the freedoms of summer float away

The rush-routine haunts our being with schedules,

rules,

and the confusion of procedures. For nine months the rush of classes, study and grades

propels us onward

to question ourselves, our future, our hopes and goals -

the quest to accomplish.

Amidst the haste and boredom of routine to which we must succomb

we are all separate

and individual,

standing one to another in contrast.

3 4 With an optimistic outlook, 1970-71 began, promising a year different from the uncertain ties of school year 1969-70. Activities were restored giving students a wide range of ways in which to express themselves. Students with similiar ideas joined into numerous groups according to interests. Still some stu dents stood by themselves, seemingly apart from everyone else.

Changes appeared throughout the building, from new policies to new teachers to a new superintendent. Superintendent Saimon took a special interest in the school. He was often seen at school activities or talking to students for a moment or two in the hall. He displayed his athletic ability during the game against the Harlem Diplomats. At the NHS Banquet he conversed casually with students while sampling senior opinions.

This year witnessed increased experimenta tion in class teaching. Some faculty members searched for interesting ways to present mate rial and others probed for new methods. Biolo gy classes were run on a group lecture - indi vidual experimentation basis. In many classes a trend grew toward independent learning for the individual student. The IRO program has offered students an opportunity to gain prac tical experience in the field of their choice. Now more classes are adopting the idea of learning through experiencing. Classes like sociology appealed to the student to make him more aware of the relevant things in our ev eryday world.

Present school policies strongly contrasted with those of previous years. One change was the new library policy, put into effect at the beginning of the school year by the new librar ians. They limited use of the library to certain days according to study halls. Because of this action, students pushed for a return of the old library procedure and possibly a student lounge of some type. Out of this, talk-study hall grew into a realistic proposal which would offer students three alternatives for their free hours: quiet study, talk-study, or the library. Mr. Howard met with students in four class assemblies to discuss initiation of talk-study hall and reemphasized student responsibili ties. With the creation of talk-study hall, stu dents were allowed the freedom and responsi bility of choice. Last year a group of concerned parents unit ed together for the purpose of restoring activi ties cut by financial difficulties. This year the Booster Club continued to contribute money for this purpose by such fund-raising events as the Harlem Diplomat Game. With the mon ey Booster Club raised, it funded the All School Play and the Spring Musical. New uni forms were purchased this year for the Cheer leaders and for the newly formed Porn-Pon squad with Booster help. Booster Club helped to give Wego students the opportunity to display their talent through outside competitions. West Chicago took first place in the State Music Contest, for which Boosters paid participation expenses. Speech was another activity restored partly through Booster Club effort. Pat Fota became the first West Chicago student to progress through the district and sectional speech contests to the state finals.

Homecoming 1970 at We-Go High

Homecoming this year was one of the best in the history of our ,high school. It saw the return of many of the old traditions that were missing last year. The parade was the major readdi tion along with the marching band, Kittenetts, floats, and the cars carrying others involved in the festivities. This was the second year for the Bug Races, which went over so well last year. Again, there was competition between classes and then finally between the winning class and the faculty car. This was the second year in a row that the class of '72 came up victorious, much to their delight. Shortly -after the Bug Races were completed, the reinstated Homecoming Parade took place. There were a total of 20 en tries in the parade line-up.

14 First Place Senior Class Second Place Freshmen Class

Third Place Junior Class fourth Place Sophomore Class

There were six floats in the Homecoming parade this year. "We-Go is Sho-ln," from the nursery rhyme of the old woman Seniors won first place with their float slogan of "All The who lived in a shoe. Rhymes for Winning Times, C'mon Mothers Goose'Em, and This year the Juniors came up in third place with their float We'll Huff and Puff and Blow 'em Down." This is the second on the nursery rhyme of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Their year that the class of '71 has taken first place. float carried the slogan "Cats Stole Their Victory." This year the Freshmen came up with the second place float. Last but not least, the Sophomore class came in fourth place This is the first time in many years that we have had such an with their float on the nursery rhyme Snow White with the industrious Freshmen class. Their theme for their float was slogan "Who's the Toughest of Them All." 15 Festive Coro.nation and Dance

