I hope you and your family are having a joyful time during this season. I am writing this letter to update you on my ministry. So for this year, as you may or may not know, I am on a discipleship team in Richardson, Texas for the year. I am at a parish called St. Joseph which has a parish and school. The parish I am at is massive; it has over 6,000 families coming from all over the world including Vietnam, Africa, and Central America. The parish has 7 masses every weekend so my ministry was off to a very quick start. The moment we arrived at the parish, we attended all the masses to introduce ourselves. I have been very blessed to be on a great team of three other men and four women ranging from the ages of 18-25. My team comes from all across the United States and even a girl from Ireland. I am very grateful for all the ways my team has helped me grow, especially the knowledge of how to love others more fully and intentionally. I am also grateful for how crazy my team is as it makes for no dull ministry moments. Our team works with a variety of different activities and events at the parish. We mainly focus on the youth. We help with small groups during faith formation classes, open youth room (which is a time for the team and teens to hangout and get to know each other). Also, we have a young adult night called the rooftop which takes place once a month, and various events hosted by the parish. One of the random events we were fortunate to help out with was an alter server fun night, which consisted of a game called “whirlyball” (which is a combination of bumper cars, basketball and lacrosse) and laser tag followed by praise and worship and adoration. It was an awesome experience to see a group of about 30 high school boys so enthusiastic and on fire for the faith. In our modern culture it is rare to see young that have a desire to serve the lord. Another great experience I had was being able to give a talk on prayer for the parish faith formation class which is a group of middle schoolers preparing to receive the sacrament of confirmation. I talked about how easy prayer can be and how necessary it is for us to pray. It is very common not to see the fruit of your ministry which can be hard at moments, but I was very fortunate to be able to see the fruits of the talk. About two weeks after my talk after attending one of the many masses on Sunday, a woman approached and told me she was a mother of a girl who was in faith formation. Her daughter was very moved by my talk and now had a new perspective on prayer and a new desire to pray. It was a really awesome experience to be able to see something actually come of ministry. As a missionary, I’m asked to raise a minimum of $6,000 to offset some of the costs of my training, travel and health insurance. Thanks to many generous donors, I am over 80% of my funding goal. I want to meet this obligation so that NET can continue to do this amazing work! If you would be willing to help, I would be most grateful. Please send your tax-deductible gifts to NET Ministries, 110 Crusader Avenue, West Saint Paul, MN 55118-4427 or go online to www.netusa.org/donate. Please make checks payable to NET Ministries and indicate that the donation is for Santiago Stewart . I am very grateful for the support I’ve received from the parishioners of Our Lady of Perpetual Help . Please continue to keep me in your prayers and know that you remain in mine. Every August, 175 young Catholics aged 18-28 leave behind their jobs, school, family, and friends to devote nine months to serving with the National Evangelization Teams (NET). Divided into 16 teams, they travel across the U.S. for nine months to share the Gospel with young people and their families. Since 1981, NET teams have led over 34,000 retreats and ministered to more than 2.1 million young Catholics. NET Ministries fulfills its mission by: • Proclaiming the Gospel of Christ through a personal witness of faith • Inviting young people to live for Christ • Forming young people in Christian character through the study and practice of their faith • Equipping youth workers and young adults with the ministry skills needed for evangelization NET Ministries is under the ecclesiastical vigilance of the Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. NET is a nonprofit organization incorporated in the State of Minnesota funded through individual donations, program fees and grants and is governed by a national board of directors. The work of the NET teams is the primary ac- tivity of NET Ministries. Each year approximately 175 young adults ages 18-28 volunteer nine months of their lives to serve on the NET teams. These young adults are placed on 16 different teams of 8-12 people. For nine months, these teams become like family for each other as they work side by side sharing what God has done in their lives. For countless youth across the country this message of God’s love and power is brought to them in a personal way. Teammate relationships will be among the deepest, most challenging and most rewarding relation- ships a young adult will ever have. They will laugh, cry, and struggle alongside one another. Through it all they’ll grow together. They will learn what it means to truly love and to truly be loved. Most often, it is not the ministry skills that the young people notice on a NET retreat, but the love that the team members have for one another. Two types of ministry teams are currently being trained and sent out, Retreat Teams and Discipleship Teams. NET Ministries currently has 11 retreat teams composed of 10 to 12 members who facilitate retreats six days a week for youth in junior high and high school. Each team travels to specific dioceses and spends time serving the individual parishes there. In an average 9 month NET season, each retreat team will: • Travel 20,000 miles • Serve 7 to 8 dioceses • Facilitate nearly 150 retreats • Stay in 125 host homes • Reach 8,500 young people one-on-one with the Gospel With such a busy ministry schedule, a retreat team member’s van is their home sweet home and one of the best places to hang out and recharge with their teammates. The ministry of each team is focused on retreats which can span 4 hours to 3 days. Large group talks, skits and dramas, small group discussions, and time for individual prayer are all components of each retreat. Throughout the entire retreat, the youth are extended the invitation to embrace their faith and cultivate a personal relationship with Christ. Learn how to bring a NET team to your parish. Five of NET’s 16 ministry teams are Discipleship Teams. These teams serve in one specific parish or school for their entire NET year. While in the area they help facilitate the youth ministry or campus ministry pro- gram including things such as: High School Youth Group, Junior High Ministry, Discipleship Groups, Young Adult/Core Team Ministry, Teen Mass and Retreats for Parish Youth In addition, teams will reach out to teens who are not actively involved in parish life by going to local teen events/sporting events, eating lunch with youth at school and or popular hangout spots, and simply being a light to the community.
