Delta Sigma Pi Chapter Northwestern University

I want to commend Amanda Runner and Colin Ochs for their work in building up the foundation for a chapter of Delta Sigma Pi here on our campus. Northwestern has a strong liberal arts tradition, which certainly has its strengths, but it does leave students with less than a desired preparation in business issues, and leaves them to close this gap on their own. The programming put on so far by the membership has certainly helped on that score. Furthermore, the members have been active in some of the best philanthropy done here. Project Pumpkin is wonderful for the children who are brought into Northwestern 's safe and stimulating environment, and it also goes a long way to building social capital between the university and the sometimes grumpy city around us.

With Amanda, Colin, and the group of students they've built up, I can see a bright future for Delta Sigma Pi here, and I hope that you will grant them a charter.

Letter of Support lor Delta Sigma Pi Chapter at Nortlnvesterii University

To whom it may concern :

I am writing in support ofthe founding members ofthe Delta Sigma Pi Northwestern Colony in their effort to become an official ciiapter. 1 am a faculty member in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences at Northwestern University.

A Delta Sigma Pi chapter would be a great addition to the current student organizations on campus. Students at Northwestem are already benefiting from DSP activities, including a recent panel on corporate responsibility and a workshop on job searches. These events help to prepare our undergraduate students for the business world. DSP also contributes to the university through a number of community service activities, including participation in Project Pumpkin last fall.

I recently visited the Delta Sigma Pi website and saw the activities of chapters at other universities. I am excited about the prospect of bringing a DSP chapter to Northwestern.

Please feel free to contact me with any further questions.

Board of Directors Delta Sigma Pi Professional Fraternity 330 South Campus Avenue Oxford, OH 45056

Dear Brothers:

It is with great pleasure that I recommend that the Board of Directors approve this petition and grant chapter status to the Nu Nu Nu colony of Delta Sigma Pi at Northwestern University.

I have been involved with the colony since its inception and have had the pleasure of working closely with the colony on its road to reactivation. In my capacity as District Director, I have attended numerous professional events and colony meetings, and consider myself well informed as to their capabilities.

As a founding father of the recently reactivated Alpha Omega chapter, I recognize the myriad challenges that are peculiar to colonies, and I feel that the Nu Nu Nu colony has consistently risen to meet those challenges. From leadership changes to motivation issues among its members to bureaucratic red tape within the university, the colony has certainly seen its share of roadblocks. Nonetheless, they've met each of these issues with their heads held high, and have persevered towards their goal.

As a result of this hard work, the colony is now a dedicated group of young men and women who have earned the respect of the Northwestern community, both among the faculty as well as their peers. With their strong executive committee, dedicated membership base and fraternal support within the region, this will be a very successful chapter upon reactivation.

These colony members demonstrated their professionalism, their brotherhood, and their commitment to our fraternity, and I believe they are well prepared to carry on the Zeta chapter tradition. After several years of tireless effort on their part, it would be my pleasure to call each of them "Brother," and it is with that in mind that I urge the Board to approve the petition and grant chapter status.

Sincerely,

John Ridgeway District Director Nu Nu Nu Colony of Delta Omega 935 3019 N Lincoln Ave Chicago, IL 60657 773.975.1552 [email protected]

Delta Sigma Pi - Board of Directors 330 S Campus Ave Oxford, OH 45056

Dear Members of the Board of Directors:

In the past two years, I have watched the Nu Nu Nu colony at Northwestern University - Evanston grow from a small group of students into a thriving organization on campus. I highly recommend that you approve the charter petition ofthe Nu Nu Nu colony. Their continued efforts have made a tremendous impact upon Evanston and the Northwestern community.

With District Director John Ridgeway in attendance, we have met with the colony Executive Committee on many occasions to discuss various long and short term goals. Fraternity policies and procedures, and other issues or concerns they met. Among their strengths, the colony members are at the top of their game at professional activities. They have displayed excellent usage of campus resources and Northwestern alumni to provide university wide events. On several occasions, I have witnessed their activities draw large audiences that they have filled auditoriums to capacity. The nature of this can only be complimented by their hard efforts to research highly credible resources, their drive to create effective marketing schemes, and their ability to co-sponsor the activities with other student organizations.

From the above hard work and dedication, I must recommend the approval ofthe Nu Nu Nu colony's charter petition. Formalizing this group into a collegiate chapter will only fuel their energy. They have proven themselves worthy to be our brothers by meeting all the necessary criteria and by gaining the respect of not only myself and the Northwestern community, but also by many alumni and collegiate students of Delta Sigma Pi.