16 Homecoming 1970 in West Chicago saw the coronation of Pamela Dettmann as Queen and Edmund Thompson as King. Gracing the Queen's court were Terry Bowman, Margo Guer ra, Donna Hensel and Virginia Hoppe. The king was selected for his outstanding dorsal, the foot. Coronation took place on Wednesday of Homecoming week to allow the Queen's reign ing over all homecoming festivities. Set in the aura of Never, Never Land, the Homecoming Dance took place in the high school cafeteria. The dance was held from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Music for romance was provided by Gene Yates and His Orchestra. The group tried out a few jazz numbers but soon saw that the couples were more in favor of the slow, graceful dances. Presentation of the Queen and Court was at 10:00 p.m. Queen Pamela Dettmann was escorted by William Fawell. Terry Bowman was escorted by William Weyrauch, Margo Guerra was escorted by Keith Day, Donna Hensel was escort ed by Brad Westrom, and Virginia Hoppe was escorted by Gregory Buikema. Attending the Homecoming Dance this year were several couples of previously-graduated students. Registrars this year were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Netzel. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dettman, parents of the queen, were also in attendance. 17 Wildcats Victory of the Year

October 16, 1970 was the day of the great Wildcat Home coming victory. The fans were wild the entire eveining as our Cats and Kits battled away with the Trojans of Cary Grove. The first game of the evening handed our Kits a tough job in keeping the Trojans back. On offense Scott Dierking made some spectacular runs gaining a total of 70 yards and 2 T. D.'s to his long list of credits. Joseph Hitzemann made the 3rd T. D. for the Kits but for all their hard work our boys had to take the only tie of their Championship careers with a score of 18 to 18. The Varsity Cats had the best night of the season and they gave their fans something to cheer about as they defeated the Trojans with a score of 21 to 14. Randy Gibson had a terrific running night as he chalked up the yards against the Trojans. Ed Thompson also had a good night against the opposition; Ed carried the ball as Fullback. It was a cold night but the Wildcats were HOT.

18 19 Varsity Tried, But . . . The We-Go Wildcats had a difficult season this year, but · they showed great effort. With the new coaches, Mr. Unruh and Mr. Sterner, the team worked out constantly. The tri-cap tains, Steve Hensel, Mark Prutzman, and Ed Thompson helped to urge them on·at the practice sessions. Even though the team had great stamina, they couldn't get the points needed to win. The team's conference standing was two wins, five losses. They ended the season in sixth place, tied with Kaneland's Knights. Even though they only won two games, those two games showed that the team's spirit was still high and they had the ability to react fantastically when the pressure was applied to them. In the Batavia vs. West Chicago game, the Cats broke a school scoring record when they scored 60 points. The most exciting and rewarding game for both spectators and players was the Homecoming Game in which the Wildcats fought against undefeated Cary Grove. West Chicago rallied from a two touchdown deficit to a 21-14 victory. Bill Fawell was voted the most valuable on offense, Rick Mills received the most improved player award and most valu able on defense, and Ed Thompson was the most valuable overall.

We're Number One "We're number one," was the Frosh-Soph Football team's thing. And, wow, how Coach DeMay and the team did their thing. It just seemed impossible to put a stop to the Wildkits desire for a victory after victory. No doubt about it, Scott Dierking was out to show what he could do. No matter how hard the other team would try to get him down, he would hit back just a lit tle harder. Even though he weighed 175 pounds, he was light-footed and quick with his hands to intercept the ball. "Steal, that ball, and run, brother run." Scott's running was incredible to believe by both friend and foe. In the battle against Geneva, he really managed to astonish the crowds with his footwork by running 96 yatds for a T.D. Out of the 280 points for the season, Scott scored 204. Garry Schmitt made 20 points, Kevin Kaelin and Pete Dombrowski both scored 18 points, Joe Hitzemann, 14 points, and Ken Fry 6 points. But who was that 185 pounds 5'8" dark, handsome middle liner, blocking for the team? (Handsome?) That was Mike Guiliano, jersey number 51. Pud (nickname used by the team) was elected as "Mr. Defense." The Wildkits defense started out slowly, but improved to help the team to its undefeated season. Mike Guiliano lived up to the title as Mr. Defense with his outstand ing record of 41 tackles for the season. Dean Dier schow and Mark Clandorf both showed excellent skills as defensive players. Dean ended the season with 38 tackles and Mark with 34 tackles. The opponent was only allowed an average of 14.5 points per game, while the Wildkits averaged 35 points per game. Congratulations to the Frosh-Soph Conference Champs.

