Dear fellow parishioners of Our Lady of Perpetual Help,

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I hope you and your family are having a joyful time during this season. I am writing this letter to update you on my ministry. So for this year, as you may or may not know, I am on a discipleship team in Richardson, Texas for the year. I am at a parish called St. Joseph which has a parish and school. The parish I am at is massive; it has over 6,000 families coming from all over the world including Vietnam, Africa, and Central America. The parish has 7 masses every weekend so my ministry was off to a very quick start. The moment we arrived at the parish, we attended all the masses to introduce ourselves. I have been very blessed to be on a great team of three other men and four women ranging from the ages of 18-25. My team comes from all across the United States and even a girl from Ireland. I am very grateful for all the ways my team has helped me grow, especially the knowledge of how to love others more fully and intentionally. I am also grateful for how crazy my team is as it makes for no dull ministry moments. Our team works with a variety of different activities and events at the parish. We mainly focus on the youth. We help with small groups during faith formation classes, open youth room (which is a time for the team and teens to hangout and get to know each other). Also, we have a young adult night called the rooftop which takes place once a month, and various events hosted by the parish. One of the random events we were fortunate to help out with was an alter server fun night, which consisted of a game called “whirlyball” (which is a combination of bumper cars, basketball and lacrosse) and laser tag followed by praise and worship and adoration. It was an awesome experience to see a group of about 30 high school boys so enthusiastic and on fire for the faith. In our modern culture it is rare to see young that have a desire to serve the lord. Another great experience I had was being able to give a talk on prayer for the parish faith formation class which is a group of middle schoolers preparing to receive the sacrament of confirmation. I talked about how easy prayer can be and how necessary it is for us to pray. It is very common not to see the fruit of your ministry which can be hard at moments, but I was very fortunate to be able to see the fruits of the talk. About two weeks after my talk after attending one of the many masses on Sunday, a woman approached and told me she was a mother of a girl who was in faith formation. Her daughter was very moved by my talk and now had a new perspective on prayer and a new desire to pray. It was a really awesome experience to be able to see something actually come of ministry. As a missionary, I’m asked to raise a minimum of $6,000 to offset some of the costs of my training, travel and health insurance. Thanks to many generous donors, I am over 80% of my funding goal. I want to meet this obligation so that NET can continue to do this amazing work! If you would be willing to help, I would be most grateful. Please send your tax-deductible gifts to NET Ministries, 110 Crusader Avenue, West Saint Paul, MN 55118-4427 or go online to www.netusa.org/donate. Please make checks payable to NET Ministries and indicate that the donation is for Santiago Stewart . I am very grateful for the support I’ve received from the parishioners of Our Lady of Perpetual Help . Please continue to keep me in your prayers and know that you remain in mine.

God bless, Santiago Stewart

Page 3 www.olphaz.org/parish Discipleship Weekly ALL ABOUT NET MINISTRIES NET Ministries challenges young Catholics to love Christ and embrace the life of the Church. Every August, 175 young Catholics aged 18-28 leave behind their jobs, school, family, and friends to devote nine months to serving with the National Evangelization Teams (NET). Divided into 16 teams, they travel across the U.S. for nine months to share the Gospel with young people and their families. Since 1981, NET teams have led over 34,000 retreats and ministered to more than 2.1 million young Catholics. NET Ministries fulfills its mission by: • Proclaiming the Gospel of Christ through a personal witness of faith • Inviting young people to live for Christ • Forming young people in Christian character through the study and practice of their faith • Equipping youth workers and young adults with the ministry skills needed for evangelization NET Ministries is under the ecclesiastical vigilance of the Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. NET is a nonprofit organization incorporated in the State of Minnesota funded through individual donations, program fees and grants and is governed by a national board of directors. The work of the NET teams is the primary ac- tivity of NET Ministries. Each year approximately 175 young adults ages 18-28 volunteer nine months of their lives to serve on the NET teams. These young adults are placed on 16 different teams of 8-12 people. For nine months, these teams become like family for each other as they work side by side sharing what God has done in their lives. For countless youth across the country this message of God’s love and power is brought to them in a personal way. Teammate relationships will be among the deepest, most challenging and most rewarding relation- ships a young adult will ever have. They will laugh, cry, and struggle alongside one another. Through it all they’ll grow together. They will learn what it means to truly love and to truly be loved. Most often, it is not the ministry skills that the young people notice on a NET retreat, but the love that the team members have for one another.