Sincerely,

John Juat Delta Sigma Pi Great Lakes Regional Vice President Northwestern University is a private institution founded in 1851 to serve the Northwest Territory, an area that now includes the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and part of Minnesota. In 1853 the founders purchased a 379-acre tract of land on the shore of Lake Michigan 12 miles north of Chicago. They established a campus and developed the land near it, naming the surrounding town Evanston in honor of one of the University's founders, John Evans. After completing its first building in 1855, Northwestern began classes that fall with two faculty members and 10 students.

Northwestern's founders were pioneers of ambition and intelligence who became Chicago's leading citizens. In addition to attorney Grant Goodrich, there was Orringtcm Lunt, a founder of the Chicago Board of Trade, who envisioned a university that would rival any institution in the eastern United States. And there was John Evans, whose medical skills were matched by his visionary gifts. His success as the former head of the obstetrics department at Rush Medical College, his real estate acumen, his term as a city alderman, and his background as consolidator of railroads provided him with the abundant cash needed for his idealistic schemes.

Evans contributed the $1,000 down payment for acreage north of Chicago and assumed responsibility for the mortgage covering the balance. He was among the first to build himself a home on swamp-drained land near the current Alumni Center in the area the trustees named Evanston in his honor. Through the efforts of Evans, Goodrich, Lunt, and others. Northwestern University was officially established on January 28, 1851, when its Act of Incorporation was passed by the Illinois legislature.

The next century would mark a period of rapid achievement for the university. In 1869, trustees voted to admit young women to University classes "under the same terms and conditions as young men," and Evanston resident Rebecca Hoag became the first female to enroll at Northwestern. That same year, Northwestern's oldest existing building. University Hall, was built. In 1896 the first PhDs were awarded - c^ne in chemistry and one on philosophy. Representatives from Northwestern and six other Midwestern universities created the conference to supervise intercollegiate sports among their institutions, which would eventually become the Big Ten. By 1900, Northwestern had the third highest student enrollment in the nation. 11 Today Northwestern is a major private research university located on lakefront campuses in Evanston and Chicago, with the main undergraduate campus being located in Evanstc:>n. Approximately 2,300 full-time faculty teach 13,500 full-time students, 7,700 of whom are undergraduates.

A freshman class numbering more than 1,900 is selected from nearly 15,000 candidates. Sixty percent enroll with financial aid. Women constitute approximately half the undergraduate population; more than a fourth of the undergraduates are minc^rity students. Students come to Northwestern from all 50 states. Forty-four percent of this year's entering class is from the Midwest, 21 percent from the East, 18 percent from the West, 9 percent from the South, and 7 percent from foreign countries.

The median secondary school ranking of the students in the current freshman class is in the 96th percentile. Moreover, the median combined score of the Scholastic Aptitude Test for the class as a whole is approximately 1400. More than 40 percent of the freshman class was recognized by the National Merit Corporation for distinguished academic achievement. The Northwestern student body ranks among the top 15 schools nationally in the number of National Merit and National Achievement scholars. About one-third of the freshman class received some form of advanced placement upon entrance.

Although its primary function is academic, the University also provides a special kind of community within the cities of Evanston and Chicago. Cultural, social, and athletic events are

available on campus. Extensive nonacademic prc^gramming is offered through Norris University Center, the residential colleges, and various residential groups.

Pictured on the left is one of several Northwestern landmarks, the Arch, which stands at the southern boundary of the campus. 13 With twenty-five departments and as many specialized programs, Weinberg College intersects with every part of the University and enrolls students from all of Northwestern's undergraduate schools. The academic year is divided into three ten-week which retain quarters, the depth of semesters but encourage greater breadth. Shidents take as many as 50%o more courses than the two-semester system provides, and they enjoy a more diverse educational experience. The required College major concentrahon, selected from 40 fields, ensures depth of study. More than forty optional minors foster breadth. Faculty advisers help students navigate the abundant choices.

According to our most recent exit survey, 61% of the class planned immediate employment. Of those searching for positions, 70% had jobs or job offers by graduation. Of those planning further study, 90% were admitted to one or more schools (63'X, to their first 41% a choice); sought medical degree, 22% a law degree, 14% a Ph.D., and 23%, a master's degree. Most recent graduates (75%) plan eventually to take a post-graduate degree. Northwestern ranks ninth among universities educating the nation's leading business executives, and it is seventh among the institutions from which individuals listed in Who's Who in America have graduated.