22 Conference Champs! The Wildcat's Cross Country team enjoyed a very good year as they ran to an 8-3 dual meet record; they were 6-0 in Conference dual meets. They finished first in the Fenton Invitational. Their finest performance of the season was in the Conference meet; they finished four runners in the top ten places. Captains of the varsity squad this year were seniors Rick Engstrom, Dan Bussie, Don Brady and Al Kowalewski. Rick Engstrom holds the team record of 14:54 over the 2.7 mile Reed Park course. Returning next year are varsity letter winners Mike Hanes, Joe Strock, Jim Madison, John Marcello and Fresh man Jeff Buikema.

23 International Laugh-In Did you ever wonder what Napolean had up his sleeve? Well, all secrets were told at this year's Language Night presen tation of an international Laugh-In, October 8. Skits, jokes, and even commercials were written by the performers, direc tors, and anyone interested in the show. French can-can girls danced across the stage bringing with them news of the past, present and future. The Frito Bandito snuck up on a giant hat, stealing fritos from under it. No show would be complete without commercials, but who ever heard of Latin Lay's Potato Chips, and Latin Winston Cigarettes? To top it all was a big German Rubber Duckie. Of course there was the joke wall, which ended in a rush for the cafeteria, where each language booth offered refreshments. The Latin booth filled cups of grape juice to go along with hard bread. The German booth offered delicious peach and apple kuchen. The Spanish booth had mexican wedding cookies, with sandria, a native drink. The French booth served cider with cream puffs, creme de menthe candies, petite foures. A Capella Choir Performs The A Capella Choir forfeited their lunch hour December 18 this year, to sing an hour and a half for all of the men and women on their lunch shifts at General Mills. It proved to be an exciting and rewarding experience. The Choir returned with light spirits and many b9xes of General Mills products. The Christmas Vespers Concert was performed by the Choir, its Madrigals and the Girls Glee Club on December 20, 1970. The Freshman Chorus and Orchestra had their own per formance on Tuesday, December 15. Other performances di rected by Mr. Benner, were: the Choir's annual presentation on Veteran's Day, when they sang the "Song of Democracy", their Winter Concert February 23, and their Spring Concert June 1. This year our high school was given the honor of having the State Music and Frosh-Soph Winter Concerts held at our school, in which all of our music students competed with over 20 other schools.

25 Vocational Training Interrelated Occupations is designed to prepare both boys and girls for entry into the vocational world, with the aid of classroom and on-the-job training. The student attends related classes in the morning and then goes to his job chosen from one of five areas of vocational training: business marketing and managing, health, industrial oriented, applied biological and agriculture, and personal and public service. The jobs range from chef-training at a local hotel to secretarial work. I.R.O. manages football concession stands and is a member of VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) and meets monthly for a social meeting. At the end of the year, the students attend a state conven tion of VICA in Springfield. Then the year is topped off by the annual Employers-Employee Banquet, given by the group members to honor their employers, officers, and outstanding members of I.R.O. At this time, an I.R.O. member-of-the-year is announced. Cooperative Training

C.W.T. is a cooperative work training program divided into two areas. The first is a work-related class in which the stu dent learns general skills and information needed in finding and keeping a good job. For the second part, the student is in volved in actual off-campus work experience in the communi ty. This involvement helps prepare the student to find gainful employment upon graduation. New this year is the first contracted training program at W .C.C.H.5. It is a cooperative cosmetology class, a two year program run in coordination with the Tricosis School of Cos metology in Elmhurst. This is designed for girls in their junio·r and senior years. The girls learn all aspects of cosmetology and are given the opportunity to practice these skills on customers. At the end of the senior year, a girl may become a licensed beauty operator.

