentlewoman” helps to illuminate modern Protestant womanhood’s ambiguous relationship with feminism and nationalism. Recognizing that the Protestant notion of “female gentility” was internally racialized, in this study, I also pay attention to the question of race. While the scope of my research spans East Asia, in this paper, I examine Christian education in China, focusing specifically on Yenching Women’s College. I compare the college’s educational goals and curricula to the pedagogy at the male college of Yenching, the governmental women’s college, and other female colleges in Japan and Korea. In this study, I approach East Asia as a whole for several reasons: first, because a broader view of the region helps put the Chinese case into perspective; second, because the region was often dealt with together in missionary work; and lastly, because national differences cannot be assumed to be more substantial than other differences, such as those based on gender, class, generation, period, and province.

Filipino Alaskeros first appeared in the canneries around 1911. In the 1920s as exclusionary immigration laws went into effect, they replaced the Japanese, who had replaced the Chinese in the canneries. Workers were recruited through labor contractors who were paid to provide a work crew for the summer canning season. The contractor paid workers wages and other expenses. This system led to many abuses and harsh working conditions from which grew the movement toward unionization. The CWFLU, under the leadership of its first President, Virgil Duyungan, was chartered as Local 19257 by the American Federation of Labor in 1933. On December 1, 1936 an agent of a labor contractor murdered Duyungan and Secretary Aurelio Simon.

Abstract: The Christianity is transmitted with faster speed than ever in recent years in China. The Christianity transmission in China has long history and many setbacks, especially in modern history of China. The missionaries tried different ways to propagate such religion and had little achievement, even such transmission incurred the slaughter. But after the reforming and opening policy, the Christianity is accepted more easily in China. The main form of the Christianity church is the house church, and the believers in the countryside accounts for the most part of the whole believers. There is increasing interest in the house church and Christianity in countryside, and those are also the key to understand the Christianity transmission in contemporary China. Introduction In the end of 19th century, the American missionary Arthur Henderson Smith published his Chinese Characteristics and believed that thespread of Christianity in Chinese countryside would bring about a series of positive changes in Chinese countryside. After 100 years, the spread of Christianity were fast and very popular. In the population of the Chinese Christians, 80% are in the Chinese countryside. The most common form of the church is the housechurch, which is not registered in the government so that the government can not supervise it effectively.
