Lecture on Fabergé – by Tim Adams Docent Guild General Meeting, May 23, 2012 (Notes taken by Carol Hallenbeck) When we think of Fabergé, we think of the Imperial Easter eggs – of the delightfully jeweled, enameled works and of gold work techniques. In a San “Diego exhibition there were 27 Easter eggs – They had eggs from every known collection. But Fabergé was so much more. He was a designer and a goldsmith. He owned a business. He had engineers, enamellers, gem setters, goldsmiths as employees – 2700 at one time. He was the visionary. He supervised everything Nothing left his workshop without his approval. He had shops in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Odessa, Kiev, London. They were Edwardian jewelry stores. The store in St. Petersburg had the shop on the first floor, workshops and design center on the second and third floor. He and his family lived on the top, or fourth, floor. He told the story of Maria Pavlovna and her Fabergé collection, part of which was purchased by the McFerrins and is on display in our exhibit. The Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna was a good customer of Fabergé. On December 30, 2009, Sotheby’s in London auctioned some of her important pieces. They came from a newly discovered cache of Fabergé objects that she owned. She was the wife of Grand Duke Vladimir, the brother of Tsar Alexander III. The McFerrins purchased some of the most impressive pieces. They represent the highest quality of craftsmanship from the House of Fabergé. Pavlovna’s story represents intrigue and danger during the darkest hour of Russian history.

Maria Feodorovna's sister-in-law, Queen Olga of Greece, offered her villa of Mon Repos, on the island of Corfu, in the hope that it might improve the Emperor's condition. By the time that they reached Crimea, Alexander was too weak to travel any further, so they stayed at the Small Palace in Livadia. Recognizing that the Emperor's days were numbered, various Imperial relatives began to descend on Livadia and also the famed clergyman John of Kronstadt, who administered Communion to the Emperor. On 21 October, Alexander received Nicholas's fiancée, Princess Alix, who had come from her native Darmstadt to receive the Emperor's blessing. Despite being exceedingly weak, Alexander insisted on receiving Alix in full dress uniform, an event that left him exhausted. Soon after, his health began to deteriorate more rapidly. After a sleepless night on November 1st the Emperor knew that his time was almost up. At 10 in the morning all the family gathered around the Emperor seated in his favourite armchair, who spoke a few kind words, kissed all who were present; not forgetting to congratulate Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna's on the occasion of her thirtieth birthday. At 11 morning, the situation was described as: "(The) activity of the heart continues to diminish. Shortness of breath is increasing. Fully conscious." In the presence of Father John of Kronstadt, Alexander took communion at 11.30.

John Williams MBE, Executive Chef at The Ritz London, has created an edible Eggs Fabergé dish, inspired by jeweller Peter Carl Fabergé’s iconic Mosaic Egg of 1914. The Mosaic Egg was one of the most technically sophisticated and extraordinary of all the Fabergé Imperial Easter Eggs, and took over a year to craft. The Egg was the work of Fabergé’s first female designer, Alma Theresia Pihl, who was inspired by a petit point carpet she was embroidering as part of her marriage trousseau. It was one of a series of 50 eggs made and delivered to the Russian Imperial Royal family, all unique and individual in their design. Today, the Mosaic Egg is part of the British Royal Collection. Fabergé’s modern-day creations take inspiration from original pieces. The Treillage egg pendant was inspired by the Diamond Trellis Egg and the Mosaic egg pendant is born from the Imperial Mosaic egg. In keeping with Fabergé’s history for surprise and ingenuity, John Williams has created a luxurious Eggs Fabergé dish which closely mirrors the multi-coloured Fabergé Treillage egg pendant. Using the inside of an egg shell as a mould, the delicate dish is created using the very highest level of technical expertise.

The 100th anniversary of the martyr's death of Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich In the night of June 13, 1918, in Perm, Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich, the younger brother of Emperor Nicholas II, and his personal secretary Nikolai Zhonson were secretly killed by Chekists. This event was the first of brutal murders of representatives of the Imperial House and their approximate ones, which followed in Yekaterinburg, Alapaevsk, and Petrograd. The remains of Michael Alexandrovich and his secretary are still not found. In Perm, the search continues for them. Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich, was the fourth son of Emperor Alexander III, Russian commander, Lieutenant-General (1916), General- Adutant, and a member of the State Council (1901-1917). In 2018, in accordance with the order of the Governor of Perm Krai, No. 257 of November 13, 2017, a program of events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the murder on the night of 13 June 1918 in the vicinity of the city of Perm of Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich, was launched. Memorial events dedicated to the tragic events of a hundred years ago was held in Perm from 11 to 13 June and the main organisors were the Perm State Archives of Social and Political History, and Elizabeth-Sergei Enlightenment Society (ESES). The last known photo of Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich, Perm 1918. It exhibits jewellery from the period 1860 - 1917, mainly Russian, telling about the close ties between the Danish and Russian monarchy. Her majesty and her sisters are also descendants of the Romanov dynasty, as their grandmother Queen Alexandrine nee Princess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin was a daughter of Grand Duchess Anastasia Mikhaelovna, a daughter of Grand Duke Michael Nicholaevich, son of Emperor Nicholas I. Museum Director Thomas Thulstrup presented the exhibition, and then the Queen spoke about her relationship with the many beautiful objects brought home to Denmark by Empress Maria Feodorovna, in Denmark known as Empress Dagmar, and said many thanks to several family members who had agreed to lend their objects. The young musicians from the Copenhagen municipal music school created the right Russian atmosphere with compositions of both Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev. Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II and Princess Benedikte were escorted by Museum Director Thomas Thulstrup to the Fabergé Chamber and could in peace and quiet, enjoy the many treasures and the family memories associated with them.

Imperial Easter Egg by Faberge The Mosaic Egg, 1914 The Royal Collection - Technically one of the most sophisticated and extraordinary of Fabergé’s Imperial Easter Eggs, the Mosaic Egg retains its ‘surprise’. It takes the form of a medallion painted on ivory with the portraits of the five children of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra on one side and a basket of flowers and their names on the other, on a stand surmounted by the Russian imperial crown, held within the egg by gold clips. The egg was the Tsar’s Easter gift to his wife in 1914, but the original invoice was destroyed and the cost is therefore unknown. The Tsarina’s monogram and the date 1914 are set beneath a moonstone at the apex of the egg. It comprises a platinum mesh into which tiny diamonds, rubies, topaz, sapphires, demantoid garnets, pearls and emeralds are fitted – perfectly cut, polished and calibrated to fill the spaces. This extraordinary technical feat is all the more impressive because the platinum is not welded but cut. The five oval panels around the centre of the egg feature a stylised floral motif, replicating the technique of petit-point. In the list of confiscated treasures transferred from the Anichkov Palace to the Sovnarkom in 1922, the egg is described thus: ‘1 gold egg as though embroidered on canvas’. The designer, Alma Theresia Pihl, was inspired to produce the needlework motif when watching her mother-in-law working at her embroidery by the fire.