Shoot Two, Big Team

The Varsity Basketball Team started slowly, losing quite a few close games the first half of the season. At the start of the second round, Aivars Baumanis was brought up to Varsity from the Sophomore Team. Aivars proved to be an advantage for the Wildcats. The Wildcats showed a steady i~provement, winning seven out of the last eleven games. Orval Jordan led the team in scoring with 505 points. 0. J. was again named to the first team - all-conference. Jeff Baker was elected to the second team - all-conference. The Sophomore Basketball T earn just couldn't seem to get going. They had a disappointing year winning four and losing nineteen. They finished last in the Little Seven Conference. High scorer for the Wildkits was Ken Fry with 216 points dur ing the season. High average per game was Aivars Baumanis with a 13.2 average. Leading rebounders were Aivars Baumanis and freshman Gregg Hoffman with 142 and 124 rebounds respectively .

29 Senior-Faculty Game 1971 In the battle between the senior "hicks" and the faculty "aristocrats", the latter came out ahead by a score of 95 to 67. The seniors' "spirits" were high, but the faculty got it all together and proved that their months of practice had not been in vain.

30 A Capella Choir Visits University of Illinois

The A Capella Choir of West Chicago Community High School was asked to attend a "Lecture Concert" at the Uni versity of Illinois' Krannert Center for the Fine Arts. It should be noted that our choir was the only high school choir to attend this concert. The A Capella Choir performed a number of songs for an audience of student teachers stud ying in the field of music. The student teachers asked ques tions of both Mr. Benner and the members of the choir about the field of music at the high school level. When the Lecture Concert had concluded, the A Capella Choir took a tour of the new Krannert Center for the Fine Arts, and then it was homeward bound again. Between the excitement of the concert and the snowstorm which greeted their return, the choir will not soon forget their day at the University of Illinois.

Varsity Takes Third Sophs Pin Championship

With Freddy The Fish, Coach Grubbs and Coach Owens, both Varsity and Sophomores squads couldn't help but start out with victories over St. Francis; Varsity 47 to 5 and the Sophomores with 43 to 20. That night the Grapplers displayed to the fans the art of sticking, or in other words pinning the opponent in their first match, by pinning one Spartan after another. Varsity went on from there to defeat Oswego in a match that resulted in a We-Go victory 27 to 14. Against Geneva the Grapplers won 40 to 6. The teams final season record was 6 wins, 8 losses. They placed third in both Conference and Dis trict. Captains Ed Thompson and Al Kowalewski were elected most valuable. Tom Davis was most improved. Peter Dom browski, Randy Gibson, and Rick Lukens were elected next years tri-captains for Varsity. The Sophomores team decided that they weren't going to settle for anything less than the Conference Championship. They were led by two outstanding captains, Chuck Zalesiak and Dave Spohn. Dave achieved a zenith point of success by going through the season with a 23-0 mark. The teams confer ence record was 5 wins, 2 losses. The season was one of great spirit and desire along with hard work and determination. These inseparable parts came to a whole with the Conference Championship for the team. A great team effort concluded in a good season and a great deal of pride in the Sophomore Championship.

33 The Mouse That Roared The Mouse That Roared is about the tiny country of Grand Fenwick which declared war on the United States of America · and thereby received aid for rehabilitating their country. Mark Grammer who plays Tully, the simple-minded leader of the operation, believes he is supossed to win and captures the new peace weapon called the "Q Bomb," which was created by the U .5. Dance Production this year involved both senior and junior girls. The dance class began work in September and the pro gram was presented to the public on Valentine's Day .· There were a variety of dances given throughout the pro gram with a non-stop effort on the part of all performers. A group that involved juniors and seniors danced to "Tommy," which was a jazz performance. Seniors performed in " Soft Landing on the Moon," an abstract dance, and " Reevers," a folksy type dance. Eileen Keeley was program chairman this year; she did a solo to " Exodus" giving a beautiful interpreta tion of the meaning, not just the measures of music. Sally Col ford also performed a solo; she danced to the Chicago's " Any body Know What Time It Is?" Both Eileen and Sally played a large part in the choreography of all the dances performed by the girls. A dance group from Fenton High School performed two -dances during the program, one of the dances was to " Exodus" but their interpretation was not as moving as Eileen's. To end the program the entire group from We-Go performed the " Irish Jig," which left everyone in high spirits when it was time to leave. Mrs. Jakes, the class's instructor, received two dozen red roses during bows. 36 1971 Talent Show ''One More TiDle''

