Resumo Esta monografia, escrita para a disciplina Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso do curso de Letras Tradução Inglês da Universidade de Brasília, se destina a traduzir e comentar um capítulo do livro Gypsies: The Hidden Americans, de Anne Sutherland, professora de antropologia da Universidade de Califórnia em Riverside. O livro pertence ao gênero etnográfico, e descreve a cultura de uma comunidade de ciganos1 da etnia Rom que moram em Barvale, Califórnia. A tradução foi feita com permissão da autora. O texto do capítulo foi digitalizado em um documento PDF, e depois foi convertido em Word através do programa de reconhecimento de caracteres ópticos ABBY, para ser traduzido com o programa de tradução Wordfast Pro 3. Enquanto a tradução era realizada, foram escritas várias anotações sobre dificuldades, reflexões baseadas em teorias sobre a presença do tradutor e sua voz no texto, sobre as teorias da tradução etnográfica e do uso de notas de rodapé, além de considerações sobre as diferenças entre a cultura dos ciganos descritos no livro e de outras etnias. Quando o processo de tradução foi concluído, foi criado um novo documento Word, no qual foi desenhada uma tabela para que o original e a tradução fossem comparados, e as anotações foram convertidas em notas de rodapé que comentam essa tradução comparada. Uma vez que tudo o que era relacionado à tradução estava concluído, ela foi incluída junto a discussões teóricas e etnográficas para formar a versão completa apresentada nesta monografia. Abstract This End-of-course-paper, written for the End-of-course subject of the English Translation Program of the University of Brasilia, aims to translate and comment one chapter of the book Gypsies: The Hidden Americans, by Anne Sutherland, professor of anthropology at the University of California at Riverside. The book belongs to the ethnographic genre, and describes the culture of a Rom Gypsy community that dwells in Barvale, California. The translation was done with the permission of the author. The chapter‘s text was digitalized in a PDF document, and later converted into Word through the program ABBY of optical character recognition, to be translated with the translation program Wordfast Pro 3. While the translation was being made, several notes were written about difficulties, comments based in theories about the presence of the translator and his voice in the text, about the ethnographic translation theories and the use of footnotes, and also about the differences between the culture of the Gypsies described in the book and other Gypsy groups. When the translation process was completed, was designed a table in which the original text and the translation could be compared, and the notes made during the translation were added as footnotes that commented this compared translation. Once all that concerned to the translation was finished, it was united with theoretical and ethnographic discussions to make the complete version presented in this End-of-course-paper. Likewise the character of Sabina in the film Gadjo Dilo. shows complete nudity only as prelude to a catastrophe: the Romanians set fire to Roma houses after Sabina is seen washing her hair, her breasts naked and skirts covering her lower body. It is worth mentioning that the main characters in all these various representations are males, as are the authors. In a sexually repressed society from nineteenth century Europe, fantastic anecdotes of women at the margins of society, endowed with un unmatched sensuality and sexuality were continuously arousing all kinds of dangerous fantasies of temptation and breaking rules, only natural reactions to strict rules of interdiction. „Just as in large numbers of images depicting colonial situations (postcards or press pictures), in the media that I am discussing here the women of the ŘOtherř are fantasised and displayed as aesthetically attractive and hence sexually desirable. A Lover’s Complaint The exploration of Africa by Europeans in the sixteenth century increased the information about Africa and Africans but required the creation of a lexicon, a narrative, and an epistemology to process and disseminate those experiences as usable knowledge. One of the constants in these “descriptions” of Africa is the marvel at its plenty: food, heat, sun, nakedness. Richard Eden in Decades of the New World (1555) comments that some English mariners died in Africa because of their lack of self control in the face of the foison available to them: “our men partly having no rule of themselves, but eating without measure of the fruits of the country, and drinking the wine of the Palme trees that drop in the night from the cut of the branches.” These new encounters produced new appetites in the English and questions about the differences between themselves and Africans. How does appetite, desire, distinguish the one from the other? Why does Othello need to reject pleasing the palate of [his] “appetite” as Iago and Cassio yield to theirs? Understanding human nature through the control of appetite goes back as far as Aristotle. The Age of exploration mapped onto the paradigms of Aristotle and Aquinas a way of imagining differences the supposed race to be real. Not quite 20 years after Othello Burton in The Anatomy of Melancholy reaffirms the importance of Aristotle’s schema.

