New visit model Starting on 1st December 2019, Oceanário de Lisboa implemented a new visit model that offers visitors access to all spaces and exhibits with a single ticket, and allows them to enjoy a more complete and flexible visit in an innovative and engaging environment, aligned with the ocean sustainability and conservation mission.

“Hooked on life” exhibition by Vicent Mock Featured in Oceanário de Lisboa’s main lobby from 28 June to 20 October 2019, the “Hooked on life” exhibition by Dutch artist Vincent Mock is “a tribute to the last giants of the ocean”. The 7 life-size marine sculptures were created from 22 000 hooks, a stark reminder of the alarming rate at which marine resources are exploited, and how this can that lead their exhaustion.

Exhibition “ONE - The ocean as you never felt it” Inaugurated on 11 January 2020, the new Oceanário de Lisboa temporary exhibition by Maya Almeida was designed, created, installed and assembled throughout 2019. Installed in the main lobby, in a structure made entirely of wood, the new exhibition zone comprises a raised 110 m2 room, which has increased the area open to visitors at the Oceanário de Lisboa.

New aquarium “Fish in armour” The aquarium contains several species from southern Australia that are rarely found in aquariums, in different shapes and colours, covered in bone plates that at first sight look like armour. 10 | //2019 An aquarium to discover and thrill

Although their conservation status is “Least Concern”, the data points to a decline in their populations, mainly due to the degra- dation of coastal habitats and accidental fishing. Native to Austra- lia, and infrequently found in European aquariums, this species is therefore rarely seen by the average citizen, but can be found at Oceanário de Lisboa, which raises the awareness of visitors to ma- rine biodiversity and the fragility of ecosystems, while also support- ing increased scientific understanding of the species.

New Atlantic cod An iconic species in Portugal Atlantic cod is one of the most important resources of the Atlantic, but also one of the most exploited by fishing activity. Its conservation status is “Vulnerable”. This species is of great cultural importance in Portugal. The introduction of eight new cod fish in the Atlantic habitat aquarium enriches the experience of visitors and raises awareness to the importance of conservation.

Common murre in the atlantic habitat The three new common murre were born in an aquarium in England and arrived to reinforce the existing colony in the Atlantic habitat at Oceanário de Lisboa. //2019 | 11

Reopening of the walkway through the indian habitat forest The reopening of the walkway offers visitors to Oceanário de Lisboa a more immersive experience in the Indian habitat forest.

€3.0 M invested on the equipment An important and extensive set of interventions were carried out throughout 2019, as part of a programme to ensure the highest standards in the management and maintenance of all equipment, facilities and support areas.

New free shuttle In 2019, Oceanário de Lisboa launched a new exclusive and free transport service. With a route that includes stops at the main hotels in Lisbon, the Oceanário Shuttle is available free of charge to all ticket holders, ensuring a comfortable journey from the city centre to Parque das Nações.

25 million visitors Oceanário de Lisboa reached 25 million visitors, and marked the occasion by recognising the contribution to ocean conservation made by all visitors over the last 21 years. Visitor number 25 million and their family, the Martins, were invited to learn more about the turtle conservation project in São Tomé and Príncipe.

In 2019, Oceanário de Lisboa recorded the second best year yet in number of visitors. The 2 % decrease in comparison with the previous year was essentially due to the lower number of foreign visitors, in line with the signs of a slowdown in the growth of tourism in the city of Lisbon. 12 | //2019 An aquarium to discover and thrill

Sperm whale Physeter macrocephalus

This project’s methodology is multi-disciplinary and innovative, combining the fields of spatial ecology, ecophysiology and ecotoxicology. It will use data collected in visual surveys, photo- identification based on individual marks present on the caudal fin, satellite biomarkers, biopsies, and microplastics found on surface waters. Awareness will be raised among the general public and the local community through multimedia tools, such as real-time transmission of the position of individual specimens. IN 2019 Over the course of 23 sea trips, 18 biopsies have been collected and over 5 000 photographs were taken for photo- identification. The catalogue of sperm whales in Madeira was updated and 220 individuals were identified, of which 15 were also identified in the Azores and the Canary Islands, demonstrating that there is connectivity between the Macaronesian archipelagos. Communication supports were also created for the project, namely a video, social media presence and lectures held at 7 schools, covering about 700 students.

LAW Within the scope of its policy on social responsibility and engagement with the community, Oceanário de Lisboa made several donations, under the patronage law, amounting to an overall value of 60 thousand euros. 36 | //2019 // Economic and financial analysis

In 2019, Oceanário de Lisboa strengthened its financial position with a 6 % growth in operating income before depreciation, with an increase in the operating margin to 33 % and the growth of all financial indicators, while continuing to strengthen its position as an institution for the conservation of marine biodiversity and the promotion of ocean literacy.

Oceanário de Lisboa recorded a slight slowdown in the number of visitors. However, ticket revenue grew 2 %, following the price increase registered in March and the adoption of the single ticket in December. Gift shop sales grew 18 %, in large part due to the increase in the diversity of products, and the investment in a larger offering of #SeaTheFuture brand items, focused on sustainability.

As far as investment is concerned, 2019 shows some stabilisation in the improvements made in the last two years in equipment structure, and a relevant investment in the new temporary exhibition “ONE - THE OCEAN AS YOU NEVER FELT IT”.

The continuous execution of conservation and education programmes demonstrates the strategic commitment to the Oceanário de Lisboa mission, as can be seen by the supported projects and initiatives presented in the following chart: //2019 | 37

// Prospects for 2020

2020 will be an uncertain year.

What was foreseen to be a year of growth, based on a stabilization of the tourists’ influx and a growth in national visitors, became a year of uncertainty due to the potential impacts of the Covid-19 virus, both in tourism and in the influx to public visitation spaces.

The attractiveness of a new exhibition such as “ONE”, the reduction in children’s ticket prices as soon as the VAT is reduced to 6 %, RESULTADOS MILHARES DE EUROS and the more aggressive commercial strategy focused on the tourist market, are the main tools used to combat this uncertainty.

Despite the uncertainties of the beginning of the year, we believe it will be possible to continue to guarantee, in 2020, the capacity to generate resources essential to the growth of activity for the conservation of the oceans.
