The rush-routine haunts our being with schedules, rules, and the confusion of procedures. For nine months the rush of classes, study and grades propels us onward to question ourselves, our future, our hopes and goals - the quest to accomplish. Amidst the haste and boredom of routine to which we must succomb we are all separate and individual, standing one to another in contrast. 3 4 With an optimistic outlook, 1970-71 began, promising a year different from the uncertain­ ties of school year 1969-70. Activities were restored giving students a wide range of ways in which to express themselves. Students with similiar ideas joined into numerous groups according to common interests. Still some stu­ dents stood by themselves, seemingly apart from everyone else. Changes appeared throughout the building, from new policies to new teachers to a new superintendent. Superintendent Saimon took a special interest in the school. He was often seen at school activities or talking to students for a moment or two in the hall. He displayed his athletic ability during the game against the Harlem Diplomats. At the NHS Banquet he conversed casually with students while sampling senior opinions.

This yearly occurrence has led me to reflect on the music that has been the foundation of the music menu of my life. The first artists I really got into were Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Sly and The Family Stone. It is a well known fact that Stevie and Marvin recorded for the then independently owned Motown family of labels. Sly recorded for the major Columbia Records. However, his music and visual output still exhibited that he was a bastion of independent thought. In my college days I began an affinity for jazz by coming across Grover Washington Jrs Soul Box and Mr Magic albums. These records made me go back and find the music of Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Dexter Gordon my father had played since I was a little thing. Grover was originally on the independent CTI label owned by Creed Taylor. My excursion into reggae started with Bob Marley’s “Natty Dread” which was on Chris Blackwell’s then independent Island Records. I really got open to hip hop with “Rock Box” on the independent Profile label and “Eric B For President” by Eric B and Rakim which ended up on Island subsidiary 4 th and Broadway. My first job in the music business was at the then independent A&M records.

Toulmin Foundation Support for the Signature Artists Series provided by the Howard Gilman Foundation The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane ALICE COLTRANE TURIYASANGITANANDA, AN APPRECIATION Presented with Luaka Bop Alice Coltrane was an African American artist, mother, and spiritual leader who grew up playing gospel, classical, and jazz in Detroit. She was an exceptional musician who married John Coltrane and continued his spiritual quest. When John Coltrane died in 1967, it left his wife of only a few years bereft. After a time of great suffering, Alice met guru Swami Satchidananda and traveled to India with him. Following a visit there, she had a vision to open an ashram, and bought 50 acres of land in Agoura Hills, California, on the outskirts of Los Angeles. There a multi-ethnic and multi generational religious community grew up around her. The high point of living in this very special and loving environment took shape on Sundays when Alice would lead the community in a musical ceremony, mixing both gospel and Indian chant, to create a music she wholly invented.
