Year TheMake South of EnglandModel Classic Motorcyclecc / HP Show :Classes March------------------- 2020 Entered TBA www.elk-promotions.co.uk Year Make Model cc / HP Classes Entered 1911 FN Four Cylinder 493 Pre 1950 Overseas Club: Bike Details: Just rebuilt from a rusted relic over 6 years, first time at this show. 1914 Rover Sturmey Archer 3 ½ Pre 1950 Club: Sunbeam MCC Bike Details: Found languishing in a garage, last used in 1972, as witnessed by an old tax disc. Not a barn find but a garage find. 1920 Douglas W20 2 ¾ Pre 1950 Lightweight Club: Sunbeam MCC Bike Details: After supplying 25,000 motorcycles to the armed services in WWI Douglas returned to civilian production in 1919 with a range of 'Peace Programme' models. Priced at £90 with three-speed gearbox, clutch, footboards and kick-start, the W20 was the most expensive top-of-the-range Deluxe model of the 1920 2¾ HP models. This machine was left in the store room of a London motorcycle dealership in a non-running, derelict condition for many years. Purchased when the dealer closed in 2005, it was restored by the owner in time for the Douglas centenary in 2007 and used for London Douglas Club events, shows and Brooklands events. 1921 Sunbeam Model 6 TT Longstok 492/ Pre 1950 Competition / Special Club: Sunbeam MCC Bike Details: This bike was owned by George Symonds and was raced in the first 1923 Amateur TT. It also won the 1923 Cornish Hill Climb. Other owners were Vincent Eddy, William Prowse, Brian Treval, Bill Lake followed by Paul Foulkes Halbard and now Karl Foulkes Halbard. First time at this show for this bike, which is still used on Sunbeam MCC rallies and is part of the Foulkes Halbrad collection at Filching Manor. 1925 Levis T3 211 Pre 1950 Lightweight Club: VMCC (Men of Kent) Bike Details: Levis were manufactured by Butterfields of Birmingham, for many years one of England's leading manufacturers of two-stroke motorcycles. 1925 Rex Acme TT / Brooklands 2¾ Pre 1950 Lightweight Club: Roaring Twenties MCC Bike Details: This type of machine was used by WL Handley to win the 1925 Junior TT at an average lap speed of 65.02 mph, and a lap record of 65.89 mph. Fitted with a Blackburne engine. 1926 BSA S26 500 Pre 1950 Club: Bike Details: First time at this show. 1926 Norton 18 500 Pre 1950 Club: Bike Details: I have owned this bike for about 4 years, it was originally owned by the same owner as the Model 19. A far as I know he used the two bikes at competition meetings. It has been restored. 1927 BSA Sloper 499 Pre 1950 Club: Dorking MCC Bike Details: Purchased by my late father in bits in a poor state approximately 40 years ago. He restored it and it was his favourite bike. When he passed away, my mother gave it to me and I've been riding it regularly pretty well ever since. First time at this show. 1927 Norton 18 490 Pre 1950 Club: Roaring Twenties MCC Bike Details: Recently restored, this 1927 model 18 has been on a long road to get to this condition. Found 16 years ago completely dismantled in many boxes. The previous owner never got to see it restored to this condition. Most of the work was completed by Flat Tank Engineering, thanks Bill... The South of England Classic Motorcycle Show : March------------------- 2020 TBA www.elk-promotions.co.uk Year Make Model cc / HP Classes Entered 1927 Sunbeam 9 493 Pre 1950 Club: VMCC (East Sussex) Bike Details: First time at this show. 1928 Ariel D - Pre 1950 Club: VMCC (East Sussex) Bike Details: Imported from Holland about 5 years ago, this motorcycle was sent to Gustaf Mandin of Norrköping, Sweden on production in 1928. On arrival in the UK it needed a lot of work to make it roadworthy, including making the brakes work! It is now a sound, working machine, bought for its looks as well as its speed. 1928 BSA H 557 Pre 1950 Club: Sunbeam MCC Bike Details: On the Sunbeam MCC club stand. 1928 Norton CS1 500 Pre 1950 Club: VMCC (East Sussex) Bike Details: Bought in 2017 from a friend who had owned it since 1982. This CS1 had been used by the previous owner for couple of years before being taken off the road as it needed a few jobs doing. Other events took over and it was never finished. He has decided now that it is too far down the list so it will never get done. Carefully reassembled using original parts to keep the patina after 30 years in bits. 1929 Ariel E (Black Ariel) 500 Pre 1950 Club: VMCC (East Sussex) Bike Details: Built up from a basket case about five years ago. The '80' stamped on the crankcase means it lef tthe factory with a guarenteed top-speed of 80mph. First time at this show for this Black Ariel. 1929 BSA S29 499 Pre 1950 Club: Sunbeam MCC Bike Details: On the Sunbeam MCC club stand. 1929 Matchless V2 500 Pre 1950 Club: AJS & Matchless OC (Sussex) Bike Details: OHV sporting machine, originally marketed by Matchless with a guaranteed speed of 85 mph. 1930 Indian 101 Scout 750 Pre 1950 Overseas Club: Indian Riders MCC Bike Details: Restored mainly in Sweden, using many original parts. This bike was exported to Sweden from new so has the European specification Bosch headlight, charging & electrical system, which were fitted on import. The American & UK machines were fitted with standard Indian equipment. Fitted with hand gear change, foot clutch and a left-hand throttle, which is standard for Indian. The Scout was popular for its handling, speed/weight ratio & versatility, and considered the flagship of Indian motocycles. 