Conversations with Ed and Lorraine Warren, T. Sealyham, Omnimedia Publishing LLC, 2012, 193585688X, 9781935856887, 322 pages. Demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, the original ghost hunters, sit down with fellow demonologist Tony Spera to discuss their most famous cases. Ed Warren began his ghost-hunting career at a young age because he lived in a real haunted house and witnessed paranormal activities firsthand. Clairvoyant and light medium Lorraine Warren discovered her psychic abilities such as reading aura, hearing spirits, detecting evil presences and/or preternatural entities with more and more exposure to the supernatural world. Lorraine appears on A&E's Paranormal State TV series. The one thing Lorraine has learned, there are no atheists in a true haunted house. The Amityville Horror, a true story, is the Warrens' most famous haunting investigation. The house at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, Long Island, New York, is the subject of international newspaper articles, thousands of websites, over a dozen books and at least ten films. The alleged diabolic possession of Ronald Defeo, Jr. and the Amityville murders by an evil presence is an ongoing debate. Were there ghosts, spirits and other invading psychic entities in the house? George and Kathy Lutz claimed they fled the house from an invading entity or entities. Was it a hoax? What happened to the Amityville Horror house? The Warrens tell all. Allen and Carmen Snedeker experienced the real horror of living in a possessed house in Southington, Connecticut, when they unknowingly moved into a haunted funeral home infested with paranormal activity. Only an exorcism sanctioned by the Catholic Church brought peace to the house.

INVESTIGATIVE FILES Ghost Hunters elief that spirits of the dead exist and can appear to the living is Bboth ancient and widespread, yet the actual study of ghostly phenomena has largely been lacking. So-called “inves- tigation” has ranged from mere collecting of ghost tales to the use of “psychic” impressions to a pseudoscientific reliance on technology applied in a questionable fashion. Real science has largely been ignored. Collecting Tales What passed for investigation in earlier times is illustrated by a “true” ghost story related by Pliny the Younger (ca. 100 a.d.). It has been “regarded as the first investigated ghost story” (Finucane 2001). A hearsay tale, already a century old when Figure 1. A demonic or inhuman spirit, which can be used interchangeably, is a spirit in that they exist without bodies, possess abilities greater than that of humans (rendering them inhuman), are hyperintelligent, react negatively to Christian religious iconography, and are malevolent in their behavior towards humans.

The Skeptics Guide to the Universe: How to Know What’s Really Real in a World Increasingly Full of Fake by Dr. Steven Novella with Bob Novella, Cara Santa Maria, Jay Novella, and Evan Bernstein, ISBN: 978-1-5387-6053-6 The Skeptics Guide to the Universe is a wonderfully comprehensive work for anyone who already identifies as a skeptic or who wants to become a well-informed one. Podcast fans might recognize the title—it’s shared with a weekly show hosted by Dr. Steven Novella and his team of co-authors. The book will probably take longer to read than listening to an episode of the podcast—or even several. Coming in at almost 450 pages, The Skeptics Guide delivers just what its name implies: a guide to the universe for those of a more skeptical nature. The book is broken down into five sections: Core Concepts Every Skeptic Should Know, Adventures in Skepticism, Skepticism and the Media, Death by Pseudoscience, and Changing Yourself and the World. The first section, Core Concepts Every Skeptic Should Know, is the longest and most densely packed with information. In the first 316 pages of the book, Novella lays the fundamental groundwork for skepticism. This section is subdivided into the following categories: Neuropsychological Humility and Mechanisms of Deception, Metacognition, Science and Pseudoscience, and Iconic Cautionary Tales from History. Novella uses a lot of technical jargon, especially in these earlier chapters, and does an excellent job of explaining this jargon and illustrating each term through vivid examples, but if you don’t pay attention in the first section, you will be lost in the latter part of the book.

Demonic Possession and Fractured Patriarchies in Contemporary Fundamentalist Horror. This thesis is a survey of contemporary horror films from the perspective of fundamentalist American audiences. Using Judith Butler’s work on gender performativity and religious studies scholarship as framework, I investigate how five visual texts perpetuate patriarchal family structures. The five texts I explore are The Last Exorcism (2010), The Conjuring (2013) and The Conjuring 2 (2016), The Witch: A New England Folk Tale (2015), and The Exorcist television series (2016). In each chapter, I analyze a key family member per patriarchal norms, and how violations of these norms contribute to the family’s supernatural crisis. The figures I analyze for each text is The Weak Father, The Bad Mother, and The Unstable Daughter.