The Pep Club presented their 1971 Talent Show entitled "One More Time" on April 22. The show included such num bers as "Times Have Changed," "America," "Fire and Rain," "Yesterday," "Love," and "Bed of Roses." The non-musical talent in the show included: "The Department Store" and "The Movers" done by the Marx Brothers, and the Black-outs and "Honey Pie" done by the Acme Trucking Company. The 1971 Talent Show exhibited to the students and to the com munity the promising talent which is here at West Chicago High School.

Harried Harriers The West Chicago Cindermen were upset with the results of their track meets this year. Varsity just couldn't get hold of a victory. Losing isn't encouraging, but they went on working and tried hard at each meet. Even though they lost meet after meet, they didn't lose faith in what they them selves could do. They tried hard, and that's what counts. Rick Engstrom, Jon Voelz and Greg Haney are seniors on the team. Rick and Greg are both runners. Jon has been working at shot put. Don Voelz has helped the team out with pole vaulting. Next year, Mike Hanes will return as an event runner for the team's half-mile. Joe Strock has been running the mile for the team at 4.55. The sophomores have shown to have had a better season. Bill Fredericks, Armando Romero, Rene Garcia, Frank Ville la have done a great job in the team relay. Scott Dierking once again proved his skill as the runner for Cindermen, with 10.5 being his best time. Freshman Greg Hoffman is lead shot putter, with his best throw being 46 3/4.

Golfers Look to Victory "Desire, dedication to improve, receptiveness to construc tive instruction and criticism," was the reply given by coach Mr. Swan when asked what makes a good golf team and golfer. The team has proven its desire by its results this season. Var sity ~ith its top players, Mike Parsons, Jay Huff, Bill Hodson, Curt Rohwedel and Ken Kocher, has a record of 5 wins, O loss es. The Sophomore record is 3 wins, 1 loss. Next year's teams look very good. The team will only be losing two of its 9 top golfers.

42 Zero- Love As the saying goes, "You can't win them all," and this say ing can be applied to the Tennis team, for it hasn't. So far this season, out of 10 matches they have had, only one has resulted in a We-Go victory. Despite the team's losing streak, they kept on trying with spirit and might. Outstanding players were the co-captains for singles, Doug Schmult and Mike Ford, and Joe Butler co-captain for doubles.

43

Let's Go, You Guys! The Wildcats started out the season with an undesirable rec ord of eight straight losses. Then in the ninth game, the Cats managed to tie with Lake Park 4-4. In their 12th game, the score was We-Go 6, Geneva 4. Against Batavia's Bulldogs, the Cats gave great excitement to the fans when they had to go into nine innings and won with a score of 8-6. Bob Muilenberg was the leading pitcher with four victories. His earned run average was 2.51 and he had 77 strike outs in 61 1/3 innings . Wes Tredup was the leading hitter with a batting average of .329 and 14 runs batted in. Wes lead the team in doubles with six. Besides being an outstanding catcher, Ron McGee was one of the leading hitters all season. Ron's average was .280 and he lead the team in extra base hits with three doubles and four triples.

Before their parents and friends, initiates received their pins from Miss Charlotte Ekern and Mr. David Ream. Other teach ers who helped in the planning of the evening were Miss Patri cia Peterson and Mr. Howard Holcombe. Following the initia tion, refreshments, made by the home economics department, were served in the library. Six seniors scored high on the National Merit Test which they took in February of their junior year. Scoring in the upper two percent of seniors in the nation and receiving Letters of Commendation were: Thomas Davis, Walter Dempsey, Mi chael Lynch, David Reynolds, and Marcia Utech. Carol Kloubec, scoring well on the National Merit Test, took the Scholastic Aptitude Test. After this final test she was placed among the upper one percent of seniors in the nation and re ceived a Certificate of Merit.
