Analysi of Dream of the Red Chamber
MULTIPLE AUTHORS DETECTION: A QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF DREAM OF THE RED CHAMBER XIANFENG HU, YANG WANG, AND QIANG WU A bs t r a c t . Inspired by the authorship controversy of Dream of the Red Chamber and the applica- tion of machine learning in the study of literary stylometry, we develop a rigorous new method for the mathematical analysis of authorship by testing for a so-called chrono-divide in writing styles. Our method incorporates some of the latest advances in the study of authorship attribution, par- ticularly techniques from support vector machines. By introducing the notion of relative frequency as a feature ranking metric our method proves to be highly e↵ective and robust. Applying our method to the Cheng-Gao version of Dream of the Red Chamber has led to con- vincing if not irrefutable evidence that the first 80 chapters and the last 40 chapters of the book were written by two di↵erent authors. Furthermore, our analysis has unexpectedly provided strong support to the hypothesis that Chapter 67 was not the work of Cao Xueqin either. We have also tested our method to the other three Great Classical Novels in Chinese. As expected no chrono-divides have been found. This provides further evidence of the robustness of our method. 1. In t r o du c t ion Dream of the Red Chamber (˘¢â) by Cao Xueqin (˘»é) is one of China’s Four Great Classical Novels. For more than one and a half centuries it has been widely acknowledged as the greatest literary masterpiece ever written in the history of Chinese literature. -

“A Preliminary Discussion of Literary Reform” by Hu Shi
Primary Source Document with Questions (DBQs) “ A PRELIMINARY DISCUSSION OF LITERARY REFORM” By Hu Shi Introduction Beginning around 1917, Chinese intellectuals began to engage each other in serious discussion and debate on culture, history, philosophy, and related subjects — all with an eye to the bigger problem of China’s weakness and the possible solutions to that problem. This period of intellectual debate, labeled the May Fourth Movement, lasted to around 1921. Hu Shi (1891-1962) was one of the leading May Fourth intellectuals. A student of agriculture at Cornell University, and then of philosophy under John Dewey at Columbia University, Hu led the way in the movement to write Chinese in the vernacular, as opposed to the elegant, but (to the average Chinese) incomprehensible classical style. Hu also played a leading role in the cultural debates of the time. The following document represents Hu’s ideas on literary reform. Abstract This paper focuses on the use of the term “moderate” “moderacy” as a term applied to categorize some Chinese intellectuals and categorize their political positions throughout the 1920’s and 30’s. In the early decades of the twentieth century, the label of “moderate” (温和 or 温和派)became associated with an inability to align with a political or intellectual faction, thus preventing progress for either side or in some cases, advocating against certain forms of progress. Hu Shih, however, who was one of the most influential intellectuals in modern Chinese history, proudly advocated for pragmatic moderation, as suggested by his slogan: “Boldness is suggesting hypotheses coupled with a most solicitous regard for control and verification.” His advocacy of moderation—which for him became closely associated with pragmatism—brought criticism from those on the left and right. This paper seeks to address these analytical assessments of Hu Shih by questioning not just the labeling of Hu Shih as a moderate, but also questioning the negative connotations attached to moderacy as a political and intellectual label itself. -

