Sbandieratori Ducato Casventum, the flag-throwing troupe from Sermoneta, Italy, put on an incredible show for the audiences who saw them perform on the sports court at the Colosseum Stage each night. These pictures, taken Saturday night, July 20, hopefully give you an idea of their skill, technique and athleticism. Flag throwing groups have become a popular attraction for Festa Italiana, and contingents from various provinces of Italy have entertained crowds over the years. This was the second straight year for Sbandieratori Ducato Casventum. Festa has not only brought these talented performers to Milwaukee because their importance in historical Italian culture but also their unique performance, with flying flags, the loud sound of drums and trumpets and colorful medieval costumes, all of which provides a spectacle not often seen in the United States. Winning bocce matches under adverse conditions sometimes requires a miracle, and a team named Jesus Is Lord got one as it captured the 2019 Festa Italiana Bocce Tournament championship. Prior to the opening of Festa, Summerfest officials had new sod laid over the area that Festa uses for its bocce courts. Then Mother Nature let loose with several heavy downpours. So suffice it to say, the Randall Jacobs (center) wowed the judges and audience with a performance of bocce courts were not in good playing condition the entire weekend of Festa. PAGE 24 – SEPTEMBER 2019 THE ITALIAN TIMES Putting up displays at Festa is no easy task

The first display that Festa visitors no doubt noticed when they entered from the Mid Gate was the arch, reminiscent the one seen at an Italian society festival in Milwaukee in the 1920s and 1930s. After determining the exact measurements for the base of the arch, the base blocks were put in place. Then the four pillars had to go up. Here, ICC President/Festa General Chair Joe Emanuele (left) is seen carrying one end of the final pillar. On the other end are volunteers Cosmo Carini and Brayden Kuptz.

Next, the pillars had to be stabilized around the base with the rings slid down from the top of each pillar to the bottom. Here, Kuptz (on ladder) is handing down one of the rings to Emanuele and Tom Lupo.
