Throughout the twentieth century, New Testament scholar- ship primarily worked under the assumption that only two languages, Aramaic and Greek, were in common use in the land of Israel in the first century. Studies on the Gospels have assumed that Aramaic was the only viable language for Jesus’ public teaching or for

Reseñas 295 Myrtia η» 20, 2005 Gaspar Morocho Gayo, Estudios de Crítica Textual (1979-1986), [ed. Μ.

  • Narrative Transportation & Missional Identity in 1 Peter
A People Called: Narrative Transportation & Missional Identity in 1 Peter Submitted by David Michael Shaw to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of PhD in Theology May 2017 This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. Signature: ………………………………………………………….. Abstract Conversations concerning the missional posture of 1 Peter have been dictated largely by the now (in)famous debate between David Balch’s assimilationist position over and against John Elliott’s more sectarian position. More recent work has sought to bridge the gap between Balch and Elliott with a variety of more nuanced positions such as Miroslav Volf’s “Soft Difference”. Most of the discussion revolves around the practicalities of cultural engagement and what it might mean for church members to interact with the world as “Christians” in an increasingly hostile environment. The present thesis takes a step back from the coal face of missional engagement to focus on how that mission is shaped. More particularly, I am concerned with how 1 Peter utilises the language of divine calling (καλέω) that appears in five specific instances (1:13–21; 2:4–10; 2:18–25; 3:8–17; 5:6–14), alongside central events and motifs from the Old Testament, to cultivate a narrative that forges a distinct Christian identity and mission, that has its basis in Israel’s history and the life of Christ.

  • Calendario Massolini GIUDEA 2013

Tyndale Bulletin 46.2 (1995) 251-285. THE DATE OF THE MAGDALEN PAPYRUS OF MATTHEW (P. MAGD. GR. 17 = P64): A RESPONSE TO C.P. THIEDE1 Peter M. Head Summary This article considers Carsten P. Thiede’s arguments concerning the date of P64 and suggests that he has both over-estimated the amount of stylistic similarity between P64 and several Palestinian Greek manuscripts and under-estimated the strength of the scholarly consensus of a date around AD 200. Comparable manuscripts are adduced and examined which lead to the conclusion that the later date is to be preferred. I. Introduction This article is a response to the arguments of Carsten Peter Thiede which were re-published in the previous issue of Tyndale Bulletin.2 The most significant and controversial of Thiede’s findings was that the Magdalen Papyrus of Matthew was written sometime before the end of the first century. This conclusion, and the palaeographical basis of Thiede’s arguments, will be the focus of our response. In particular we shall examine the manuscripts appealed to by Thiede as 1An earlier form of this paper was presented to the Early Christian and Jewish Studies Seminar, chaired by Dr. W. Horbury in Cambridge on May 5th 1995 whose members are thanked for their helpful discussion. Thanks are also due to the Librarian, Magdalen College, Oxford, Dr. C. Y. Identificazione del frammento 7Q5 Autore: © Gianluigi Bastia, All Rights Reserved, Prima edizione 26.11.2004 Ultima revisione: 11.03.2009 – richiede font greco: greek.ttf 1.
