A Capella Choir Performs The world is a glob of molded contrasts - Black and White ideas in conflict - Nixon's Silent Majority ... youth unrest; Women's Lib- (Are we going to vote at 18 ?) Contrasts around me everywhere ... You-Me continually different. CHALLENGE Community High School West Chicago, Illinois Editor Denise Fiene Advisor Mrs. Katherine Coyner September 6, 1970 the freedoms of summer float away to leave with us the conformities of school. The rush-routine haunts our being with schedules, rules, and the confusion of procedures. For nine months the rush of classes, study and grades propels us onward to question ourselves, our future, our hopes and goals - the quest to accomplish. Amidst the haste and boredom of routine to which we must succomb we are all separate and individual, standing one to another in contrast. 3 4 With an optimistic outlook, 1970-71 began, promising a year different from the uncertain ties of school year 1969-70. Activities were restored giving students a wide range of ways in which to express themselves. Students with similiar ideas joined into numerous groups according to common interests. Still some stu dents stood by themselves, seemingly apart from everyone else. Changes appeared throughout the building, from new policies to new teachers to a new superintendent. Superintendent Saimon took a special interest in the school. He was often seen at school activities or talking to students for a moment or two in the hall. He displayed his athletic ability during the game against the Harlem Diplomats. At the NHS Banquet he conversed casually with students while sampling senior opinions. This year witnessed increased experimenta tion in class teaching. Some faculty members searched for interesting ways to present mate rial and others probed for new methods. Biolo gy classes were run on a group lecture - indi vidual experimentation basis. In many classes a trend grew toward independent learning for the individual student. The IRO program has offered students an opportunity to gain prac tical experience in the field of their choice. Now more classes are adopting the idea of learning through experiencing. Classes like sociology appealed to the student to make him more aware of the relevant things in our ev eryday world. 5 Present school policies strongly contrasted with those of previous years. One change was the new library policy, put into effect at the beginning of the school year by the new librar ians. They limited use of the library to certain days according to study halls. Because of this action, students pushed for a return of the old library procedure and possibly a student lounge of some type. Out of this, talk-study hall grew into a realistic proposal which would offer students three alternatives for their free hours: quiet study, talk-study, or the library. Mr. Howard met with students in four class assemblies to discuss initiation of talk-study hall and reemphasized student responsibili ties. With the creation of talk-study hall, stu dents were allowed the freedom and responsi bility of choice. Last year a group of concerned parents unit ed together for the purpose of restoring activi ties cut by financial difficulties. This year the Booster Club continued to contribute money for this purpose by such fund-raising events as the Harlem Diplomat Game. With the mon ey Booster Club raised, it funded the All School Play and the Spring Musical. New uni forms were purchased this year for the Cheer leaders and for the newly formed Porn-Pon squad with Booster help. Booster Club helped to give Wego students the opportunity to display their talent through outside competitions. West Chicago took first place in the State Music Contest, for which Boosters paid participation expenses. Speech was another activity restored partly through Booster Club effort. Pat Fota became the first West Chicago student to progress through the district and sectional speech contests to the state finals. 7 Life is a web of disappointment and ecstasy- each affecting everyone differently. 8 9 10 Students together - alone sharing time , tomorrow. 11 As students are different from each other So are their memories of theyear- Yet to everyone West Chicago Community High School has meant something - something remembered - something commonly shared - - Shivering on a cold October night in football stands while hoping for a victory. - Rehearsing long hours after school for dramatics. - Being summoned by the dean for cutting a class. - Fighting off the boredom of a 7th hour study hall. - Sharing in the fun and mass confusion of a class project. 12 Homecoming 1970 at We-Go High Homecoming this year was one of the best in the history of our ,high school. It saw the return of many of the old traditions that were missing last year. The parade was the major readdi tion along with the marching band, Kittenetts, floats, and the cars carrying others involved in the festivities. This was the second year for the Bug Races, which went over so well last year. Again, there was competition between classes and then finally between the winning class and the faculty car. This was the second year in a row that the class of '72 came up victorious, much to their delight. Shortly -after the Bug Races were completed, the reinstated Homecoming Parade took place. There were a total of 20 en tries in the parade line-up. 14 First Place Senior Class Second Place Freshmen Class Third Place Junior Class fourth Place Sophomore Class There were six floats in the Homecoming parade this year. "We-Go is Sho-ln," from the nursery rhyme of the old woman Seniors won first place with their float slogan of "All The who lived in a shoe. Rhymes for Winning Times, C'mon Mothers Goose'Em, and This year the Juniors came up in third place with their float We'll Huff and Puff and Blow 'em Down." This