It is time, after 11 years, to turn this legacy project over to another. MSgt Ernest Burns, HQ AMC/A3TK, at Scott AFB volunteered to take over the SIGNAL project starting with the 2011 edition. I arrived at this decision after much deliberation. I felt that even though I could have continued this project and potentially taken it with me into retirement, it has always been under the care of an Active Duty Boom Operator. Ernest will take this project into the future and with his fresh outlook I have no doubt that the SIGNAL will continue to grow and be a source of heritage for all Boom Operators. I appreciate all the positive support that I’ve received over the years during my tenure as Editor. With that being said… Welcome to the 2010 Edition of the BOOM SIGNAL! This is the 31st Anniversary Edition. Another year has flown by! I want to thank all the units that participated in this year’s Edition. As always, the goal is to have maximum participation in the SIGNAL. Congratulations to all Boom Operators who’ve competed and earned promotion since last year. Still waiting to see which manufacturer will provide us with the next refueling platform. The Center of Excellence has increased its fleet of static trainer aircraft with the addition of the KC- 135 Speckled Trout. (photos on page XX) The CoE continues expand its training prowess and is one-stop- shopping for Career Enlisted Aviator (CEA) training. The Boom Operator Weapon System Trainer unit #1 has completed burn-in period at Altus AFB. Unit #2 is installed and in testing. (photos on page XX) The contract for the AMC BOWST project has been awarded. These units are planned to be built and installed at our line units. The BOSS trainer for ANG units, is also in work. For those who aren’t familiar with the BOOM SIGNAL tradition, it’s a compilation of Unit inputs. It is the only one of its kind although several attempts have been made to copy it, without success. The intent of the BOOM SIGNAL is a communication link between each Boom Operator, past, present and future. It’s a historical document which started in 1979. I believe the BOOM SIGNAL goes hand-in-hand with the many traditions we uphold. As I’ve stated on more than one occasion; “Boom Operators are like one big family; no matter where you go; no matter whether you are Active, Retired, Guard or Reserve, you are always welcome and you always have something in common and you are family. I’d like to extend thanks to the following: CMSgt Dan Repp at HQ AMC, CMSgt James Boozer, Jr., at HQ AFRC, SMSgt Wayne Nelson at the ANG Bureau and other senior Boom Operators for assisting me in spreading the word for this year’s SIGNAL. Jim Reese & Steve Tuttle at Flight Safety, Altus AFB, for supporting the Class Rosters section. I finalized the project to recover and make available hard copies of all the SIGNAL’s for download on the website. Legacy and heritage is a large part of what being a Boom Operator is all about. I hope you enjoy the 2010 Edition of the BOOM SIGNAL.