1932 Norton International 30 500 Pre 1950 Competition / Special Club: Norton OC (Surrey) Bike Details: Reassembled from a basket case by the late Bernard Harding. It's brilliant fun to ride, like riding a moving thunderstorm, springing oil instead of water! First time at this show. 1932 Rudge Special 500 Pre 1950 Club: VMCC (East Sussex) Bike Details: First time at this show for this sporting machine. 1935 Velocette GTP 250 Pre 1950 Lightweight Club: Bike Details: Only 250 magneto versions of the GTP were produced. The automatic two-stroke oiling by pump was a first. Formerly owned by Bob Burgess, Velocette's service manager and author. Quite a rare machine now, and first time at this show. The South of England Classic Motorcycle Show : March------------------- 2020 TBA www.elk-promotions.co.uk Year Make Model cc / HP Classes Entered 1936 Norton Manx 500 Pre 1950 Competition / Special Club: Norton OC (Surrey) Bike Details: An ex-works racer in unrestored condition. 1936c Exelsior Manxman Racing Sp 250 Pre 1950 Lightweight Competition / Special Club: Bike Details: Manxman Special c1936 built around one of the first short-stroke 250cc engines and an earlier "Mechanical Marvel" frame similar to that used by Excelsior when they won the 1933 Lightweight TT. First time at this Show. 1937 Matchless G8 500 Pre 1950 Club: AJS & Matchless OC(East London & Essex) Bike Details: Purchased in 2001, rebuilt and ready for the Isle of Man in 2002 . 1937 Rudge Ulster 500 Pre 1950 Club: VMCC (East Sussex) Bike Details: Total rebuild of my father's bike (Charlie Stanford), which broke down and was left against the garden wall. After some years, Mrs Stanford skipped it, and on coming home from work Dad had to hot-foot it to find it! Luckily he retrieved it, and again left it propped up against the garden wall as the sub-frame had been damaged whilst in transit in the skip.

    South of England Classic Motorcycle Show: Sunday 23rd October 2016 Page 1 of 25 South of England Classic Motorcycle Show: Draft Programme: Sunday 23rd October 2016 ________________________________________________________________________________________Year Make Model Club cc 1913 Zenith Gradua 90 Bore 996 Classes Entered:Pre 1950 VMCC (Surrey & Sussex) Bike Details: Built at Weybridge, Surrey, to the special order of Hal Hill, it lived on Monument Hill, Weybridge until 1953 when it was obtained by the present owner. Used by Hal Hill at Brooklands and many long-distance rallies before & after the First World War and last used by him in 1925. Fitted with the Gradua Gear, designed by Freddie Barnes in 1908 and fitted by Zenith until 1925. Zenith were barred from competing in the same classes as machines without variable gears, hence from 1910 the Zenith Trade Mark included the word BARRED. Capable of about 70 mph on the track, it's fitted with the JAP sidevalve engine, with 90mm bore x 77.5 stroke. It also has the large belt pulleys giving a variation from 3 to 1 in top gear, down to 6 to 1 in low gear.     5. Men of Substance – 1 When we are young and in the prime of our youth our lives pass so fast that events come and go quickly like today’s daily News. No sooner one event passes, another leaps up to replace it. Only the more dramatic or the humorous for the most part will stick with us. I recently discovered and read an old magazine article written in March 1992 to commemorate the anniversary of the tragic loss of Mike Hailwood. It triggered in me an old memory that I thought I had completely forgotten with the passage of time. Back around 1964/5 I was a member of a UK motorcycle club called The Southend & District MCC. Although I never met them, Bill Ivy and Dave Bickers were also registered members of the same club in compliance with an official UK ACU racing license ruling at that time. The ACU (Auto Cycle Union) was similar to the US. AMA (American Motorcycle Association) in governing all forms of motorcycle sport. We were treated to many a fascinating Club Talk by some quite prominent people of the day such as Charles Mortimer Sr. and Wal Phillips, (a veteran cinder-track speedway rider who was one of the first to develop aftermarket fuel injectors for motorcycles in the UK.), to name but a couple. An Avon Tire representative once came and gave a full presentation on the then newly developing technology of 'Avon Cling' High Hysteresis Tire Compounds. Bert Greeves, founder and owner of Greeves Motorcycles, was also a highly prominent figure along with his long-time friend and business associate, Derry Preston-Cobb, who ran the Greeves subsidiary of Invacar, an independent invalid vehicle factory located next door to the main Greeves factory on One Tree Hill, in Thundersley, Essex.

The Bonnie undergoes numerous and significant upgrades to its engine, gearbox, transmission and frame (after toying with a duplex design, Triumph instead made a larger diameter downtube to combat wobble and weave). A special TT model (T120C/TT) is produced until 1967 for the USA, due to the encouragement of Bill Johnson, of Johnson Motors ("Jo-Mo"). This is a stripped-down racing model, only made until 1966 for the US market. Two US dealers on a camping trip come up with the idea for the T20M Mountain Cub, combining Tiger Cub, Sports Cub and trials Cub parts. First sold in USA in 1964, proves very successful. BSA closes the Ariel factory at Selly Oak. The last Ariels in production, the Leader and Arrow, are manufactured at BSA's factory in Small Heath until 1965. Norton Atlas released. AMC acquires James.