is the second on the nursery rhyme of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Their year that the class of '71 has taken first place. float carried the slogan "Cats Stole Their Victory." This year the Freshmen came up with the second place float. Last but not least, the Sophomore class came in fourth place This is the first time in many years that we have had such an with their float on the nursery rhyme Snow White with the industrious Freshmen class. Their theme for their float was slogan "Who's the Toughest of Them All." 15 Festive Coro.nation and Dance 16 Homecoming 1970 in West Chicago saw the coronation of Pamela Dettmann as Queen and Edmund Thompson as King. Gracing the Queen's court were Terry Bowman, Margo Guer ra, Donna Hensel and Virginia Hoppe. The king was selected for his outstanding dorsal, the foot. Coronation took place on Wednesday of Homecoming week to allow the Queen's reign ing over all homecoming festivities. Set in the aura of Never, Never Land, the Homecoming Dance took place in the high school cafeteria. The dance was held from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Music for romance was provided by Gene Yates and His Orchestra. The group tried out a few jazz numbers but soon saw that the couples were more in favor of the slow, graceful dances. Presentation of the Queen and Court was at 10:00 p.m. Queen Pamela Dettmann was escorted by William Fawell. Terry Bowman was escorted by William Weyrauch, Margo Guerra was escorted by Keith Day, Donna Hensel was escort ed by Brad Westrom, and Virginia Hoppe was escorted by Gregory Buikema. Attending the Homecoming Dance this year were several couples of previously-graduated students. Registrars this year were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Netzel. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dettman, parents of the queen, were also in attendance. 17 Wildcats Victory of the Year October 16, 1970 was the day of the great Wildcat Home coming victory. The fans were wild the entire eveining as our Cats and Kits battled away with the Trojans of Cary Grove. The first game of the evening handed our Kits a tough job in keeping the Trojans back. On offense Scott Dierking made some spectacular runs gaining a total of 70 yards and 2 T. D.'s to his long list of credits. Joseph Hitzemann made the 3rd T. D. for the Kits but for all their hard work our boys had to take the only tie of their Championship careers with a score of 18 to 18. The Varsity Cats had the best night of the season and they gave their fans something to cheer about as they defeated the Trojans with a score of 21 to 14. Randy Gibson had a terrific running night as he chalked up the yards against the Trojans. Ed Thompson also had a good night against the opposition; Ed carried the ball as Fullback. It was a cold night but the Wildcats were HOT. 18 19 Varsity Tried, But . The We-Go Wildcats had a difficult season this year, but · they showed great effort. With the new coaches, Mr. Unruh and Mr. Sterner, the team worked out constantly. The tri-cap tains, Steve Hensel, Mark Prutzman, and Ed Thompson helped to urge them on·at the practice sessions. Even though the team had great stamina, they couldn't get the points needed to win. The team's conference standing was two wins, five losses. They ended the season in sixth place, tied with Kaneland's Knights. Even though they only won two games, those two games showed that the team's spirit was still high and they had the ability to react fantastically when the pressure was applied to them.

Orange Soul Sheet Tipping to the Nu Music Movement Volume 1 issue 10 718-455-0092 [email protected] 818-506-1424 (West Coast office) June1-15, 2007 Kevin Harewood (Publisher) Bruce Jones (advertising sales) ===================== A Look Back to Move Forward We are in the month of June which is hailed as “Black Music Month”. This yearly occurrence has led me to reflect on the music that has been the foundation of the music menu of my life. The first artists I really got into were Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Sly and The Family Stone. It is a well known fact that Stevie and Marvin recorded for the then independently owned Motown family of labels. Sly recorded for the major Columbia Records. However, his music and visual output still exhibited that he was a bastion of independent thought. In my college days I began an affinity for jazz by coming across Grover Washington Jrs Soul Box and Mr Magic albums. These records made me go back and find the music of Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Dexter Gordon my father had played since I was a little thing. Grover was originally on the independent CTI label owned by Creed Taylor. My excursion into reggae started with Bob Marley’s “Natty Dread” which was on Chris Blackwell’s then independent Island Records. I really got open to hip hop with “Rock Box” on the independent Profile label and “Eric B For President” by Eric B and Rakim which ended up on Island subsidiary 4 th and Broadway. My first job in the music business was at the then independent A&M records.

She was an exceptional musician who married John Coltrane and continued his spiritual quest. When John Coltrane died in 1967, it left his wife of only a few years bereft. After a time of great suffering, Alice met guru Swami Satchidananda and traveled to India with him. Following a visit there, she had a vision to open an ashram, and bought 50 acres of land in Agoura Hills, California, on the outskirts of Los Angeles. There a multi-ethnic and multi generational religious community grew up around her. The high point of living in this very special and loving environment took shape on Sundays when Alice would lead the community in a musical ceremony, mixing both gospel and Indian chant, to create a music she wholly invented.