HONG LOU MENG IN JORGE LUIS BORGES’S NARRATIVE Haiqing Sun Debo a la conjunción de un espejo y de una enciclopedia el descubrimiento […] Jorge Luis Borges ao Xueqin’s Hong Lou Meng (Dream of the Red Chamber) represents the highest achievement of the classical narra- C tive during the Ming-Qing period of China.1 Studies of the text have long become an important subject for scholars worldwide. In 1937, Jorge Luis Borges dedicates one of his es- says on world literature to Hong Lou Meng, which displays a curious observation of this masterpiece.2 Based on German scholar Franz Kuhn’s translation, Borges presents the Chinese novel as “[…] la novela más famosa de una literatura casi tres veces milenaria […] Abunda lo fantástico” (4: 329). Woodcut Illustrated Books in Late Imperial China: Visualisations of A Dream of Read Mansions Kristína Janotová Lately, studies on the relationship between images and texts have increased exponentially. The reputation of book illustration as a minor art is rapidly being dissipated and images are being accepted as valuable material objects and epistemological cultural artefacts. Their research is extremely important for the evaluation of both images and texts. Therefore, the interaction between visual and textual images, their reception and interpretation have become topics in their own right. The connection between the art of the book and the method used for its printing has been close in all cultures in the world. The movable metal type in Europe, invented by the German Johannes Gutenberg around 1450, was cheap enough to replace woodblock printing for the reproduction of European texts. Book illustrations, however, were still produced through the woodblock printing method, which remained a major way to produce images in early modern European illustrated works. 1 While acknowledging the generally accepted originality of Gutenberg’s invention,2 the appearance of Chinese book illustra- tions, printed textiles and playing cards must have had a great impact on it. Since Chinese culture was regarded as a superior culture, Europeans borrowed some of its elements, at least until the end of the eighteenth century. For example, at the end of the 17th century, Louis XIV (1638–1715) and the Kangxi 康熙 Emperor 1 Donald F. MYSTICAL SYMBOLISM AND DIALETHEIST COGNITIVISM: THE TRANSFORMATION OF TRUTH- FALSEHOOD (ZHEN-JIA) John Zijiang Ding Abstract: One of the central philosophical issues is the problem of Truth-Falsehood (Zhen-Jia) in A Dream of Red Mansions. We may find three positions in this book: The first is “Truth” (Zhen) which also means “Being,” “Reality,” “Existence,” “Physical and Materialistic Substance,” and “Actual Social affairs”; the second is “Falsehood” (Jia) which means “Non-Being,” “Emptiness,” “Nothingness,” “Nihility,” “Illusory Fiction,” and “Spiritual and Mental Activities;” and the third is “Truth-Falsehood” (Zhen-Jia). The third can be considered “Transformation of Truth and Falsehood,” which has the following four attributes in this book: 1) Unification of truth and falsehood; 2) Interrelation of truth and falsehood; 3) Interaction of truth and falsehood; 4) Inter-substitution of truth and falsehood. The transformation of Truth-Falsehood (Zhen-Jia) in this book can be considered a sort of spiritual transformation which is recognized within the context of an individual self-consciousness, or an individual's meaning system, especially in relation to the concepts of the sacred or ultimate concern. In this article, the author will discuss this theme by explaining and examining the relationship and transformation of “Truth” and “falsehood” through the following three perspectives: traditional Chinese glyphomancy, dialetheism and fatalism. A Dream of Red Mansions――HONG LOU MENG 紅樓夢 is one of the four greatest Chinese classic novels. 1 It may be proper to justify that to understand China, one must read this great work because of its tremendous influence on Chinese literary history. Importantly, the study of this novel has become as popular and prolific as the works of Shakespeare or Goethe. -

Degree awarded June 2016 ii © 2016 Qing Ye iii DISSERTATION ABSTRACT Qing Ye Doctor of Philosophy Department of East Asian Languages and Literature June 2016 Title: Reading Bodies: Aesthetic, Gender, and Family in the Eighteenth Century Chinese Novel Guwangyan (Preposterous Words) This dissertation focuses on the Mid-Qing novel Guwangyan (Preposterous Words, preface dated, 1730s) which is a newly discovered novel with lots of graphic sexual descriptions. Guwangyan was composed between the publication of Jin Ping Mei (The Plum in the Golden Vase, 1617) and Honglou meng (Dream of the Red Chamber, 1791). These two masterpieces represent sexuality and desire by presenting domestic life in polygamous households within a larger social landscape. This dissertation explores the factors that shifted the literary discourse from the pornographic description of sexuality in Jin Ping Mei, to the representation of chaste love in Honglou meng.
