The analysis focuses on both the five-year period from 2013 to 2018 and the two-year period from 2016 to 2018, using several population datasets from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). These profiles are defined according to factors that contribute to demographic development – natural change, the difference between births and deaths and net migration due to internal migration1 (within Australia) and overseas migration. This framework yields nine distinct demographic profiles that allows analysis of change in any local area resulting from the recent acceleration in state level population growth. The analysis reveals areas of concentrated growth or decline, the drivers of change and how they differ between and across spatial and administrative boundaries. These profiles provide significant insights into demographic change being experienced in each LGA. They can be used to develop appropriate policy responses for the needs of an area. 1 Internal migration is migration within a country. Many of the convicts they guarded had also been soldiers, but were reduced to committing crime once the wars they were fighting ended and they were out of a job. Shimeld University of Tasmania, Hobart, Tasmania Introduction Vegetation forms the major living characteristic of a landscape that solicits inquiry into the history of its changes during the late Quaternary and the major factors that have influenced the changes. Early studies considered ecological factors would cause vegetation to develop until a stable climatic climax formation was attained (Clements 1936). The concept of an area developing a potential natural vegetation in the absence of humans was similar (Tüxen 1956). Both ideas held that the vegetation of an area would develop to a stable condition that would change little. However, the vegetation of a region never remains in stasis, but develops dynamically through time, influenced by changing dominant factors (Chiarucci et al. 2010). The structure of a major vegetation formation is usually dominated by a limited number of taxa of similar physiognomy. Although many taxa are identified at most sites studied for pollen in Tasmania, the major percentages in the records are represented by fewer than 10 pollen taxa. These are widely dispersed taxa, local taxa usually being under-represented in the records (Macphail 1975). The structures of fossil pollen-vegetation formations are interpreted with regard to modern vegetation even though abiotic and biotic conditions rarely remain the same through time, and identical replication is not expected. During the late Quaternary in Tasmania, the most important abiotic changes affecting vegetation were temperature and precipitation, and the most important biotic change was the impact of Aboriginals using their major cultural tool, fire.

    3 Tasmanian Midlands and Central Plateau 3.1 Tasmania has been isolated from the Australian mainland for at least 10 000 years. It is characterised by geographic and environmental variation, and high ecological and species biodiversity.1 The state is home to the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, an area recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in part for its unusually high proportion of endemic species.2 Tasmania also contains one of Australia’s few alpine regions, and one of 15 nationally-recognised biodiversity hotspots.3 3.2 Average temperatures have been rising in Tasmania since the 1950s, but not as rapidly as the Australian or global averages.4 And while no significant change to total annual rainfall is projected in Tasmania under climate change scenarios, extensive changes are expected to regional and seasonal distributions of rainfall. This is likely to have significant implications for Tasmania’s biodiversity. 3.3 The Committee visited several sites around Tasmania on 30 January 2012. Site inspections focussed on climate change impacts on terrestrial biodiversity, while evidence gathered at a public hearing the following day centred on marine ecosystems. No doubt, many such men, attracted to the wild, lonely plateau came hunting for the more elusive creatures, thought to be living there. Penetration from the South-East John Beamont the Naval Officer and Robert Jones a settler on the Jordan, made an expedition to the Great Lake in 1817 at the instance of the new govenor, Sorell, anxious to find new areas of pasture land beyond the settled districts. Beamont first set out from Cross Marsh (Melton Mowbray) and going through Black Brush, climbed the hills to the Clyde. Following the Blackburn Rivulet, they came to the Lagoon of Islands where they found cider gums, some of them destroyed by the natives endeavouring to extract the sweet liquid (if kept for a time the juice ferments in a most satisfactory manner). On the fourth day, Beamont forded the Shannon and proceeded seven miles, but on the following day they could not break camp, as snow and hail driving in from the south prevented them. On the sixth day they reached Swan Bay on the Great Lake, crossing the Ouse on the way.