    READING THE UNCANNY X­MEN: GENDER, RACE, AND THE MUTANT METAPHOR IN A POPULAR NARRATIVE By Joseph James Darowski A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY American Studies 2011 ABSTRACT READING THE UNCANNY X­MEN: GENDER RACE AND THE MUTANT METAPHOR IN A POPULAR NARRATIVE By Joseph James Darowski The first superhero comic book was published in 1938 and since that time the genre has become a staple of American popular culture. While superhero stories have been adapted into every popular storytelling medium, the genre is most closely associated with the comic book industry. This dissertation examines the first 500 issues of The Uncanny X­Men, one of the most popular series to be published in America. In particular, the portrayals of race and gender will be analyzed by performing a close reading of the stories published as well as a numerical analysis of the ethnicity, nationality, and gender of the heroes, villains, and guest stars who appear in the series. The X‐Men comic book franchise has a reputation among fans, creators, and scholars as one of the most diverse and progressive superhero comic book titles. The core conceit of the series, that there are people called mutants who are born with powers and abilities that separate them from normal humans, has allowed the themes of societal prejudice and hatred to be explored in a metaphorical fashion, though looking closely at the race and gender of the characters in the series reveals a different reality than the common perception of the series.

    ABSTRACT Title: THE GYPSY AS TROPE IN VICTORIAN AND MODERN BRITISH LITERATURE. Abigail Rothblatt Bardi, Ph.D. 2007 Directed by: Dr. William A. Cohen, Associate Professor University of Maryland College Park Since their arrival in the British isles in the early sixteenth century, the Romani people, known as Gypsies, were the objects of a complex mixture of both persecution and desire. Although early legislation reflects concerns about their alleged thievery and vagrancy, little factual historical information exists about them, and their identity is constructed in British discourse in large part by their functions in literature. In the nineteenth century, the stereotype of the wild, exotic Gypsy evolves into an established trope that can be readily deployed in texts as a challenge to normative forms of property ownership, gender, sexuality, and national identity. This dissertation takes as its central focus a twentieth-century text, Virginia Woolf’s Orlando (1928), in which an aristocratic man lives for 400 years, turning into a woman midway through, and absconding with a band of Gypsies. Here, gender is famously interrogated, but the novel also calls attention to the fundamental instability of norms regarding property distribution, erotic desire, and British national identity. Through the lens of Orlando, the dissertation examines a variety of nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century texts in which Gypsies or Gypsy figures (characters with Gypsy-like qualities) appear and disturb the social order. Chapter One shows how, in works by Emily Brontë, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Kenneth Grahame, Gypsy figures, sometimes in small or cameo roles, imperil the distribution of property through primogeniture.

In the 2010 Census, 2.9 percent of respondents indicated that they were two or more races, with even more assigning themselves other designations that speak to the many types of multiracial identities common today. As this population grows in real life, it also flourishes in young adult literature, where ever more protagonists identify with more than one racial or ethnic group and must decide how to assert themselves and what to call themselves. This paper explores some of these novels and tracks each character’s progress towards creating a “badge” of identity. ‘ Introduction Every year when I was a student, my school district held awards ceremonies to honor distinguished students of color from all grade levels. Introduction MUCH HAS BEEN SAID ABOUT Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897), the out-of-tradition exemplar of the Gothic which, perhaps, has had a more pervasive effect on our understanding of life and death, gender roles and identity, and sex and perversity than any other work of the genre. The vampire from the so-called dark ages has become a symbol standing for the uncontrollable powers acting on us and also for all the discarded, uncanny phenomena in human nature and history. The work, however, has usually been taken by the critics of Gothic literature as “a paradigmatic Gothic text” (Brewster 488) representing the social, psychological, and sexual traumas of the late-nineteenth century. Hence, it has been analysed as a work “breaking [the] taboos, [and in need of being] read as an expression of specifically late Victorian concerns” (Punter and Byron 231). The text has also been seen as “reinforc[ing] readers’ suspicions that the authorities (including people, institutions and disciplines) they trust are ineffectual” (Senf 76). Yet, it has hardly ever been taken as offering an alternative Weltanschauung1 in place of the decaying Victorian ethos. True, Dracula is a fin-de-siècle novel and deals with the turbulent paradigmatic shift from the Victorian to the modern, and Stoker, by creating the lecherous vampire and his band as the doppelgängers of the sexually sterile and morally pretentious bourgeois types (who are, in fact, inclined to lascivious joys), reveals the moral hypocrisy and sexual duplicity of his time.
