Many years after graduation students may still be involved with these groups, or may have decided to join other groups like NSHP.org or NAAAP.org, where they take on a more national role and continue to support the professional development of their peers from the same ethnic background.

Educational Institutions EXAMPLE: Using the URL or web address of αΚΔΦ () from one of the major search engines like Google, simply enter “site:www.akdphi.org” and this reveals many pages including one listing the names of sisters celebrating their birthdays, another listing all the officers. Looking closely at the page that lists birthdays it becomes apparent that all these pages are addressed with the word “roster” in their URL. Adding this to our search we arrive at a search that yields all twelve months and lists all the name of sisters with birthdays on those months: site:www.akdphi.org inurl:roster

Another useful technique is to focus the search to universities catering to the needs of one particular group. One such example is searching historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). At this time there are 114 institutions of higher education focusing on serving the needs of the African American community. While not every graduate of HBCUs is a diverse candidate, a vast majority of them should be. A comprehensive list of these educational institutions is located here: www.edonline.com/cq/hbcu/. Searching through these websites using the site: command would reveal the names of students, alumni, staff and other points of contact.

Using the names of these HBCUs when searching through resume databases would also be a source of diverse leads. With little effort you can also identify lists of historically Hispanic colleges (hacu.net), women’s colleges (womenscolleges.org) and other similar keywords to include in your search.

University students may form affinity groups that are not fraternal in nature, yet still reveal their constituents’ diversity status. For there is an Asian Christian Fellowship at MIT (web.mit.edu/mitacf) whose membership consists primarily of Korean Americans. Locating and listing all these organizations would be an undertaking too large for this guide, but with the application of a few well-chosen keywords, researchers should be able to locate many of the ones relevant to their particular needs.

EXAMPLE: Say you are recruiting for engineering roles in , Georgia. is a highly regarded local university with a strong Engineering program. A simple search of their website for the keywords Latino and Organization should reveal a listing of many of the Latino affinity or special interest groups on campus. Searching for: site:gatech.edu latino organizations returns a listing of these organizations here: http://www.hispanicoffice.gatech.edu/presence/hispanic-latino-student-organizations.

Ask yourself… As you start your diversity search, ask yourself if the kind of people you seek are likely going to identify themselves as being part of a particular group. If so then before you begin using search engines come up with a list of words that your target audience would use to describe themselves. It’s best if you validate this list with someone who considers themselves part of that community. Ask them to tell you if these are keywords with which they identify, or at least keywords they recognize. If they don’t, then you may need to change your search completely.

Temptation may drive you to seek resumes or resume-like information but that is not as effective a technique because top diverse candidates will more likely hang out in regular places that don’t specifically identify them by ethnicity or other classification, and don’t list “just resumes.” If you insist on finding resumes, the best place to go is where there are many resumes, and that is the big job boards. After that, the second largest groups are the professional associations and affinity group. Beyond that you should focus your online sourcing to using keywords that would reveal basic information like name, title, contact info, and employer, in contexts that identify their connection with a diversity category.
