While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation. Silver prints of "photographs" may be ordered at additional charge by writing the Order Department, giving the catalog number, title, author and specific pages you wish reproduced. 5. PLEASE NOTE: Some pages may have indistinct print. Filmed as received. THE PERIOD OF LA CHUTE AND L'EXIL ET LE ROYAUME 202 VIII, CONCLUSION 269 LIST OF REFERENCES 2 77 V ABSTRACT The theme of death and crime is consistently pre dominant in the works of Albert Camus from the beginning of his literary career. In each of his novels, not only is a crime committed, but it also appears as the central act of the work. Camus' originality as regards his concern for the problem of man's mortality and criminality, how ever, does not reside in a consciousness of death which subsequently leads him to a set of guidelines for human conduct. Rather, he observes that there exists a relation between death and crime and that this relation constitutes a fundamental characteristic of man's nature and of the human condition. The purpose of this thematic study is (1) to trace, through structural analysis, the theme of death and crime in the novels of Camus and to examine the relation that exists between man's consciousness of the fact of death and his criminality, (2) to determine whether or not there is evolution of his ideas on death and crime as revealed in these works as well as in some of his essays and plays, (3) to determine the nature of that thematic evolution, and (4) to explore crime as a human act on both a literal and a symbolic level. vi vii My tracing of the theme follows the chronological order of Camus' works, and the divisions of this study correspond to the three periods which constitute Camus• literary career. The first is that of La Mort heureuse and L'Etranger and the works written between 1935 and 1942. During this period, Camus was conscious of crime as an act committed by men searching for happiness. The thematic structure death-crime-happiness dominates these works. Yet the theme of death is subordinate to that of crime. Man passes from a state of primitive innocence and animality to a state of criminality and ,humanity. As a result of this process, he has become conscious of his criminality and mortality and, at the same time, he feels innocent of his crime. The second period of La Peste and L'Homme r6volt£, covering 1943 to 1951, is that of crime as violence, criminal acts which man commits against his fellow man in the name of man's future happiness. The criminals in these works have a strong sense of their culpability and are unwillingly guilty. They carry within them the microbes of the plague, a potential for violence and the assassina tion of their fellow men. They cannot rid themselves of that potential, but can only diagnose it and strive to remain innocent criminals. Once again, as in the first Camusian literary period, the theme of death is subordinate to and exists apart from that of crime. viii Further evolution takes place in the death-crime theme during Camus' third literary period of La Chute and L'Exil et le royaume which spans the 1950's. Clamence is a guilty criminal who has failed to act and who has done nothing to prevent the death of his fellow man. He has committed no crime as such, but he has let death take place. During this period, the thematic structure, death-crime-happiness, undergoes vast change. Death has become a crime in man's own eyes. It is a crime committed not against a god, but against himself. Once again, in becoming aware of himself as criminal, he passes or falls from a state of primitive innocence and animality to a state of consciousness of culpability and becomes human.

  • Symbolism in Edgar Allan Poe's Selected Short Stories
ISSN 1799-2591 Theory and Practice in Language Studies, Vol. 8, No. 3, pp. 314-319, March 2018 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.17507/tpls.0803.06 Symbolism in Edgar Allan Poe’s Selected Short Stories Hatameh Sadat Jandaghi Vali-e-Asr University, Iran Esmaeil Zohdi Department of English, Vali-e-Asr University of Rafsanjan, Iran Abstract—In Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories symbolism is the main figure of speech of his stories. The main aim of this study is recognizing the use of symbolism in “Hop – Frog” (1850), “The Pit and the Pendulum” (1842) and “The Cask of Amontillado” (1846), and decoding the symbols and various meanings they signify according to Herman Northrop Frye’s theory. This paper tries to explore the way symbolism is used in Edgar Allan Poe’s selected short stories, the writer’s motives and amount of his success. Index Terms—symbolism, symbol, stylistic devices, herman northrop frye, Hop – Frog, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Cask Of Amontillado I. INTRODUCTION Figures of speech are tools of creativity in everyday communications and the literature that is used to explain something different from ordinary usage. “The Collins English Dictionary (2006) defined figure of speech as ‘an expression such as simile, in which words do not have their literal meaning, but are categorized as multi – word expressions that act in the text as units’” (As cited in Fadaee, 2011, p. 1). A language which uses figures of speech is called “figurative language” and according to Ghaffar Tajalli’s “Idioms and Metaphorical Expressions in Translation” (2003) the aim of figurative language is to supply features of clarity, beauty and others in the language.

  • Psychologie Analytique 1 Psychologie Analytique

The thesis argues that Jal lu'l-Dín Rúmi, Sant Kabír, Matsuo Bashó and William Blake are not only "mystic" and "symbolic" poets, but that they have enough in common to justify the creation of a new, more well-defined area of interdisciplinary research between the fields of literature and religious studies. This thesis refers to them as "perceptive poets" and aims to define this term. The selected poets represent mystical branches of Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity.

However, the primary goal of conducting this work is to focus on pragma linguistic analysis of symbolism in William Saroyan's play "The Oyster and the Pear." Frye's Theory of Symbolism was used to evaluate and analyse the symbols gathered from the play. Using direct, precise, and unambiguous language is unappealing to language users because it is dry, uncomfortable, and rigid, causing language partners to get easily bored and dissatisfied. To summarize, ambiguous language is becoming increasingly common among language users as the need for honest communication contact, plain language, and assertive requirements are not immediately addressed in the communication process. KEYWORDS : Symbolism, Objects, Events, Hidden Realities, Despair, Hope I. INTRODUCTION This study's researcher is interested in symbolism in William Saroyan's "The Oyster and the Pear." Literature is a mirror of society expressed in poetry and prose utilising language to convey meaning either directly or indirectly.