All faculty members in Weinberg College teach undergraduate students. Less than 3% of student are in courses enrollments taught exclusively by teaching assistants, and those are mostly small introductory courses in foreign languages. Fifteen interdisciplinary programs offer minors or majors. Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences is a program with competitive admissions for students with superior analytical skills and interest in business careers. Last year more than half of advanced undergraduate courses enrolled fewer than 10 students. Special, small-enrollment courses include Professional Linkage Seminars, bridging the gap between academic training and real-world application and taught by members of the Chicago business and the professional communities.

Credit-bearing internships, field-study experiences, and study abroad are popular options. Faculty associated with the Kellogg Graduate School of Management offer courses in accounting, finance, and marketing especially designed for Weinberg students. The College has special agreements with Chicago's major cultural institutions, including the Field Museum, Art Institute, Adler Planetarium, and American Bar Foundation, to offer courses taught by experts.

In addition they are widely published in leading academic journals, nave been elected as fellows of prestigious professional organizations, and nave held senior positions in the federal government. This year we have also had an impressive list of visiting faculty, incluaing the recipient of the Nemmers prize in Economics, Ariel Rubinstein of Tel Aviv University. The faculty is now headed by the Department Chair Robert Porter following him stepping down as an Editor for the RAND Jc^urnal of Economics after nine years of service. The Associate Chair is Ian Savage. Joseph Ferrie and Mark Witte are the Director of Graduate Studies and the Director of Undergraduate Studies, respectively.

Economics department and the Kellogg Graduate School of Management. 15 The Nu Nu Nu Colony of Delta Sigma Pi at Northwestern University was begun in the winter of 2003 by a group of students who were interested in joining a business club but were dissatisfied with the scope of opportunities on campus. Blake Bible and Max Meyers contacted members of local Delta Sigma Pi chapters, and eventually cultivated an association with Brother John Ridgeway of the DePaul chapter.

This association led to the further development of the colony from a core group of eight interested individuals to a growing organization attracting new members with the combination of professional, volunteer and social opportunities offered by Delta Sigma Pi. Even in it's earliest stages, the organization showed great promise for success. The colony's first major event, bringing newly appointed CEO Ed Breen of Tyco International to campus, turned out hundreds of guests, including undergraduates, Kellogg Graduate School of Management students, professors, and local professionals.

The colony followed-up this success with smaller professional events, including several career panels of Northwestern alumni working in Chicago and professional contacts of colony members. Additionally, the colony sought to help its members by holding resume- writing workshops to help members prepare for upcoming career fairs and interviews.

On the community front, the colony worked with the already well-established campus volunteer organization, OASIS, volunteering Sunday afternoons at a rehabilitation facility on Sheridan Road in Chicago and Tuesday afternoons at an Evanston after-school program for disadvantaged youth. Nu Nu Nu has also devoted time to Campus Kitchens, repackaging leftover dining hall meals for homeless shelters. In all of these efforts, the colony also fostered a sense of brotherhood and familiarity between members by incorporating activities into regular meetings that helped members get to know one another.

16 Going forward, the Nu Nu Nu colony will operate to uphold the tenets of the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi, holding professional events for the mutual benefit of our members and the Northwestern community. Our goals in this facet include bringing to campus Northwestern alumni and other personal contacts to speak about their careers. Further, each fall and winter we will hold resume-writing and interviewing workshops for members in support of their full-time job and internship searches. To supplement this, we will also seek events off campus in the Chicago area. This fall we are visiting the Goose Island Brewery in Wrigleyville for a tour of Chicago's most famous brewery and beverage company.

Continuing to reach c^ut to the Evanston community, the chapter will devote both time and monetary support to local charities. Our focus will be aimed toward but not limited to those philanthropic ventures in business literacy and the encouragement of higher education. This spring, proceeds from a three-on-three basketball tournament will be devoted to a local charity dedicated to helping disadvantaged students complete and polish college applications.

Finally, to continue fostering brotherhood, the chapter will encourage socialization among members by incorporating dinners or social outings with our events. Such events will include dinner on certain Thursday nights at an Evanston restaurant and bowling outings to a nearby bowling alley.

Above all, the chapter recognizes the value of our members' time, and we will continue to strive for events that offer the greatest value added for our members. This means addressing the most relevant professional concerns of our membership. Inspiration for our programming will be drawn from the questions and interests of our members, and we will target business issues that will help our members succeed beyond Northwestern. 17 Membership Statistics