Two types of ministry teams are currently being trained and sent out, Retreat Teams and Discipleship Teams. NET Ministries currently has 11 retreat teams composed of 10 to 12 members who facilitate retreats six days a week for youth in junior high and high school. Each team travels to specific dioceses and spends time serving the individual parishes there. In an average 9 month NET season, each retreat team will: • Travel 20,000 miles • Serve 7 to 8 dioceses • Facilitate nearly 150 retreats • Stay in 125 host homes • Reach 8,500 young people one-on-one with the Gospel With such a busy ministry schedule, a retreat team member’s van is their home sweet home and one of the best places to hang out and recharge with their teammates. The ministry of each team is focused on retreats which can span 4 hours to 3 days. Large group talks, skits and dramas, small group discussions, and time for individual prayer are all components of each retreat. Throughout the entire retreat, the youth are extended the invitation to embrace their faith and cultivate a personal relationship with Christ. Learn how to bring a NET team to your parish.

Five of NET’s 16 ministry teams are Discipleship Teams. These teams serve in one specific parish or school for their entire NET year. While in the area they help facilitate the youth ministry or campus ministry pro- gram including things such as: High School Youth Group, Junior High Ministry, Discipleship Groups, Young Adult/Core Team Ministry, Teen Mass and Retreats for Parish Youth

In addition, teams will reach out to teens who are not actively involved in parish life by going to local teen events/sporting events, eating lunch with youth at school and or popular hangout spots, and simply being a light to the community. While in a parish or school, the teams stay with host families in the community for extended amounts of time which provides the chance to enter into family life and minister to the families as well. Discipleship Team ministry is focused on long term evangelization and building relationships that will grow throughout the year and beyond. The magi find the newborn king they seek, not in a palace but in a humble house in . Where do you find Christ’s light and love in the ordinary? Going Deeper to Understand the Gospel Epiphany

The magi in today’s gospel represent all The Magi paying homage those who are not part of the “in” crowd. to the Christ Child These foreigners who do not know Jesus come to worship him before anyone else. They recognize in the signs of nature that something significant has happened, and they seek it out. Those who should know their own Scriptures missed something that Zoroastrian priests observed. We can ask ourselves, too, what we might miss when signs are right in front of our eyes. What is God doing in our midst? Is it something that others - foreigners, those not part of the “in” crowd - notice, but it escapes our attention? Let us die to our preconceived notions and surety in knowing the Lord, and be open to what God has in store for us. God is doing something new. There is an epiphany under way. May we have eyes to see and ears to hear. Page 5 www.olphaz.org/parish Parish News

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish Liturgy Corner STEWARDSHIP SAINT FOR DECEMBER SAINT FABIOLA

Saint Fabiola is the patron saint of difficult marriages, divorced persons, abused spouses and victims of unfaithful spouses. She was a Christian, born in in the mid-4th century to a powerful and wealthy family. She was married off at a young age to an abusive and adulterous husband. Fabiola was able to secure a divorce from her husband under Roman Civil Law, and then she remarried, violating the ordinances of the Church. Shortly after her second marriage, both her ex-husband and her husband died. Upon the latter’s death, she appeared before the gates of Saint John Basilica, dressed in penitential garb and sought forgiveness for marrying outside the Church. She made such a great impression upon the that he received her formally again into full communion with the Church. Fabiola devoted her immense wealth to the needs of the poor and sick. She became a physician and practiced medicine, treating patients with illnesses other physicians would avoid. Fabiola co-founded what is known to be the first hospital in the Western World. She continued to work tirelessly to treat patients that no one else would treat. Fabiola died on December 27, 399 a. d. of natural causes. Her feast day is December 27th.
